Dead coyote that looked to be of natural causes this year, kinda freaked me out as I saw it at the last minute and was waiting for it to jump up and run.

Saw the same elk twice in one month years ago with a broken antler. It was a spike that one antler has cut, half way up. It was still hanging when we went back for elk about 3 weeks later.

Haven't found any actual treasures of any sort yet.

I found a wallet washed up near our local boat ramp one morning while pulling our boat out. It was about 3 inches thick. Had around seventy bucks, about 15 credit cards, tons of membership cards, punch cards, a couple house keys, TONS of stuff piled up in this dudes wallet. It was some old farts with a Utah drivers license. I mailed it to him along with a little note. Never heard a word back.

I didn't really "find" them per se, my buddy did the year before and we went back to see them.  There are 2 memorial plaques on a bluff in unit 342 overlooking a large portion of unit 346 and Bald Mountain.  They have the names of 2 hunters who passed away over the last few years.  Kinda cool.  I wish I knew the stories behind them.  They are very ornate, some really nice woodwork.  They are planted in the ground very heavy duty like on 4X4 posts.  Someone went to a lot of trouble to get those out there.  There's an empty little bottle of wiskey at the base of each of them.  I'm sure they were members of one of the camps in the area that have been there forever.

Ive found nudie mags, gloves, one knife, 2 fishing poles, 1 tackle box, and twice I have ran into some shady people in the middle of no where. The first time I was about six miles in and this guy comes walking across the opening right up to me. He looked like he hadnt showerd in a month. Then he asks me what month and day it is. So I told him. Then he asks the direction of the closest town. So I point. Then he walks off. ( creepy )  The other guy was about 4 miles in at a different spot. Looked like he was trying to find his plants. :dunno:

Just remembered another one, and great thread by the way. Ran into a naked guy outside of Goldendale like two miles from the nearest road. He was just standing there, all his clothes piled next to him. This was on Halloween, and it wasn't warm. I think he was on meth. And I found a rifle on top of a Jeep, kinda. I was driving up by Windy point in the rifle deer season and this red jeep comes lumbering down the road at me. I stop, and calmly ask the guy what kind of gun he shoots. He looks at me, wonders what kind of person would ask a stupid question like that to a stranger without saying hello first. Then his face gets red, worried, and he looks in his back seat. A few cusswords later and I start laughing, and tell him his rifle is riding on top of his jeep. It was hilarious. I've also left my Benelli SBE II on my tire, ran over it and left it, only to realize it was gone when I got out at the next pheasant field. Luckily there was like 14" of fresh snow so it didn't hurt the gun at all and that nobody drove down there. How stupid can you be? Wow.

When your hand gets healed up enough so you can type easier, do you mind expanding on the story?..

Or maybe you could answer the following questions with 'Y' for yes, N for no.....

1.  Did you help the kid find the deer?
2.  Did he find the deer?
3.  Did you help him find his dad?

i have found a ton of different things through the years hunting in the woods but the strangest thing i came across when we were fishing a tourny up the reach and came across 3 does and one hell of a huge sheep. i mean this thing had a head the size of an excerise ball. the thing never looked like it had been sheared in it's life.
the funniest part is the does started up the hill in mule deer form and all stopped at the top of the ridge looking back down at the river and us.
then the sheep took off following suit..
we were laughing when it stopped and turned broadside and looked back too.
poor thing was confused for sure... :chuckle:

Last year I found two hand-made railroad spikes in a rotton stump, we are guessing them to be from the early 1900's, and I found a model-t piston on an old OVERGROWN logging road.  My dad found one of those HUGE handsaws they used back in the 1800's 30 years ago on the same road.  And this year we found a Knifes of Alaska Cub Bear caping knife on a game trail in the middle of a huge sage brush hill, well, acttually my dad found it, I was a little jealous, because I was looking at buying that knife when he found it.

I found an old rusted to crap leatherman in E Montana a number of years back way the heck in the middle of BFE.  It was completely rusted shut.  I sent it to the company down in Portland with a sob story and a couple weeks later, a brand new one showed up in the mail box.

Found a nice pair of Redfield Binos in the road right next our camp in E Montana also.  I was really digging these.  A couple days later a rig pulls up and an old guy comes up asking if we had found a pair of them.  Said he thinks he left them on top of the truck.  I replied "Was it a pair of black Redfield 10X50"s?".  All bright eyed he says "Yeah, Yeah".  I replied "Nope, never seen 'em".  I gave them back.

Nearly every hunting trip I always come across popped balloons. Found a tent, fishing poles, a few pairs of sunglasses, a couple of camo headnets, random unopened bottles of water, lots of old wrecked cars.

Something that still baffles my dad and I is last dove season we saw about 7 hispanics out in the middle of a huge patch of sage brush all carrying fishing poles (no tackle boxes or anything) and all wearing the same yellow outfits. There was no water around

wasn't hunting, but hiking years ago on kodiak island.

saw a bear skeleton so we walked up thinking it'd be cool to grab the skull and noticed a human skeleton under the bear skeleton with an old rusty blackpowder rifle in the pile.

in our genious teenage super idealistic sorta way we figured it's old, best to leave him and his gun alone. and walked away, I wish cellphones had cameras back in those days.

I still say if I ever go like that I'd hope people would do the same and leave me be (years after the fact, days or weeks is different ).

Remembered a few more of my dads: One time while he was goat hunting, he was glassing and saw something red under a cliff from two miles away, so he got a different few, and saw what appeared to be an arm, and a leg 15 ft. appart, so my uncle, who was hunting with him, hiked out and called the cops, they ropped down the cliff and found a hiker who had gone missing the year before, and a bear had found her...

Also, one time he was elk hunting in Oregon, and had hiked in ten miles, and was coming back, in the dark, and was still 4 miles from camp, in an area he had never been, and he walked into a clearing, and in his headlamp, walked up on a OLD abandoned cabin, so they went in and spent the night, the next morning, they discovered it had a toilet, and a shower, and a cubard full of old sardines, they were so hungry they ate them all, then when the explored outside, they found a spring, with tubing going down to the cabin.  The next year they went back and found a case of whiskey stashed in the attic.

Jeep,
Thanks for the info, it does look correct. The plane is in a canyon a couple miles below my Grandpa's old Elk camp and looking at the date of the wreck I am guessing the plane was flying low looking for Elk during season and couldn't climb fast enough to get out of the canyon.

Things I have found while hunting. I found myself "disoriented while hunting Elk in Oregon. I found a K-bar knife and a military compass while hunting sheep on the big Island of Hawaii. Pot plants here in Wash., a fine fly fishing pole while fishing at Hihume lake in Canada,(caught the floating line with my sink tip) A Shrade lock kinfe in Hawaii, a nice Mitchell 300 spinning reel laying in the trail in Alaska. An old loggers two hand saw still stuck in a tree, the tree had grown around it. A vintage brass fish rod holder way up in the mountains in W. Wash., lottsa old bottles, cans and lanterns at mining camps in Alaska. Dynamite in a minig shaft off Chinook pass. Some more pot, dried and in a baggie,a horse shoe, fossils. And I also have lost more than I've found. :bash:

I went back to where I shot my elk a couple years ago and found that apparently many others have shot animals there. I found a spent shell casing for a 300 win... 3 times, one for a 30.06, 4 times, and one for a .270... 3 times. Everytime I found one I'd toss it to the side and a few minutes later i'd find it again. Never did find the shell casing from my gun.

My hunting partner found a bow that was at least 10 years old.  I found a set of Binos with moss growing on them.  Found about a dozen arrows over the years.  And a pile of those foil ballons that wind up floating for miles before finally landing somewhere.  Seems like I'm destined to wad them up and pack them out...

And I've lost about 10 elk bugles and about 6 deer grunt calls.  Finders keepers.

Up towards the top of FSR 530?

I'm pretty sure I've seen them as well.

a solitary telegraph pole on a high peak- complete with insulators and about 4 feet of wire

a hot twenty something running down the trail in a skimpy jogging outfit deep in the Paysayten (a thousand feet above our drop camp) :dunno:.... she was exercising- on a jog.  by herself.

a bobcat that was stalking me (small young one)

The best thing was while I was salmon fishing in the middle of nowhere canada - a buddies dad uncovered an entrance to an old sea cave- went inside and found a native burial cave.  Complete with bentwood cedar boxes - most were tiny- probably from the small pox that wiped them out when the whites landed.  there were also large canoes- like 20-30 feet long propped up high on stumps in the middle of the woods with moss covered skulls and bones in them.  I know its not hunting related, but worth telling- he was the first to find it and nobody had been there for a long, long time.  It was creepy. :o

In the mid to late 90's while bow hunting for elk, I came across what was apparently an old horse camp (elk camp)
I found a rusted out cast iron cook stove and a rusty small wood stove like you'd see in a wall tent complete with rusted out stove pipe. There were old spent shell casings, some were driven into the meat pole. There were empty steel cans and pop or beer cans that were opened with the old style can openers. In the same spot I found some rotted leather horse hobbles, a broken lantern and a small double bitted axe with a rotted handle sunk into a block of wood. I kept the axe head. There was and old meat pole that was near rotten and an old fire pit that contained the old beer or pop bottle caps.

I ran into this old elk camp just after I had two very close encounters/opportunities at a six point bull and another bull that I never could quite see. Both bulls were within 30 - 50 yards screaming at me. Just could'nt close the deal. Then after a very exciting morning at about 10:30am, the elk shut up and disappeared. As I was making my way up out of that hole, I ran across the reminents of the old horse camp. I see why they were there. It was in a small saddle surrounded by three or four drainages that all held elk.

On another trip not far from this old elk camp, we found a set of binos that were almost brand new. My dad still uses them.

I found two twenty dollar bills inside a pack of (empty) swisher sweets.  I could see a little green in the window and thought that it looked odd.  I guess that is what you get for littering?

I found a fish and bird knife, I always wanted one of those.

Chips where the Indians made arrowheads.  I have found two of these areas actually.

A box canyon with a creek and huge pool in the middle of nowhere with all kinds of big trout and not one single Styrofoam worm container.

An axe in a tree, where someone stuck it into the tree with their arm extended.  I look in camps all the time.

I went back to where I shot my first deer a year latter and found my binoculars hanging on a limb where we gutted him out.  (I didn't even know they were gone, I was probably 10 at the time.)

I lost my wallet hunting one year with two special permits in it.  I tore the house apart trying to find that wallet as I didn't even know I lost it in the woods.  I got it back a year and a half latter, with the money, in the mail with no info on who found it or where they found it.  It was chewed up and pretty rough.  I found one small piece a year latter on a trail that I walked regularly, that is the only way I knew I lost it in the woods.  I sure would like to thank that guy.

A fish who died trying to eat a fish that was too big for him, it was the weirdest thing, I wish I had a camera.  At first I though that I was looking at a fish with two tails.

three years ago I found plane wreckage up in the Wilderness above Gold Creek while looking for elk.  Took down the tail # and reported it to FAA.  Got an email back that it was a couple of guys from Wenatchee in the 70's that went down in a storm.  Aluminum airframe still looked good.  Wreckage scattered down side of mountain as they clipped a big fir on the ridge, found most of the plane.

No, it was before I had a camera phone.  Terrain was so steep that with the 3-4" of snow it was nearly impossible to climb up and down the hill.  Fortunately, lots of trees and down logs to hang onto.  Saw some big elk tracks but nothing on the hoof.  I could probably get pretty close with coordinates off of a topo map though.

More finds.  A few years ago I found an old falling down miners cabin.  Was trying to sneak into a deep drainage and get in close to a bugling bull.  Looked around and there was an old collapsed entry to a shaft, wasn't a lot of piling outside though so it probably wasn't very deep.  Last year was the big find.  My hunting partner and I were about 7 miles back in and he found two full cases of Budweiser cans under some brush.  Being the great buddy he is, he drank one, put it back and DIDN'T bring one down off the ridge for me.  Fortunately it was during September archery and it was only like 85 degrees out.  Might be time to find a new hunting buddy.

About 10 years back, I was out bear hunting on the coast.  I parked my truck and started walking through the timber.  About 4 hours later, and a couple miles into BFE, i sat down under this tree and was taking my sandwich out of my pack.  A pine cone fell on my head, and I looked up and there was another hunter sitting in a freakin tree stand directly above me.  Needless to say, I came about as close as I could to SH***IN my shorts, and I took off running and screaming like a little girl, i left my back pack and my binos behind, and dint even think about going to get em.  Hope the dude enjoyed em.

I was hunting over at Yakima and heard someone screaming.  It was my first year hunting in WA and my first thought was that someone shot my twin brother who I had just split up with.  I took off in the direction of then screaming and it kept getting louder and louder.  I finally came upon a boy about 9 years old who had gotten lost.  All he had to do was start walking dow hill and he would have been fine no matter which way he went.  I guess at 9 years old, the woods can get scary really fast.

I walked him back down to the road where he met up with is family.
