Title: Has anybody shot these or any type of bullets that don't require sabots
Post by: Bow tech hunter on February 13, 2016, 01:17:03 PM: Looking for opinions on these I got two different types of ammo to test for next season last time I shot bullets with a sabot but saw these on sale at bass pro shop figure I snag what was left but has any body shot bullets this type and how was my choice of caps and the powder in going to shoot 777 and the other brand to see which is a better load thanks this will be second year muzzleloading I also bought the traditional 209 track muzzeloader and the nipple was changed out by the dealer before I left the store so it's legal for Washington

I have shoot 4 deer with then all one shot one kill

Post by: The Gobble-stopper on February 19, 2016, 10:17:20 PM: I like the Barnes TEZ. Great, tight patterns. Great weight retention. Recovered bullet the same as shown in the post above. Shot an elk a couple years ago. 100 yards in the neck, and it didn't even wiggle. Dead as a doornail.

Post by: jmsurra on February 27, 2016, 04:08:40 PM: I've shot a number of each kind. They all have their own good features and drawbacks. Sometimes the sabots can leave enough plastic on the barrel walls that they don't load easily after a small number of shots, but there are times the non-saboted bullets can load pretty tough, pretty fast from the fouling buildup. Some guys claim one powder or pellet is worse than the other, so I've bought 777s and White-hots and the others, and one may let you shoot 8 or ten times before you have to clean your barrel, and the other might be about 6 or 8. Not a whole lot different, in my book. I'm certainly no expert in muzzleloaders yet, but I've adopted a policy of having three field rods and some rags, etc. when I go to the range, because you never know how many shots it's going to take before the loading gets tough. With the three rods, as soon as one starts to bind, I clean the barrel after that shot, and get back to shooting.
Now, as for bullets, I have to say that right now I like the convenience of Powerbelts over messing about with sabots, but I can't bear witness to their efficacy in the field on big game. My thinking on this is that a .50 Caliber bullet would logically have more punch than a .45 Caliber (used in the sabots) when it hits the animal. It's more than ten percent bigger in diameter, so that's a lot more surface area impacting the animal. I came to this conclusion after watching my 45/70 destroy a target, :yike: after first firing my 30-30 at the same target. I haven't decided whether one or the other is more accurate yet. I need to do a lot more shooting and experimenting before I make such a judgement. Also, I've heard that some of the bullets don't penetrate or wound as completely as others. Muzzleloading doesn't seem that different from regular shooting, but it is! :P

To be honest, I think any one of the bullets you have there would drop a deer or elk without any problem, whether saboted or non-saboted.

If you'd like to get together for some shooting at the range sometime, I'm not far away. In fact, I was in Centralia this morning. Do you have any good ranges around there?

Post by: Myrtle Creek Inc. on March 04, 2016, 08:33:09 AM: We have not had a lot of feedback on the Hornady FPB, however I will say that I have had very impressive feedback on the Thor's. They are a very similar bullet in overall function and design, however the Thor is bore specific, which provides better accuracy overall. I've found that every person has their preference in bullets and powder, just like preference in cars. It all comes down to your personal preference and hunting style.

New to black powder shooting, but like the copper jackets engaged with the rifling. Seems like with sabots the bullet isn't going to get as perfect a spin.
