I'm leaving for elk river id tonight until the 28th to bag a wolf. I'll try an update when I can. I'll be walking forest roads not plowed covering as much ground as possible. If I can find some recent activity I'll pack in an set up camp. Going to stay in my rig the remainder of the time. Wish me luck
Make it a photo trip, without a snowmobile or bait getting a wolf could be harder than getting an elk in oct.

Woke up this morning to 20 cows an calves in a bunch. Right above them were 4 big bulls. 8 whitetails and 4 other elk I scared off howling. Moved over to a service road by Jericho mt. Hiked up to it and am going tostay for a few days. Lots of sign. Getting up early for a all day hunt tomorrow. End of day three.
I wonder where they were during season? There was a lot of people hunting there and all I heard about was a few deer and a wolf. We wandered over to Weitas Ck and some guy got a spike.

How's the snow over there?On the north face depending on elevation is ranging from a couple feet to around 6'. I was as high as 4500' today and the s face had a couple ft. The n face I was walking on 6'. Down around 3000' there are still high accumulations in the shadows. During the day you haveto pick and choose where you walk for the sink factor. Sun on the snow=sink to the knee. Snow in the shade=frozen concrete.

What I've learned.
If anyone says they shot a wolf over here in the timber, they're lying. They are probably a thief too.
These wolves use the roads like we do. I've noticed more traffic on the closest roads to high snow levels, where as elk and deer are the next tier down.
They are spotting them and smelling them from above.
I have not seen one wolf track that is not moving. So I feel my chances are better finding a good location and staying. Letting them make a round.
Good hike today, feel more confident for tomorrow. Beef stroganoff with noodles, then bed.

You find any kills yet? The bear guy said he had a little luck with a cow call. He didn't get one in but had one answer him. Is there lot of snowmoble tracks up there. Can you get in Swamp Ck rd., if so go to the first right and to the gate at the end of the road. Straight back is a new clearcut, to the rt is reprod, and N of the CC is timber with more trails then you can count. Going E on the trails will take you to a huge CC canyon. There was wolves there during elk season.No kill sites found yet. I have been keeping an eye on the ravens with no luck. No snowmobile tracks over here. You must be talking about fisher ck rd. You can only make it a few hundred yards to the rock pit, so I'll have to hike in 2 3/4 miles. I will run it in the morning, or later this evening. I have classes from my vantage point since light this morning with no movement. Going to head back to camp here in a bit to clean up, change, an reorganize. Shed hunt this spot I've been hiking past an game plan my attack for tonight.

I don't know fisher Ck.Rd, The sign says Swamp Ck, but there is a big rock quarry there. A couple of miles in will get you to the phone booth, you'll know it when you see it. There's a bunch of CC there, I upset a pack there one night with an elk bugle. The gate on to Potlatch ground is another 5 miles back.On the map it looks like a big meadow about 3 miles in? I'm on my way down there now. Wish I could drive to it. Found a deer leg while shed hunting. Couldn't find the rest.

Took a 3 hr hike without seeing a wolf track. Disappointed with that since I felt this was my best chance in the best area I've found.
Have not seen 1 lion track or scat.
Have not seen 1 mule deer.
Have not found a shed. I'm the worlds worst horn hunter.
Will not ever be able to clean all this yogert up.

No coyote sign, there was some during deer season. There was tracks and some howling. Maybe they moved down to the lake where there is less snow.Coyotes, there's tons of coyotes. I went back up because I feel like its to hot in that basin. I feel as though even if there is less game the wolves are higher. Who knows I'm doing everything I can.
Almost forgot, I'm 71% sure I saw a cougar this morning.

Thanks for taking us on your adventure !!I was originally going to hunt on the north fork until I heard they only plow a couple miles out of Pierce. So I would say yes go for it. With the way the weather was you might not need tracks. If I would have had a 4 wheeler this trip may have reached one of my all time greats. Go
