Title: 300 weatherby
Post by: quarterstaff on March 09, 2016, 08:53:35 PM
Howdy,
I have a Weatherby Vanguard in 300 Weatherby, I enjoy shooting it and have recently started reloading for it, my question is; does anybody have any experience with this cartridge and what are your favorite bullets, powders and velocities for target practice and hunting up to elk sized game?
Thanks in advance

Fed 215, I think 86.0 grains of 7828 and Nos 180 Partition.  I have shot this load for almost thirty years and it is great out of my Mod 70.

I just got mine set up and I'm going to re load some Weatherby cases with Barnes 165 gr TSXs on top of between 75.5 and 80.5 grains of IMR 4350, that's what the Barnes reloading manual calls for anyway for most accurate load. They also used Federal GM215M primers which are match grade that you don't really need unless you're shooting match I guess so the 215 will work. I'm looking forward to breaking this thing in as soon as this weather breaks. :bash: If I go to the 150 TSXs then I'll use Vit N 165 but the IMR 4350 is also listed.

Thanks,
I am using 78.6 grns IMR 4831 and Lapua 155 moly coated hpbt's and Fed 215's for 3400 fps. I am using the Lapua's only because I got a spanking deal on them, as far as the 215 primers go everything I've read says that's the one to use. Good luck on your load.

I have three friends that are crazy 300WBY fans.  All three made the switch to the 165 TTSX when it came out.  All three say they will never shoot anything else!  Two of them did go on a mountain goat hunt in AK and said they might choose a different bullet if they ever went after mountain goat again, but that would be their only exception.

I'm not sure what loads or speeds they are getting.  But it must be some impressive speeds as I believe all three have had bear kills over 400 yards with no tracking required.

That load I give is absolutely max and is more than is published in a lot of manuals.  I will try to get over to the shop and see if my notes tell me which loading manual it came out of.  Work up if you use it.  It shoots three shots touching for me out of a cold barrel and always has.

Make certain to use the Fed 215 primers w/the 300 Wby.  It is practically essential.

Regarding the TTSX, I will never purchase any Barnes product ever.  I used to run SPORTCO's hunting/shooting counter ~ 25 years ago and at that time Barnes was busy lobbying the legislatures and game departments of practically all western States to go "lead free."  I have nothing against a business trying to increase their market share by building a better product, but trying to legislate market share is despicable.

We had good luck with IMR 4831 and 165gr Interlocks.

We've shot the barrel out of my 300 wthby and I am getting it rebarreled this year so I will have to find a new best load. I've seen hundreds of animals and probably over 100 elk killed with a 300 wtby, much of that with Walmart Remington 180 coreloks which my rifle shoots the best of any bullet I've bought loaded or hand loaded, (ya I know crazy, but true). After trying many different rounds I've learned that pretty much any bullet placed in the kill zone from a 300 wtby will do the job, even at ranges beyond 500 yds for most bullets.

You probably already know this, you will need to shoot your gun and see what it likes, many guns work best with different loads.

300 Wby, 22-250, 17 Rem all have pretty much identical trajectory out to wherever they are effective.  I have used that trio since ~ 1990 and pretty much knowing where my bullet is going to impact before laser range finders was a big plus.

180 accubonds ,  I'd keep 180s and under to assure stabilizing  hornady sst is another fine choice .

It made it a lot easier on this guy to get solid and shoot over the years when I knew where my bullet would impact.  The rifles were different, but where they put a bullet was pretty much a known commodity.
