Title: Ewe Permits for Clemans
Post by: Naches Sportsman on March 03, 2016, 08:07:49 PM: From what I have heard in an attempt to reduce the herd, there will be ewe permits issued for clemans this year. Anyone have any Intel on how many the plan on allocating to the muckleshoots, yakamas, and us?

There's over 250 sheep in the herd and growing pretty fast. Have to keep the numbers in check.

Perhaps because they would probably be back on Clemons within 2 days? The 1st day they look across the river and see their home range they will be there. Never would work. They need to bring sheep from a completely different area and then they would stick.

If they did, all you would hear is "why don't they let us hunt them rather than move them?"

So why would you risk moving a handful of sheep across a small river knowing the odds of return are great? The Clemons herd has been the states biggest sheep hatchery by far. They have moved hundreds of sheep out of there over the years.

They have to deal with the disease source and grazing that occurs on the upper end of the unit.

Post by: scree on March 05, 2016, 11:20:57 PM: It is correct that they can't move sheep from Clemans to the Tieton because they will simply walk home. Also the reason that that they do not want sheep back in the Tieton yet is because the domestic sheep situation has not yet been resolved. The USFS domestic sheep grazing allotments in that area are quite likely the culprit that caused the die-off in the first place. WA WSF is has started a partnership with the National Wildlife Federation, a group that has had many successes in both Montana and Idaho in facilitating amicable resolutions in retiring domestic sheep/goat grazing allotments. WDFW is also working very hard on it on their end. I know that many of you will question WDFW working hard on anything but in this case I can tell you that they are.
There was a capture planned for this winter to move Clemans sheep to the Quilomene; however upon capturing a sheep they tested it and received a positive result for Movi (the bacteria that causes pneumonia). This of course put everything on hold. Upon retesting, they believe that the first test was a false positive but by the time it was all sorted out the weather warmed up and it was no longer feasible to put that kind of stress on the animals.
personally I hate seeing ewes harvested but considering that every single grazing season that passes we are playing Russian roulette with every single sheep in the region I do believe that reduction of the herd is the smart course of action.
