it never lets me down.

So second on my list is my Primos "Wet Box" followed by an old Lynch.

NWTF....what Quaker Boy call was it. I have a box full of unopened Quaker Boy calls from years ago. Might have one.

Post by: Machias on January 30, 2009, 10:21:06 AM: I have about 10 calls, sometimes I use three or four at the same time...errr at one sitting I should say, :) One of my favorite calls later in the season after everyone has been running around calling loudly and cuttin up a storm is a little skoal can, slate call my great grandpa made me with a corn cob stricker. Very sweet, soft purrs and clucks, like a real hen. It has been the death or many longbeards that come slippin in silently. 8)

It produces very sweet yelps, purrs and clucks and has worked really well when a bird is in close and I am calling for a friend. Have had toms spitting and druming within 25 yards! Call is purpleheart wood and is very handsomely done. Not sure if they are still being made?

Post by: Tom Tamer on January 31, 2009, 07:37:35 PM: Various mouth calls made by a former NWTF'er that kind of went AWOL then I have a purpleheart Glass on glass made by Backwoods Calls that when you strike a note that causes the call to reverberate it just drive most any gobbler over the top.

They went south on me but mouth calls made by Eddie Salter were really the best I'd found. Iam looking for some out of the ordinary( for around here) mouth calls and possibly any local guys to try. I'm hoping to equip my vest with calls all made here in Washington

Phantom, they actually are shut down, i know both of the owners real well and niether have the time with jobs and family to pursue the business. But Shannon told me that if you do have any problems with their calls, broken surface or anything they will still fix them. It's a shame I thought and think they are pretty good calls and I believe they had M.D. Johnson helping them around the conutry to get some interest going. Hopefully in the future they'll come back

Does anyone have a specific recommendation on a custom wood slate call. I am looking to upgrade my H.S. Strut Li'l Deuce.

Also is it worth carrying a crystal friction call?

Post by: hornhunter on February 05, 2009, 06:50:26 PM: I have a Primos heartbreaker. It is hands down my favorite call. I can broadcast far away or I can call softly. I purrs very nice as well. I have used 5 different calls before using that thing an BOOM off in the distance GOBBLE GOBBLE. It has closed more deals than any other call I have. The freak frictionite call pures like magic, those to at the same time are an awesome pair. Of course I have that mouth call in at the same time, double reeds sound the most consistant after multiple uses in my experience.

Least favorite call ANY mouth call made with plastic >:( instead of aluminum.

I ended up with a Williams Customer Call, slate over glass, in spalted red elm. These calls are great sounding and great looking!

They are worth a look for anyone interested in a custom call at a reasonable price.

Alex Wiliams is a known call maker in GA.

Anyone else have one of his calls?

Post by: Phantom Gobbler on February 15, 2009, 09:44:18 PM: I am really impressed by the WCC slate call I received, so I have ordered a second custom call from Alex. The new call will be a bronze glass over glass friction call made out of wild cherry burl wood. The call will be finished later this month, as Alex is going to have a booth at the NWTF National Convention this month in Nashville. You can see some examples of this call and the awesome WCB wood on this website. It takes over a year to season (dry) the wild cherry burl cut blocks.

For friction I use a primos double sided box or one of their slate or aluminum pot calls. Looking to upgrade there too eventually.

I think I need a tudor to teach me how to use a mouth call. :dunno: Can't seem to get clucks, raspy yelps and kee kees down! :'(

Some guys have them Mick Jaggar lips and can purr till there is no tommorrow...others smoke and don't have the lung pressure to do a series of cutting..Again I know hunters that think they are cutting and they are putting...LOL. 90% of calling is calling it is what to say when..75% of the time I can tell a hunter from a hen. The other 25% is disbelief. Those hens sound real good or real bad.
