I have narrowed it to 2 scopes. I don't know much about scopes but I wanted something 14-16 power up to 400. Here are the two I was looking at but am open to other options.

I'm doing the same. And also a7mm mag. Talk to elknut. Gives awesome advice and he sells vortex.
Im lookin at the pst and the hs_t. Considering another leupold.
-
I put a Leupold VX3 3.5-10x40 CDS on my Tikka T3 7 mag. My son put the same scope but 4-14x40 on his. I like them both a lot. Either 1 will be enough scope for most people. I'm most likely going to keep mine as a 1/4 moa instead of CDS. But not positive. Have a little more work to do to get to where I want to be with it. Ive had a lot guys with experience tell me the 3.5-10 will be plenty for anything out to a 1000 yards. I most likely wont be shooting that far. But you never know.

I am still in the load developement stage for a Savage 116 7mm I put together just before last season and I topped it with a Leupold 6-18x40 cds. Those both look to be pretty good I don't know how you could go wrong with either  good luck!

If you're looking at Vortex and you're saying you have a $400 budget I'd look at a leupold vx2 or a vortex diamondback hp. Bmcox86 on here has a nice Viper for sale cheap too. Much better glass than what you're looking at now.
-
I just put a leupold vx-3, 4.5x14x50 on my new 270 sm. have not shot it yet. also put a limbsaver recoil pad on it. mike w

Have you really used 14-16 on game? For the range I like more power but hunting haven't needed it and even when I've had more have turned it down. Now hunt with a fixed 6x. Is plenty to pop the steel coyote at my range at 440

I've got a 4-16 on a rifle and have no problem with it. It's usually at 4x but the rest is there if I need it.

for under 400 you can get a leupold vx3 3.5-10 cds right now (389 delivered) or a non CDS model for 349 delivered from natchezss.com
i just picked one up.

How about the newest model Leupold, VX3i 2.5-8 for $333 shipped?

OK so after reading some more threads and a little research I am leaning towards leupold vx 3 since I have heard some mixed reviews about vortex. Maby I can find a cheap one since they just came out with the vx3i. I am still pretty lost when it comes to scopes. I am going to try and get out this weekend and look through a couple and see if I can find something I like.

:yeah: I just put a crossfire 2 just like the one you posted on my last AR build. While its not a bad scope (especially for the price) I wouldn't put one on a big game rifle. My biggest complaint with it, beyond 12 power its pretty hard to see through and the eye relief is a very narrow window. Under 12x the view is pretty darn clear. Plus the AO is a pain to mess with in the field.
I've have several different styles and sizes of Leupold scopes from riflemans to Mark4s and never have an issue with darkness or shadowing through the whole power range. They are clear at any setting even with the sun in your face.

DO NOT buy a Leopold or any other scope with a 36 mm. 40 mm or bigger. I'd go straight to the Vortex Diamondback. Also, a scope with an A/O is a PITA, unless you have a lot of time to adjust it to get it clear to see out of it.

I have a nikon monarch 3 12x42 with a bdc reticle mounted on my weatherby 7mm and it is legit.
-
I had a vortex diamondback on a .300 win mag and I broke/floated the reticle from the recoil I think. I sent it back to vortex and they fixed it. I'm pretty sure the recoil from that rifle broke the scope. Not sure though.

I have a Leupold on my 300WM and for 20 some years never had a problem until the base came loose :dunno:

I think its lacking in magnification myself.

Ive heard of issues with the Vortex not tracking consistently. Part of the reason I went with Leupy VX3. Well that and just me being a Leupold fan. And good reviews on the tracking on the VX3
-
I will stay with leupold as they are proven and vortex is not. mike w

Everything I own is leupold never had a problem I've had hits out to 1200 yards with my 4.5-14x50 on my 300 rum tracks very good

why not buy a leupold with a 36mm?

Leupold first. Nikon second. Vortex I'd pass to many issues they have a great warranty but the problem is is that your gonna need it

I've had a Remington 700 stainless synthetic since about the mid 90s. I put a Leupold VX3 in 3.5-10X50. It's more than enough for big game out to 500 yards (and further). It's a very solid scope, very clear and crisp.
I compared it to the scope my father had on his rifle, which is a VX-2 with a 40mm objective. The difference in low light conditions was very noticeable.
-
This should fall in your budget. I ordered one today, I use leupold but figured I would try a vortex out at this price

I have a VX3 6.5-20x40 AO with a load specific turret on my Switch Barrel Remington that I use for coyotes and Nephew and sisters have used for deer and I use it on 20x 99% of the time. Just killed a coyote at 78 yards on 20x. Why not? I followed them in the scope the entire way anyway.
I just purchased a Viper PST for my Sendero 7mm and its a bada$$ scope. Either way you can't go wrong. I'd seriously consider a Viper HST used. Check out The Long Range Hunting Forum classifieds.

The bigger the better for for light transmission and resolution.

I would only buy a leupold. mike w

I've got a Viper HS-T 4-16x44 and its awesome.
When I bought the scope throughout all the research I did, it seems like the advantage of a larger objective doesn't really outweigh the cost or actual weight.

I went from a 40mm to a 50mm and it made a significant difference.
I didn't look into any 44mm.
To me the $ increase was well worth it. Low light in the deep woods is common where I hunt. I had light issues in the past and didn't want to deal with it again.
