Hello! I'll start with a little about myself. I grew up in Lake Stevens and have lived in the area since. I did 6 years in the Guard and I currently work at Boeing. I got a late start with hunting as I'm 29 and I started last fall. I was able to harvest, almost exclusively with only the help of this forum, a little blacktail spike, with my own handloads, which was extremely rewarding. I was hooked. I've drawn the Monroe unit for this spring. I've read a wealth of knowledge on here in the black bear section over the last 6 months or so. What happens next? Do I get something in the mail? Where in 448 am I allowed to hunt? I've got some 150gr Hornady Interlocks loaded up from deer season but I see 165 and 180 grain pills recommended for black bear. Will these 150gr rounds be sufficient? I have a fox pro predator call I picked up for coyotes. Will this work alright or is a manual call better?
Besides asking for do's and don'ts and general info on this year's spring bear hunt, I'm curious to see if there are any experienced bear hunters who might be willing to help me out with this tag. I definitely do not want to waste it. Thanks!
Eta, I should also note that I'm looking for a partner to do other hunting with as well. I intend on doing the high buck hunt this fall and would really like to find some one who is willing and able to partner up with

We ate getting together at Skookum Brewery tomorrow night....6 pm....come on up and let's talk bears.

I was drawn for this tag last year. In the next couple of weeks you will receive in the mail information about a meeting to attend at the mill creek fish and game office for early April. They will go over basic information and give you the combo to the gates as well as a general map and the purpose of the hunt. If you are unable to make the meeting you will have to meet with the biologist briefly to go over the same info. Once you have that you are free to go out and start hunting.
Last year was my first year really hunting bears and I was unable to seal the deal. Its a real tough hunt. A couple of the properties have bait locations right along roads that they don't want you hunting near so be mindful of where those are located.

What cartridge are you shooting? 150s should be fine for bear. Get out and do some coyote calling in the unit as the season approaches and keep your eyes open for bear sign.

Awesome! I won't be able to stay long but I'll be there and hopefully be able to exchange numbers with someone. Thanks!

Whoops, forgot to put that, 30-06

Oh boy that is way too small for bears, 300rum at the minimum...

I'll see what I can find from my 2013 tag packet. See you there.
-
Can envious "did not draw" folks come, too? :chuckle:
:brew:
-
I hope so...I'm going.
-
Hmmm also from lake stevens slightly older than you. Willing to help.

Lots of bears up off kellogg lake road out of Startup.
-
Nope....none there......never seen any! :chuckle:

They all moved out last year after the fire danger closure, a real bummer....
-
Yep. For sure. Those that are new and rew monroe do a search on here for "flamingo". I use them as decoys in that general area and have a few bears on cam.
-
Nice to meet you guys!
-
Flamingos! Hahahaha amazing !

If you are behind the gates during bear season, they don't want you shooting coyotes. I got scolded for that. Stupid, but the way it is I guess.... FYI If you walk in, I think you are fine whacking the coyotes. :dunno:

I hope Buckmark is joking because that is the worst advice I think someone could give you. Your 30-06 with a 150 grain bullet is more than capable of killing any animal in this state. Shot placement is the key, so please don't listen to advice that suggests that you should get a larger caliber versus focusing on shot placement. It has been my experience that many hunters compensate with larger or magnum calibers when they don't spend the time shooting to focus on accuracy. :twocents:

Will do!

Its a fun tag to have Molon, you'll love it.
One of my best tips...
leave time to swing by the Alpine Drive In just outside of sultan for a burger and shake after a hard day chasin Yogi. Gotta keep up your strength.

I am also in lake Stevens. I'll be chasing Kokanee this spring instead of bears but can help with some info from having the tag two years along with packing help if needed.
Best advise I have is hunt as much as possible. When you find sign check the areas often to find where it is an active area. When you find somewhere with new sign in the area every time you go back concentrate on those spots. Grass along roads early then peels the second half of the season.
my spring bears belly was full of bark and cambium. I caught him in the salmon berry bushes digging in the dirt on the side of a road near an area where new peels were showing every other day.
Also be prepared to take a second shot if possible when it goes down. They are damn tough animals. I lost one that haunts me still because I possibly could have gotten a second shot off but didn't. Not proud of that at all. Horrible feeling.
Let me know if you want help on some areas to check out. Note in the second pic the light spots on the bear. They are mosquitos! Bring a thermacell and repellant. I had both and it was still miserable gutting and loading him up!
-
I'm in Monroe so if anyone needs help on a pack out let me know. Be gone Turkey hunting the first week of May, so any other time I'm available if I'm not at work demoing people's houses.
-
I've had this tag also so if anyone wants any info, PM me your # and I will give you a call. I will also meet up and hunt with someone if they want some company and or help packing out. I drew 49 Deg N so I will be heading over there Memorial day weekend and other weekend's the end of may/ beginning of June.
-
Have you made it out at all ? Having any luck locating bears?
-
I was able to get out behind a few gates yesterday for a few hours but it was miserable out and i stayed in the truck for the most part. Found some areas with old peels. Areas that look like they would be really good for deer season. Keep in mind I'm new to bear so I don't really know what kind of area I should be looking for. I found some areas where i would try to call coyotes so i assume this area could work for calling bear too.
-
I'd be happy to help you. I've had this tag twice. Save you vacation and efforts for later in the season, but early season is fun for exploring and looking for sign.
PM Incoming

Cruised a bit in the Monroe unit. No bears on cams, minimal to no activity on the bait barrels, no fresh peels spotted. Lots of nice fresh grass..only a matter of time fellas.

I might get out soon for a look, but right now I'm addicted to Koke on Lake Stevens.
-
Well, i got a bear down last night. They sure do look bigger than they are, aren't they
-
Let us be the judge of that! Pics! And congrats, not a super easy tag to fill, especially this early in the hunt.

Congrats!

Honestly, I'm kind of embarrassed to post pics. With 4 inches of fur on the back, and 4 inches of fur on the belly, and 4 more inches of fur on the sides, bear size it very deceiving. Initially I didn't take the shot. Then she went off into the woods a little bit. Then I talked myself into feeling alright taking a smaller bear considering all the other things I have going on during this hunt, and the "oh, what if i don't find another one" was playing in my head. When she came back I procrastinated a few more minutes before taking her and when I walked up to her I was quite disappointed. I don't want to sound ungrateful, but I can't help but think I really should have stuck to my first gut reaction which was to let this one go. No doubt she'll be fine eating and her fur will look good on my wall, or whatever I do with it.
-
 never be disappointed be proud of any animals taken sometimes smaller bears look better on the wall
Post some pics so we can enjoy!!!
-
I ALWAYS like looking at bear pics. Post it up👍

Well it's bear and you had a bear tag congrats, my first bear was small and I did a shoulder mount and it looks good.
-
Congrats. My first bear was around 120lbs or so. Pretty much any bear in the spring is good. The sows with the little cubs are the no go's for me. Unless they are going to mob me. Which was close on my last spring bear hunt. They are to little to make it on there own.
-
That's a D-Rock size bear everyday of the week. Congrats
-
Nothing wrong with that bear....thanks for posting. My first was a small bear too so I did a full mount and it is awesome!!
-
Awsome. Thanks for sharing!
-
Thanks posting. Yep, that's a small bear but you got it done. Congrats.
-
Congratulations, I didn't see anything but a coyote when I had that tag a couple of years ago.
-
Congratulations!
-
Nothing wrong with that!

Congrats on your bear
-
Congratulations on the bear. I definitely shot my Monroe bear based on the thought process of "its a bear, its standing broadside, its in range, boom, I wonder how big it is."
-
That's a great bear. Most if not all of the shi5t talkers haven't even killed a bear.
Nice work filling your tag.

I fell into the same line of thinking last deer season. It was my first season hunting deer, and the first two weeks I had a couple of 100% shots on younger deer. One being a yearling, and the other a fawn(Which I don't regret at all). I remember thinking "Man, theres no way I can take this deer. Its too young. I'll just pass on this one and I've seen so many, getting another shot will be easy!" Needless to say I was empty handed at the end of the season, and I kept thinking back to that yearling I passed up.
Moral of the story - and I think this especially applies to people who are new to hunting - if its legal, safe, and ethical, take the shot. Don't pass up an animal you would shoot on the last day of the season.

The majority of people in this unit will not fill their Spring tags. Congrats!
DRock has shot a few bears and I have shot a few that he claimed :chuckle:, but he would shoot this in a heartbeat. I think its because he feels powerful being able to pack it out all by himself.
But seriously nice work. Buy another tag and whack one in the late summer/fall.
-
Congrats on the bear. I'm sure I would have made the same decision you did. I had the tag last year and was never able to get a shot off at one.
