My friend began deer hunting when he was a spry 14 year old. Every year, dedicated to the hunt, he would spend days and days stalking deer in search of a shooter buck. And every year he would end up with tag soup at the end of the season. At age 18 he enlisted in the USMC and had a 4 year break from hunting in order to do his duty. Finally in 2012 he came back home to start his quest for a buck. for 3 more years this Marine again busted his tail in search of glory but yet like so many times before, he would not get the opportunity to shoot at a buck. Now, let's talk about his 2015 season...this is his story.
Opening day 2015 finally rolled around and my buddy had taken the entire week off to hunt. The area he hunts is a combination of dense evergreens with patches of sagebrush in between. Tirelessly he would climb up the hills then down to the creek bottom and all he would see was does and non shooters. Slowly everyone in his party began to tag out, feeling deflated and with the pressure mounting because of the season end quickly approaching he set out once again. About an hour before sundown he finally spotted a shooter deep in the woods. He jumped off of the quad and loaded his rifle. The deer bolted into some nasty woods but turned around and headed back down into a steep, thick wooded canyon. As the deer was making it's move into the canyon he shot right before the deer made it into the canyon. Unsure if he had hit the buck my friend quickly took off into the direction he had last seen the buck. As he came up to the last spot he saw the buck laying not 5 feet from where he was last seen.
This is his first deer ever. His hardwork and dedication paid off and it paid off incredibly well.

Too Far East IMHO to be a bench leg. :twocents:
-
I've seen bench legs on the ytc. Which is at least 25 miles further east
-
Nice buck! congrats....hard work does pay off

Awesome buck! Congrats!

Being that far east how do you know if its a benchhleg buck?
-
Big, big antlers and a blackie's tail. :dunno:
-
I saw a doe about a month ago that had the classic "blacktail" I tired to take a photo but it didn't come out as clearly as I'd hoped

Whatever, its a mule nothing more. As far as I know there's whitetail, black tail and mule deer.
-
Actually... It's a benchleg
-
Congrats to your friend, great first buck. Maybe its a young muledeer with great genetics. :dunno:

From the pictures provided, it looks like a mule deer. Care to elaborate on your scientific research on its bench leg status?
-
I've hunted this unit on and off for years. I've taken deer in the higher elevations that look like mule deer with the benchleg tail, I've also taken bucks that are more benchleg looking than the one in the picture. So there for I believe that the one pictures has primarily mule deer genetics, but has to have some blacktail in him. :twocents:

That's a great deer ..The whole benchleg thing means nothing to me .. haha Whoever thought of such non-sense ...Deer is a deer -- Whitetail-mule deer -blacktail and now Benchleg ( half breed ) haha
-
This is a 368 buck to. There are a few nice animals in that unit. I felt it was a benchleg buck to. Your friends buck is a awesome first deer.
-
Dude that's tank for cowiche!!
-
That's a beast!
-
Holy smokes that is a masher for that unit, wow!
-
Definently some good genes in that area!
-
368 buck
-
Those are some nice bucks!! For all the benchleg doubters out there, you wont understand unless you get one. :chuckle:
-
Here's another

This is not to sound like I am hiding a secret spot but I would seriously think twice about hunting there for deer. The deer densities are very low and most bucks aren't very big. The bucks you are seeing are by far exceptions to the norm.
-
Very nice buck, Congrats on your first!!
-
Nice bucks guys! They are few and far but there are some decent deer. This was a buddies 2014 in 368.
Great buck! Especially for that unit.
