Title: 7 point dilemma
Post by: ffbowhunter on April 14, 2016, 08:26:06 PM
So I have 7 quality bull points. I'm so torn on what route to take. I'm torn between Presscot or Teanaway tag or just putting in for the observatory with a better chance at getting drawing.  I know all the areas well so finding animals shouldn't be an issue.  What are your thoughts?

With 7 points you shouldn't have to worry.

I don't mean to be disrespectful and I hope you draw. With that said, I have almost triple the points you do and I'm still waiting.

Anyone can draw with The Wa draw system.

I'd pick the unit based on my age. If you have a few years of hunting left, draw an easier tag and go fill it.

I have plenty of years left. I was leaning towards the easier draw.

I assume you're talking Archery. I'd pick one of the harder to get tags as my first choice and the better odds tag as my second. Hope for the best, expect the worst. Good luck!

i say go for whatever tag you want anything possible im going with 11 though

I say put In for the units you think have trophy potential. You'll never draw an elite unit if you don't put in for it.

what weapon ? With seven Id not put in for archery 340 .

I drew one of the best tags with 6 points, my brother drew with only 3, and we drew great tags last year as partners. At minimum your first choice should be a Hail Mary, and if you are satisfied with a unit that's not quite top tier then put that as second choice. Good luck

This is data from the 2014 permit drawings for Quality elk. As an example, hunt 2021 was Teanaway / Modern Firearm. There were 3 permits and 582 applications. Here's a distribution of drawing results by point levels:

The prescott units quality has gone down the toilet.. I use to see a lot of big bulls and the last couple years havnt. The amount of big bull tags they give for the unit has really knocked down the age of bulls there.

No way would I do Prescott with an archery tag, unless you like hunting in a jungle.  I don't know what quality was like in the past in that unit, but I know there's one less quality bull running around this year then there was last year.   ;)

If want a decent bull hunt observatory would almost be a slam dunk to draw with seven points and you can hunt 342 and not have much company . the northern units you want will still be fair at best to draw , like one guy said hail mary number one and take a hunt you would be happy with on second choice.

it would be VERY interesting to hunt that unit with a bow!   :yike:  that said, i do know a guy that shot a 220" bull at 20 yards in that unit.  with a .300 RUM  :o :chuckle:

Archery in the Observatory is a complete ZOO!!!!!! was in there last year for 5 days and ran in to more people then any animals.  They need to cut that tag allotment in half .

Put in for whatever.  I am at 15, I would go for the easy tag if I was you vs. blowing another 8 years like I have.

The number of points awarded is left to the discretion of the officer, IIRC.  The max is ten, but they can and will award fewer.

Three pled guilty. The fourth just took a plea last month. And this was almost two seasons ago. So hopefully they give me another ten to add to the 30 they allready have me

What tag can you still not draw with that many points?! Lol
Title: Re: 7 point dilemma

The colockum tag/s draw odd percentages are usually much lower than most eastern archery units. You probably won't break 5% with the teanaway tag, however the prescott tag might be a different story. The point pool for prescott is extremely low but on the same hand 1 tag. Both won't be a for sure even with 25 points. You'll probably be pushing 35% for observatory since it has one of the highest draw odds out of all quality archery tags given. This means it entirely boils down to how much you want a tag this year. If you do put in for yakima herd units if you want a more exclusive tag hold out for blues or colockum.

He's probably putting in for rifle Jeff. Let them waist their points away. Its pretty damn futile.

:yeah: hahahaha im right there with you. 17 points for Moose, Goat, and Sheep. Still holding out hope one of my dreams may come true this year. Sheep is my grail, with moose not too far behind. I would be totally stoked for any of the OIL tags, in any unit.

Perhaps we should buy the losers lounge.  Probably make enough money we can go to Canada and fill those dreams.  Maybe even give Casey Brooks a run for his money in Washington. :chuckle:
