Title: 100 dollars for gear
Post by: bulldogs40 on January 29, 2016, 05:55:47 AM
Im sitting here kinda bored so I got to thinking about hunting like I always seem to do when I'm bored. The question is if you had 100 dollars to spend on a piece of gear right now what would it be. Maybe not something essential but something that would just make your life in the mountains a little easier or more comfortable. So 100 dollars laying around what would you spend it on.

Carbon fiber zpole walking sticks.  Also the crampons that just pull over your boot.   I recently went chukar hunting and both of these items worked awesome in the steep snowy terrain I was on.   Wore the crampons over my Salomon 4d hikers all day.

Might not qualify as "gear", but I'd spend it on better food. After eating some Heather's Choice I'll never go back to Mt. House. The up front price seems ridiculous, but the moral (and energy) boost you get from a quality meal is one of the more understated elements to backcountry hunting. Worth it in the long run in my opinion.

Heathers choice has got me thinking of making more of my own food for the back country but that price tag up front is  :yike:

$100 on gear would be a bino harness(why not go American made fhf or agc), boot insoles (superfeet green or merino), game bags (Tag or caribou gear) or onx maps(app or chip).

I like the onx map idea also the carbon fiber hiking poles. Its dangerous when I get too much time on my hands(100 dollars could easily turn into 200 pretty quickly)

$100 on gear?  I'd say Caribou Bags, Couple Havalon Knives, maybe a hammock.

Ugh. The worst!!!  :chuckle:

I understand everyone has different tastes, or lack thereof.  :chuckle:  For me Mt. House digests at the same pace as MRE's, and doesn't taste much better. I get enough MRE's at work, I will do anything for a real meal on my own time.

I think I have the <$100 gear list pretty well covered. It's the over $100 stuff I want that I don't have.

Good trekking poles are a must have if you plan on packing an animal out on your back.
Good headlamp. I really like my Zebra light. Can't be without a good light just in case.
Darn Tough socks are amazing.
I'd probably spoil myself with a nice knife if it were me.

My buddy literally wears them till they have holes in them, then sends them back and they send him new ones.

I wear these almost every day:

They are a little lighter and shorter than the boot sock.  Can't go wrong with either, though.

No, seriously, last time I did this (last year), I bought 7 pairs of Smartwool socks on a good Sierra Trading Post sale.  I'll try the Darntough socks next time.

That is a fantastic way to spend $100. Another idea is an Alaskan Guide Creations bino harness. One of my favorite hunting purchases for around $100.

Total convert! I will say I'm still a huge fan of the First Lite ones, but they fall apart when you look at them. Bought a pair of Exos last year to wear side by side comparison throughout the season...

By the end of backpacking season Exos were the ones I reached for first!

I think KUIU still makes the best Gator out there.

I've watched Scott run through about every one ever made 😆.

His only complaint is his legs get hot.

But not everyone runs that ginger internal body temp...

I bought three Exo shorts when Cabela's had them on sale.  Figured they were worth a try and I expected they would be "Hunting Only" shorts at that still outrageous price.  I mean shouldn't there be a half dozen in a bag for that price?  Anyway, after the first hunt I came home and tossed all my other shorts in the trash!  I have more money in Exo shorts now than the wife has in shoes :yike:

Now I understand why women get so excited when they find just the right bra...it just makes life more enjoyable! :chuckle:

Hard to argue with the EXO's, great underwear. Make life in the mountains much easier.

A quality bino harness, is so worth the money. AGC or FHF are my first choices. I prefer FHF because of the smaller profile, but believe AGC may have a smaller version now. No more constant fiddling with fit, and stretch and riding up under my pack.

   Havalon

Gaiters- Kinda like underwear, cant have enough. I have a variety for different hunts. Noise not an issue, kuiu, OR, or Sitka stormfront. If noise conscious I like kennys.

Supplements- This was my first year playing with supplements. I noticed a significant difference in my long term performance over the course of the 3+ weeks chasing elk.

Gaiters #1, I have had 1 trip ruined after hiking in 5 miles because I did not bring a set. Water from brush ran into my boots and before I new it I was dumping water out of both boots and had to turn around and hike out. If I could find a decent set with what money was left trekking poles #2.

I'd buy a handful of SeatoSummit eVent dri sac's..  One for my clothes, sleeping bag,food/stove/fuel(D-ring to hang in tree away from bears) and the smallest one they make for my fire starter/firstaid kit.   All my stuff stays waterproof/organized and the one I use for my clothes doubles as one hell of a pillow...  Best/favorite pieces of gear I own.  Keeps blood from boned out meat off all my stuff too.  Money..

Thanks for the trekking pole suggestions, I ended up snagging a pair of Lexi quantum speed locks that another member posted about from Sierra trading post. I'm stoked to put them to the test. I also got a jetboil at rei during the member sale and used my dividends on it so I can cross those 2 items off my list. Haha

More points out of state or special permits.

1/3 of a Bearpaw map.

A near lifetime of day passes to the Spa Hot Springs Motel pool.
