I drew a fall archery bear tag with the option to bait. Does anybody know anything about this area???

How many tags were there? If there are many tags you may need to pack in to escape competition. You can drive to the edge of the area.

This past Fall I hunted for elk just north of the roadless border and there's plenty of places to access it from the north side, but it looked like quite a steep hike down into the roadless area and a brutal hike back out if you bag a bear.

There were 5 resident and 1 nonresident drawn.

Thanks. I actually needed that clarification. I know there is a south entrance that includes a hike through the lands of first peoples and i knew there was a north entrance and i knew that one of them has a steep elevation gain on the hike out. Did you see much bear sign where you hunted?

With that few of permits I would think you should be able to bait from an access point along the fringe successfully since there shouldn't be too much baiting competition.

It should be over the counter but if not, it sure would be nice if they had baiting permits in Wa. Good luck on your hunt, that sounds like quite the adventure. Lots of Pics please!

I didn't see any bears in there, but I did talk to some of the hound hunters while scouting and supposedly there are a lot of bears.
-
There are bear all through the Book Cliffs. I don't think there are as many as in WA but by Utah standards there are a lot of bear and some pretty good ones. I'm not up the speed on Utah baiting laws but if you can legally get a bait in there in advance and rebait it once a week for a few weeks that is what you should try to do. Hopefully you have friends or family in Utah.

If the info i have is correct then this is the second or third season that utah has allowed limited baiting in some units and on some hunts. This is one of them. I can begin baiting two weeks prior but a trip to yellowstone will delay that by a week. Thanks for the advice about hunting the fringe. However the border of the unit has a few hunters with a similar tag. Still a good suggestion.

Unfortunately without horses you probably won't be baiting too deeply into the unit. I would call the DWR bio for the area and ask where the highest concentration of bear is at.

There will be no more to this story as i am busy scouting for an idaho moose tag i drew.

Sounds like a great problem to have

There will be plenty of gut piles left from the elk hunters. You wont make it in without horses. The trials are pretty rough in a couple of spots, especially from the North side off of Diamond ridge. This is some pretty serious country. Beautiful place.

My family has seen bears on every horse ride in there this year.
This last week my brother saw a real big one down Went ridge.
Plenty of bear. Really long hike. beautiful country.

I wish it was over the counter. I would get a bear every year.

Nice work! Way better than a bear.
