Not sure if I will be there in June. I usually start fishing it as early as mid April, depending on water and weather. I love our trips to the Palouse. I started getting bait last weekend!

Have any of you guy's ever caught a blue cat or a flathead on the Snake River? I've fished Farewell Bend before and caught some nice fat blue's and an oriental guy was there with cages set on the water to keep his fish alive and he was catching BIG flathead cat's with a cool piebald color of a banana yellow and brown speckling. Who else has seen this?

Fishing has been good to excellent since mid April. In my opinion waiting for June is waiting to late. Don't forget your bug spray. Seems like it's going to be very bad year for bugs. If you take your dog and/or you plan on getting out of the boat for your bathroom breaks, try to do it in the sage brush areas. The tall grass is swarming with ticks!

All right,  got my reservations for June 3 to 6 made. I will be there with my family  but someone is going to need to teach me how ND what to use to catch catfish.

Was not sure if I was going to make it or not, a lot of crap has went down the last few months,  but my daughter wants to go and relax and try something new. Don't know exactly how she is going to feel, she has her second chemo treatment on June 1 and we are driving over on Friday morning. Just hope she is up to it, be a use she is looking forward to this trip.

I'm ready to get there!
Will be arriving around noon on Friday.
Will put the boat in the water at a slip and then go set up camp.
After camp is set up will then head out in the boat and run the flats balls to the wall wide open making a new trail on the GPS, for some reason I lost the last track I "saved" on my GPS.

im pretty green when it comes to fishing catfish, my arsenal consists of a chicken liver and a weight in the past.

from what I looks like, a 1/2oz or better weight, with a 4/0 hook and some fresh cut bait is the ticket?

what else should I be arming myself with?
Title: Re: Catfishing the almighty palouse river
Post by: h20hunter on May 31, 2016, 03:57:39 PM
I don't know the legality of this but we used to catch a local forage fish...perch....bluegill....take a strip of meat off the side and use a small float AFTER the hook to suspend the bait off the bottom.  Online I'm sure you can find an illustration but my theory was it made the bait "swim" when fished in any type if water flow. Strikes were always solid compared to a gentle pull while fishing directly on bottom.

need to get gunny sack full of baby rattlesnaks, hook them through the mouth, that's how you catch the big fish

I'm going to try to be there somewhat early Friday, I've never ran the river there though, what's the channel like going into the palouse? Hopefully I can hook up and follow someone once, I don't need much water though, so it might be a non issue.

Usually there is stakes you stick to the right of.......:) :)

Havent seen those in 2 years now.

Pretty much hammer down, close your eyes and hold on.  you'll make it through....maybe.

When you get there make sure im not stuck lol.

If you do get stuck, don't just jump out of the boat.  Trim up and paddle as best you can or push off the bottom.  Last resort get in the water and push the boat, but that mud is deep and sticky and walking in it isn't the most fun or easy thing to do.

Milfoil is my biggest enemy, long as I can keep the intake clean I think I'll be ok.

Not going to make it this year, but I always follow the thread and hope to join you in the next year or two.  A question: can a driftboat be rowed up into the Palouse where I need to be for the catfish?  Thanks, and good luck, tight lines everyone! - Moe

There really isn't any milfoil to worry about but the first year newbie and I went we didn't get up on plane fast enough and chumming through all the muddy water sucked as I was too far in to even get the boat up. >:(  We were returning at night and only a headlamp to guide us. I recall the finder showing less than a foot in places.  Anyone crossed this year yet?

The non-spawners in the Snake later in the season have better quality more tender meat.

Here are Rashell and ,y biggest cats.

It was a tough weekend for catching cats. We managed a few and I got to meet a few people. The bass and walleye fishing was pretty good if you could brave the heat. Always good to get a glimpse of the resident moose as well.

Rasbo,
I'll trade you the onion ring recipe for your hot sauce recipe.

I should apologize for stealing your jar of hot sauce you put out for us for the burritos.  I put the jar in the cooler to keep it cool and once I got home realized I still had it.  I thought about bringing it back to you, but decided to keep it and put it on every meal till it was empty.  Ridiculous stuff.

And where is a good spot to bank fish on the poluse. And also what is a good bait to use. And is it best to fish at night? Hopeing to get some good feed back.

Thinking of going to the Palouse River for a few days in about a month and don't think the KOA will have any spots to stay. Any body have any ideas on where to stay near by camping or at a motel. Never been over there and want to try for some catfish. Also if you use the KOA to launch is there any time restrictions for launching or fees. Looks like the state launch is a time from i believe 7-7 day use only prohibiting night fishing. Thanks for any help. It should be pretty cool trip if i can plan it right.

Cool thanks guys. The website said the koa was all booked but i gave them a call and they ended up with 1 tent site left. Im all set for camping. Now just have to pack everything and start preping for the trip. Hope my schedule dont change for work. If that stays the same it will be a good trip. This will be the first trip taking my boat on a river so it will be interesting. I will be using a 16 foot semi v john boat with a 25 horse mercury prop. Good boat that should be able to run shallow enough throuhout most the areas.

Thanks for the tip.
Do you feel going further up in the boat is typically better for cats, or staying out on the flats? I hear fishing really shallow is best. Under 4 feet. Gonna have plenty of worms and gonna stop and gather some cut bait the day before to ensure i have some when i get there. But whats everyones favorite baits? I hear of a lot of baits to use for cats but local favorites are always prefered.

Also is there a lot of carp in the area to bring the bow or should that just be left at home?

Thanks for the tips

I use trout that I've caught. Cut it into about two inches. No weight. Stay fairly shallow. You'll see carp fins everywhere. The cats are eatingbtheir eggs a lot. But find a calm spot and make a splash. They come over to investigate. Then set the hook.

with the state of things, that being consistent rain fall up high, it might be a chocolate mess well into summer but that shouldn't keep fish from biting if you're parking in the right neighborhood

We have done well in the past for both Blue and Channel Cats on the Snake above and below Ice Harbor Dam. The biggest fish seemed to be on the north side along the RXR Tracks among the rocks over 20 feet down, we were using night-crawlers. The majority of the fish we caught during the daylight hours when the Oceangoing Tugs pushing Barges would come through the Locks. The stagnant water would start moving and so would the Cats and the bite would be on.

One of the days a large swarm of black ants made it only half way across the river and soon the water was alive all around the boat with rising Smallmouth Bass. If we had only brought the Fly Rods along.... what a time we could have had. The Smallmouth we did catch tasted pretty muddy compared to our Catfish, the cold water on the bottom really improves their flesh and they have a nice layer of fat on them.

These were actually caught on the Iowa river, in Iowa of course. Biggest one in the two pictures on the log was 63#’s. I haven’t catfished since moving here. My brother in picture. They sure do put up a fight!

I ran to up to the mud flat in my boat, I am going to need someone to show me the channel before I take my new boat across that. The water at little goose was considerably cleaner looking than the water below by lyons ferry (duh, Tucannon and Palouse Rivers) but hopefully she's getting cleaned out I want to catch some food!

Speed is the key on that channel.  Don't come off of plane until you hit the falls!!

I kid - I've had good luck far left against the rock cliff, or just left of the main Palouse channel.

It's pretty high right now so you should be good.

I turned around at 1.2' according to my main nav set. I can get my boat up to about 47 MPH with peeps and gear and beer and a full tank of fuel, I think I could rip through there but I didn't feel like that was the adult thing to do

I would think that some of the new fishfinders with Side Imaging would give a good profile of the "channel".  I'm headed there later this month but will have my smaller boat that doesn't have a unit in it.

Post by: 92xj on May 02, 2019, 08:18:27 AM
There really is no channel in the mud flat.
All of it is going to read between .5' and 1.5'.
The key is to hammer down and just go.  I line up aiming at the left bank of the mouth of the river, then full throttle.  You'll be fine, just do not throttle down.  When you hear your engine bog just a little, don't panic, keep it throttled up and just power through it.
Title: Re: Catfishing the almighty palouse river
Post by: Bill W on May 02, 2019, 08:23:35 AM
last time I was there we found "channels" or a depression in the mud lowered from moving water.  They weren't deep as it was only about 3'.
Title: Re: Catfishing the almighty palouse river
Post by: 92xj on May 02, 2019, 08:31:27 AM
Must have been a big prop that ran the day before digging that channel for you.  :chuckle:

Right now, with snow melt run off, you might see 3' randomly somewhere. Either way, avoid the stump, and power up, I've never had an issue running multiple lines, getting over the flat and into or out of the river. Unless I stopped on purpose, and then it sucked for the next 30 minutes walking the boat or having to trim way up and move at 2 mph until deeper water.

Weirdest river i've ever fished......

Biggest Carp I’ve ever caught. Just up the snake from the Palouse. Use to fish cat there every Memorial Weekend.

Many an afternoon was spent sitting on the bank with a can of corn carp fishing as a kid in Minnesota.

I know exactly where that is, that's a great spot across the mouth of the "little river" river is a huge mud flat

I think that was my first year fishing Cat. That was on our bait pole that we were fishing for peamouth and squaw fish to cut up. Catching that carp and dragging it across the mud on an ultra-lite was a kick in the pants. Buddies-Moms-Boyfriend  :o had a boat that he and buddies brother would fish out of, while buddy and I were left to the bank. Buddy got a boat from a coworker that year (for free) and we were off the bank after that. I think we pulled more fish off the bank though!  :dunno:

If you fish that area at all it is very recognizable and not much of a secret... why I wasn't too worried about posting a picture.  ;)

Went up the Palouse River yesterday, surface watertemp was 63 degrees according to my stuff. water was clean looking too, wind was blowing hard enough that my anchors kept pulling free

it was blowing so hard I left, no fish only got about 20-30 minutes of actually fishing in, I was by myself and fighting the wind trying to anchor up, or use my trollling motor. I got too frustrated and headed home

I’ll be over June 20-23! What size line and hooks does everyone recommend? Never caught a “real” cat

Scott from YJ took my dad and I out a few weeks ago. Had a good time but the cats weren't interested. Scott switched us up on the fly for some action and the walleye were biting good.

The cabins were real nice!

There is more wooden debris in the snake and inside the mouth of the Palouse than I have ever seen before, I wine yesterday and there were ski boats and jet skis and kayaks everywhere and it made fishing it a pain

  :yeah:
I'm working in Lewiston this week and the river seems to be moving fast and has alot of debris from what I can see. That's probably not helping the temperature come up for catfishing... :dunno:

seems like everything has been a lot slower, even the walleye bite has been way off this whole spring

Went through Central Ferry around midnight and stopped and walked down to the water to take a look. There was a few fingerling smallmouths and I netted a 2 inch catfish that looks like a fatbellied Bullhead pkus another catfish baby that's black... What are they? I'll post a pic tomorrow.

Looking on google the tackle warehouse is closed in Starbuck? Any other tackle shops nearby or do I need to bring everything with me? Meaning like worms for bait for catfish bait

The KOA has some gear but bring what you’ll need just in case.

Pics didn't turn out in the dark for those fingerlings. It's a long ways from anything so bring everything you need. KOA doesn't have much besides overpriced snacks and drinks.

Yeah, imho, the KOA is basically useless.  Don't even carry simple boat gear such as fuel lines..  don't ask how I know..  there for a while they were out of stock of Mt. Dew and Pepsi.  Place has drastically went down hill since they became a KOA :twocents:

Great folks at the koa,the place is doing great compared to ten yrs ago. They aren't in the marine business, prices are steep but hey bring what you need, pretty much that way on most seasonal businesses. They've been good to a lot of folks on this site.
