Title: Bruce's trapping
Post by: Humptulips on January 21, 2016, 09:19:25 PM
Well, everyone else is posting pictures of cats so I thought I would put one up I caught today.
I had a few sets out in December but came down sick the day after I started so the few traps I had set kind of got the drive by checks even when they needed some fixing. Finally pulled them and have not trapped since because of other commitments.
Monday though I went out and set some traps and today one of them payed off with a very soggy tomcat. I was a little soggy too. What a rainy day! Just cat sets out except for on otter set.

Bruce is your Cat population seem to be better, I know last year you thought it might be on the decline.

Lots of cat sign over here this year, probably the most I've ever seen.

I think cat population is way down. The mountain beavers are gone so what do they eat. Never see a rabbit. I used to catch multiple cats at a set. Now I pull the set after one catch.

Do you pull your cat set after one catch regardless of its sex?

If I catch a female or kitten I let them go and leave the set but if I take a tom I pull.

Now we're talkin! Very impressive, Bruce. All bulls I'm sure!
Fellas, Bruce is tired of hearin me say this, but I'll mention it for the last time. To my way of thinkin, you guys should be targeting civits and avoiding those coast cats as non-targets. Unless you need a cat to make civit bait with.
Bruce is leading the way yet again: High Rollin Civit trappin!

Bruce have you ever tried those pipe traps for mink like a pocket set?  I've heard they can't resist a dark hole
Title: Re: Bruce's trapping
Post by: Humptulips on January 27, 2016, 11:35:17 PM
I have with no luck. I think the trap is a little too short for mink. Seems like it would be simple to extend the pipe a little but it is the working parts that are too short and with the trigger I have in them I ran into problems trying to lengthen it out.
I'm sure a pipe trap would work good for mink but they make them that are not airtight like mine. These would probably be the way to go.

Two cats today :lol4: Boy was it wet and they show it. Don't call it the rain forest for nothing I guess.
Also had a trap come up missing but I got it back.
Brush cutting crew decided to help them selves but they were still in the area so I ran them down and got it back.
I kind of chewed on them a bit over it. Of course they said it looked like it had been abandoned for years. Where have I heard that before? :bash:

Thanks for putting those pictures up for me. I haven't been able to post pics for a few years. Amanda from Harts Lake did a fantastic job making the vest and the civets came from Bruce's trapline (it's not a total thread jack). Civet hide is a lot thinner than beaver so it is lighter and more comfortable to wear in out climate. The back of the vest is made of sheared goat skin.

What a miserable day yesterday. Sicker then a dog but still had to check those traps. Sprung them so I could stay home today.
Eventful none the less though. Caught this small female.

Caught this cat yesterday and kind of makes me think I might have turned her loose before. Turned one loose about three miles away of similar size. That one really acted normal and did not like me. This one acted as calm as can be, almost like I'm ready to go now. Where have you been? It's about time. Put down my camera but I should have got a shot of her just walking off slowly and nonchalantly.

Been taking a break from trapping for a while. Tuesday Winslow drove down and we went out and set a few traps in a spot I have caught a ton of otter in over the years. Right at the mouth of Ziegler Cr on Lake Quinault. Winslow took a nice picture of the lake. Maybe he will see this and post it.
Anyway I caught this otter there Thursday. Good sized male. I'm going to save it to skin at the Winter Rendezvous.

Here's a shot of the set. Doesn't look like much. The otter come out here. They have a trail from the lake to the creek and a toilet area just above this set. You can kind of see their spot where they enter the water. The trap is a swimthrough (out of sight in the water) but it is a one way set as the water drops off and the one end is down to deep.

I figured as much I was surprised with the beaver it weighed right at 58 lbs and it bent the cage up like a banana and took awhile to get it out of the trap which is a 10x12x42 swim through
