My son is young and just starting a family so is on a budget but wants to build a 6.5 creedmore. Which rifle would you guys recommend more the savage axis or the ruger American?
-
Ruger, but why rebuild the American, why not just buy the Ruger Preditor in 6.5 Creed already done?
-
Lol as I was typing I was thinking "I bet phool says ruger"
-
Can't say anything bad about either one as a budget rifle.

;) I hear the Axis is a good gun too, I've just never owned one so can't recommend it.

Ah, "American Preditor", I see they make it in 6.5.

Not sure about American and I was skeptical on the Axis with some reviews I read so I didn't purchase it initially. I went with a .111 in 7mm. I received an Axis in .270 for Christmas and its nice. The only complaint I have with it is the heavy trigger in the 1st generation Axis models (1 i received) versus the next generation that just came out that has the accutrigger stock. With a decent scope, factory trigger and factory ammo (not handloads) I've gotten mine to shoot within 3/4" groups at 100yds. I'd imagine with the trigger upgrade and handloads I could tighten that up even more.

You say he's going to "build a 6.5 Creedmoor"? So what exactly does that mean? Aftermarket stock, trigger, bedding job, etc?
A good option would be a Howa barreled action. Then he could purchase the stock he wants. And the Howa trigger should be good enough until he can afford to buy a better one.

A simple DIY spring swap on that Axis (v1) will make it night and day. Search on youtube and you will see it, uses a spring from a ballpoint pen. I have done it 2x and each time the trigger went from a hard gritty 6.5-7# to around 3.5# trigger and they shoot lights out consistent. Bang for the buck I put $ on the Axis, they are just very hard to beat if you need a gun you can pull out of box for <$400 (with glass) and shoot MOA or better with off the shelf ammo.
The Axis can make an ok base for a budget build ( awesome for those <$700 - 700yrd sort of thing. But the Boyds stocks have jumped in price $144 now for base stock+shipping and options?) and they do not come in Creedmore that I have seen yet so you are looking at a barrel swap which just jumped the $ again. Finding something factory made in caliber might be a better choice. There are a few Savage models in 6.5 creedmore want to say the model 11 or 111 that might be an option?

build was probably not the right term. He initially wanted to build an ar10 and I told him it would be much cheaper to buy an American, so he started researching and found that the axis might be a viable alternative. The howa's are a good deal. I had one in .223 that shot very well

spent 100 bucks more and buy a savage 111, much better rifle imo

I have an axis II in .223 and it is a great shooter. I would recommend those guns to anyone. With the savages, barrel swaps and aftermarket upgrades are very easy if he ever decides to build it up. Also savage is having a rebate deal on all of their rifles right now.

I own the American in .308 and it's a great budget gun. Light weight and spot on.
