I love that a gsp won this year what a great looking dog.
Was disappointed that they had 5 different cocker spaniels and 3 other spaniels but no boykins...

I always watch, I also watch the show on Thanksgiving every year and often have dogs owned by people I know at these shows.
I was thrilled the GSP won it made me happy, even if I was team Borzoi.

Mixed emotions for me watching the GSP win. On the one hand I like to see a "real" dog win it and it is my breed of choice. On the other hand I predict that there will be a lot of GSP's up for adoption or being "re-homed" in about 12 to 18 months. CJ appeared so mellow when he was on TV and a lot of people are going to think it would be cool to get one and believe they are nice mellow dogs. Once the get a puppy and realize they are crack-dogs they won't be able/willing to keep them. Hope I'm wrong, but that's my prediction.
I've been around shorthairs for the last 25 years. I am afraid you are 100% completely correct. My current GSP, has taught me a new level of patience. Awesome dogs, but you have to know what to expect. They aren't labs that lay around all day. :twocents:

There are other problems that can come of it too like people watering down the breed to make dogs suitable for "pet homes" and then there are the backyard breeders that will inevitably hum to life trying to cash in...

I feel the same way. My eight year old gsp still has more energy then most 1 year old dogs of other breeds.

Happy for any dogs success at anything but can that GSP hunt? That's what I care about. Show dogs and hunting dogs just aren't the same even if they look alike.
I 100% agree. I feel that the akc has destroyed many dog breeds.

For anyone that has purchased a purebred AKC pup lately, the costs have gone thru the roof, these breeders are gouging people terribly, the AVG price is about $1000 per dog. I refused to pay that this time around, I wanted a good hunting dog and family pet, I could care less about paper and ribbons. These self righteous A-holes just went on and on about how you shouldn't breed non papered animals because of health issues etc., I understand all that BUT the reason we have to check the eyes hips, elbows, etc is from over breeding of AKC animals, WTF? Got tired of them trying to justify the outrageous dog prices and belittling everyone else who disagreed with them so I unliked the page, I'm not here to judge people, if they want a ribbon dog and do field trials, etc. have at it, just don't badmouth everyone else that doesn't require the ego boost from getting ribbons :bash:

That's why I specifically looked for a drahthaar. They go back to old style German hunt test and only breed for what the dog was originally intended to do and that was hunt. I agree akc has ruined the setter I really wanted another but i didn't want to take the risk of a akc inbred.
That's also one of the reasons that I got a drahthaar also. I don't think I will own a different breed now.

I had "Liked" a Labrador Breeders/Owners webpage on Facebook quite awhile ago and happened to comment on a post yesterday about non papered Purebred dogs, for those of you who didn't know, I have always owned AKC Labs, in fact, my entire life, a year ago I purchased a non papered purebred lab pup from a breeder in Selah, was able to see both parents beforehand and the pups were beautiful. My lab looks like a $1500 pup but I was NOT paying that price anymore. I paid $350 for him and have been extremely happy with the Pup.If you want a non=papered dog that is your right.

However the last group of folks I heard go on and on about how great their unpapered and unhealth certified dogs were ended up with almost half the litter EIC affected.
So, if you like the risk, then that is up to you but there are plenty of folks not willing to take the risk.

Stop looking at AKC and look for FDSB registered dogs or dogs that are dual registered. Buy from up close field trial lines with dogs that have CH, Nat'l CH, or HOF by their names in quantity in the pedigree and you won't have a problem getting a good hunting dog. Hard to train and unhealthy dogs don't win field trials let alone championships.

The pup is a nice dog. Very easy to handle, eager pleaser, and has a nose like a cannon. Can't speak to his field trial potential but as a hunter he's about the best dog I've ever owned and the best bred.
Mine are dual registered, the stud dog I own was a top 5 dog for 3 years in his field trial Carreer he amassed 37 wins in akc,ckc and AF sanctioned trials he was retired with enough points to be a 4x field champ. The dog was consistent everytime he was turned loose you knew he could win. His last trial was 3 wins 2 firsts and a second. Found 17 birds in three at bats. Think I could sell any pups? Nope sold 2 of 9 gave 3 away and still have 4. 2 of those need new homes where they can get used more than I can give them[.
