Picked up a few bear calls and a howler from Rick and spent part of the day picking his brain and him showing me the ropes. I didn't see any bears but got a few spots picked out for next weekend. Can't wait to get out there again. Thanks again TomT and Rick.

Nice meeting you today Bearman over on the 6006.

DuckSlayer it seems that someone shot a bear on opening day and was unable to recover it. It was found today by a brush picker and they reported it. To bad because it was a big boar and with the warm weather it was already spoiled. :(

Oh man that's too bad. I found a dead coyote today it was realllly stinking with this heat.

Post by: Caretaker on April 24, 2016, 12:03:44 AM: Stayed Friday night in Copalis behind the gates, called 4 different spots and nothing showed up but a few ducks circling around us like I was bait. Saw a coyote twinkle toed his way around our camp around 5am, I should of shot him but didn't want to scare any bears in the area so I gave him a pass. Started to downpour on us about 4:30 so we called it a day.

Post by: XJcoug13 on May 21, 2016, 10:09:39 PM: Connected with a big bear today around 1pm.. spent the last 7 hours looking for it in the thickest, nastiest, stuff I've ever tracked an animal in. It was about to head down a ridge and out of sight when i squeezed a shot off. No blood and the only thing found was some hair where it was shot. There was 4 of us looking and we couldn't find it, it might have ran over some blow downs and into some 7-10 year old reprod. I'll be back up there tomorrow in the same spot, checking again. :( :dunno:

Did you find any blood at all? Could have been a complete miss?

I would take a dog for a walk.
Not saying I would use it to find the bear or anything like that of course.

Post by: XJcoug13 on May 25, 2016, 07:17:56 PM: Copalis spring bear! I put in some time this year, I had this tag last year and didn't do it any justice. This was probably my 12th or 13th day in the woods for spring bear and I made it count. Spotted this bear from about 3/4 to a mile away and got in front of him and was able to get within 120 yards, he gave me the perfect shot, and I took it. He went 30 yards at most before hitting the dirt. As we were gutting him out there was another decent sized bear watching us at 50 yards!! This bear measured 6 foot, and was 300 pounds.
Also I sighted my gun in about 3 hours before I harvested this bear and I'm glad I did. I was all over the paper, so reference the bear that I was looking for a few days ago, he's still fat, happy, and alive.. I guarantee it! Good luck guys.

FWIW, depending on how close you were to your calling stand when you shot, the bear may have been moving because of your call. If he was within sound range, even extreme sound range, it is likely that the sound influenced him. I've killed several critters or run into them when walking quite a ways back to my vehicle after calling, including bears. Most of them were responding/reacting to the call in some way but staying far from it (as evidenced by tracks in snow, etc.)

Good on you however it came together!
