Post by: demontang on January 27, 2009, 04:52:05 PM: What's your opinion on these cals for a AR15 upper? I want to get a cal I can shot deer with and was looking at these because they would work for small game as well. :dunno:

i havent really heard much about the wssm. the 243 is a proven round and an ar would kick ass. i biult a .223 ar thought about the 243 but i like to shoot till its dead on yotes :mgun:and if i had the 243 i would have to take it deer hunting and then shoot till its dead would take over and bad things would happen... :devil:

Good luck with those numbers... especially in a gas-gun.

Post by: demontang on January 28, 2009, 05:46:21 PM: I'm look toward the 243 a little more after doing some more looking. The 25 seems to have a little longer COAL and you have to seat the bullets a little deeper then the reloading data shows.

I would be afraid of feeding issues. Another round to look at is the 6.5 Grendel or the 6.8 spc. Both would work on animals up to deer size, just not as flat as the wssm's.

I have looked at the 6.5 and 6.8 but if I where to get something like that I would just steep up to the 6.5 creedmoor or 6.5/284. And the brass/bullets for the WSSM's is a lot easier to find then the 6.5 or 6.8. Loaded ammo is available around here in the WSSM but not the 6.5/6.8 and the ballistics are far better. :twocents:

Would be AWESOME though. 1000 yards would be a possibility. I'm thinking of building one, just haven't jumped toward one yet, still thinking I need a big long range elk/bear gun. In the AR15 platform though there is definitely some limits on what you can build.

Post by: FALFire on January 31, 2009, 09:03:31 PM: I have one of the Oly Arms 243WSSM upper in 20". One modified 20 round USGI mag will hold 6 rounds of anything up to and including 100 grain bullets. There is no feeding issues with the WSSM AR's, they feed 100 percent everytime. The bolt guns had feeding problems but the way the AR bolt strips the round from the mag it goes straight into the chamber with no tilt up at all. Either the 243 or 25 WSSM's are great choices and both will take deer or elk without a problem if staying within the limits of the bullet being used.

They are sometimes called barrel burners but mine has had several hundred rounds fired thru it and it is still increadibly accurate. Just don't load up and start bump firing the thing with 55gr bullets in it. If you stay with the 75-95 grain bullets the barrel will last a very long time. Brass is very strong and lasts forever, brass is also available from many local stores or internet sales.

I would recommend a custom build by either:
