Title: Montana hunt planner map
Post by: Martinhunter on March 06, 2016, 10:32:00 PM
Just been doing lots of research of the area ruttnbuck and I will be hunting if we draw our general deer tags next month. Looking at the hunt planner map in the "legend" tab it shows what color is what property which makes it obvious but what about the area with no color? Is this private land? It doesn't specify the white color on the list to the left. Does anyone happen to know what this white colored land signifies? I put a screen shot up for an example.

Obviously the yellow is BLM and blue is state land.  All the white is private land and not allowed to hunt on without specific permission.  Things to remember when trying to access the public land,  there has to be a City, County, State, or Federal road touching it or you cannot access it.  If there is a railroad crossing it anywhere you cannot cross the railroad.  You can use the normal high water mark of official streams, creeks, rivers, to access land if no road is present and to cross under a railroad.  If the land you are trying to access only touches another public land at the corner (checkerboard effect) it is not legal to access it.

Pay attention to the BMA mapping system that comes out August 15th, any land pubic or private that is part of a BMA may have to follow specific rules of said BMA.

Hope that helps, there is probably some that I am forgetting but will post if they come to me.

Just something to remember too, you can drive (any established two-track road) and camp on BLM land (yellow), but you can't drive on the school trust land (blue) unless there is a county road or something that runs through it.

I suggest you locate the GMU you are planning on hunting and purchase one of these. They are very nice and detailed. http://www.mytopo.com/products/hunt-area-state.cfm?state=MT

Yea its kinda crazy that you can't step from the corner of state land onto the corner of an adjoining piece of state land but that's trespassing.  800,000 acres in montana are locked from public access this way.

Thanks for the info guys, I assumed it was private land but wasn't sure. Yeah I'm gonna be checking out BMA list when it comes out.

One of the best things you an do is buy yourself a handheld GPS unit with the landowner chip.  They show public, private, and BMA boundaries.  I wont go out of state again without it and especially Montana.  The state has been working a land swap program with the ranchers to create more accessible public land and the BLM maps don't get updated yearly.

And do not trust any gazetteer you buy at a store.

Buy the On Xmaps chip for Montana, it works great! Me and my buddy hunted Montana last year for the first time and it helped lots! Don't hesitate to call the state and ask questions they are very helpful and they will mail you large maps of all seven regions if you ask.

Ditto!
Used the MT and WY Xmaps chips last year, we hunted the border, came in very handy, especially when confronted by an adjacent land owner asking if we knew which state we were hunting!🤓 I even had a map of BLM land in the area from the dept. of interior, it was different than the chip, so I checked the county assessor web page, bingo, the map was wrong and the chip was right! Get the chip and hunt!

I get it on my phone and it is the best money a guy can spend.  It even has the BMA properties.
