So with max points, figure I'm guaranteed to draw a permit this year.......... :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
Anyhoo, My 1st 3 picks are units that I know well and live by, but never know what to do for the 4th pick.
I'm not getting any younger and have bad knees, I can still hike pretty good, but I'm not a mountain goat anymore :'( Also not looking to kill the biggest/badest ram, just an decent mature one.
Of the 3 Yakima area units, Cleman, Selah, and Umtanum....(I know nothing about them)
1. Which one has the most difficult hunting terrain? (access & steepness)
2. Which one is the least difficult?
Posts or PM's are both welcomed
Thanks all. NOCK

If you put in for clemans and draw, you can leave your rig at the bottom and I will drive you to the top :chuckle: .
It really depends where the sheep are at the day (s) you are hunting for clemans.
-
So is it pretty rugged terrain?
-
Of those three I'd say they're all about the same as far as terrain and difficulty to hunt. Of course I've only hunted sheep in Cleman but I know a little about the other two. Umtanum can require you to cross the river in a raft or small boat. Or you can come in from the other side by driving in but I believe in that case you will need to hike further. I believe Selah could possibly be the most difficult simply because private property makes access more difficult, unless you pay the landowner.
-
Thanks Bobcat
-
I agree, the terrian is very similar in all of those units, close your eyes, pick one and put in.

Hi bobcat, Do you happen to know what the landowners charge for crossing their properties in the Selah?
-
No, I don't. At one time I was told but I can't remember. But it was quite high. I'm thinking well over $1000. But I'm sure someone on here will know the answer to that.
-
Yipes! Thanks bobcat.

My dad drew selah in 2009 and paid the guy $500. I have also heard it has jumped way up since then.

I'd do clemans with bad knees... Clemons is great because you can have an awesome hardcore sheep hunt in some ridiculous terrain or you can shoot one from the highway. I drive by the Clemons sheep every day heading towards town... I promise you, if you are a decent shot, with that long season you would not go without a ram if drawn, even with bad knees.
-
Clemans it was. Not sure why I cared...........gonna get drawn for Swakane this year! ;) :chuckle:
-
Your dreamin!!! You cant draw a moose tag last year and expect a sheep tag this !!LOL

Hey Killmore...it does happen. I drew sheep in 2014 and moose last year. I did have max points for both though and I'm hoping to finish up with goat this year...Keep after it!

FYI the best sheep area is the one you draw..

Looking to get lucky with a sheep tag and complete the hat trick👊💥👊

Looking to complete the trio myself:
MOOSE; 1996 2 points
GOAT; 2015 16 points
SHEEP 17 points

Hey Chris (nock nock). I'm surprised you don't have the Quilomene on your short list. You can make this hunt into whatever you want. Lots of places to drop off the roads above and hike down into the cliffs or if your not physically able to do that, the sheep are very acessable from the river after a short boat ride from Crescent Bar. The quality of Rams is definitely not on par with Manson or Swakane but when I drew there were 4 tags available so the odds were way higher of just getting a tag.

Hey Jerry, Quilomene is always in the top 3  Are you putting in for the antlerless permits now. :chuckle: Did you see they changed the wording?  :IBCOOL:
-
I saw that they changed the wording. I read it just like you and thought I was unable to apply since I had harvested a ram. I will probably apply this year. Sucks that I missed out on about 7 years of applying but oh well.

Reaper,
I really hope you draw at least 1 OIL permit. You probably have more years ahead than me. :yike:
You will get it done
-
Falcon, that picture looks familiar. I just put in for Swakane and Chelan Butte, not holding my breath even with 20 pts. but I am heading to Wyoming for elk in October!

I actually believe it has been a blessing not to draw yet. Ten years ago I may not have given a tag its due worth. Now Im older and see things in a different way. I think I could do any of the tags justice. Im also looking forward to sharing an OIL hunt with my kid. He's old enough to tag along on any of the hunts now. A few years ago it would of been a struggle. Everything happens for a reason, Im just enjoying the anticipation of the ride.

Tom,
It was awesome having you on that hunt. Good luck on the sheep and other draws. Would love to return the favor someday

Wonder what the average age is of those who draw moose and/or sheep? When I drew moose 2 years ago I was 49. Seems that a lot of permits go to us older dudes :dunno: who have been putting in since forever. :chuckle:

Get that goat before you are 45 and say " mission completed"

I drew my ram tag in 2014 at 56 after putting in for 42 years. I drew my any moose last year at 57 after putting in for 38 years. I was lucky and drew/harvested goats in 1972 at 14, 1986, and 1996 (the year before they became OIL). I sure would like to draw my last goat tag before too long! Then I guess it'll be ewe and cow moose time.........or maybe some lucky raffles....😄
