Last year, one of the harvested goats from Washington’s District 10 tested positive for Movi. In hopes that this was nothing more than a false positive, the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife will closely monitor this otherwise healthy herd of over 300 animals. Goat Rocks is currently the second largest hunted population of mountain goats in the state of Washington.
On July 15-17, the Rocky Mountain Goat Alliance will head out on part of the Pacific Crest Trail outside of Packwood, Washington to survey the resident herd. We will be conducting a population analysis as well as monitoring for symptoms that may indicate Movi infection. This includes coughing, sneezing and overall ill animals. We are currently recruiting volunteers for this project and need as much help as we can get.
A secondary survey is scheduled for September 9-11 to analyze kid survival rates during the first 3-months of life. The data collected will be used in comparison of the July survey’s data to determine survival rate of this year’s kids.

All able-hikers welcome! Please come prepared with proper backcountry camping gear including good boots, water filtration systems, food, optics, GPS and cameras if you have them. Help us spread the word and share this project with anyone and everyone who may able to assist. The plan right now is for volunteers to rendezvous in the town of Packwood the morning of July 15th and September 9th. We may have horseback support from the area's outfitter, but plan on being self-propelled.

Why schedule the 2nd survey for opening weekend of archery elk witch is only 3 days before the goat hunt????
I saw this too, but wonder how the survey would really impact the area? are there many elk guys in there? the goats really don't care about people mostly so I don't think it would affect a hunter with rifle..
on the plus, maybe people still in there could help someone pack a critter out!

I drew this goat tag so I'm worried that people are gonna be messing with the goats.. I think that since it opens sept 1st maybe not a good idea to be around the goats..anybody worried about their goat hunts or elk hunts should relax. They're not going to change your success one bit. They are checking on goats to help future people do what you get to do this year.

Maybe you could use this to your benefit? Go along with the group and you could gain a huge amount of scouting info. ....or if your done scouting request that your in the group that goes to that area so you don't unexpectedly run into some over zelles goat watchers
Does seem Wweird to do it in September when alot of people are off hunting, is there a reason why it couldn't be moved to end of august?

This project is still a "Go". We have almost 20 people that are interested so far and could definitely use twice that many.
Please let me know if you are interested in helping. Name, cell number and e-mail. We are trying to get a good solid count of the goats in the range, but we (WDFW/RGMA/SCI) really want to key in on the number of kids in the entire Goat Rocks range.

I got a report from someone that was up on Snowgrass last weekend and there is still a lot of snowpack, but it's coming off quickly. We will try to scatter people around in different places, depending on their time and fitness constraints. Cispus, Snowgrass, Goat Lake, Warm Lake, McCall, Devil's Knob, Knife Edge...you get the idea.
Sorry I can't give more detailed information right this minute, but it's logistically impossible given some of the variables we are up against. Don't worry though, we're not going to spring the final plan on you last minute. Stay tuned!
BTW, I've got 15 or so people that have expressed interest, but more would be better given how much country we are trying to cover.

Seems like a lucrative way to get hours.

Reports from various people that have been in the area indicate that while there is still a lot of snow piled up in places, it’s coming off fast. Some of the attendees might want to consider bring ice-axes and crampons, but other than that we should be a go!
Thus far I have approximately 22 people that have expressed interest in helping and we could use some more. As Kent from White Pass Outfitters noted, we will have some horse packing support for at least a portion of the east side of the mountain range, perhaps more.

Since this is being co-sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Goat Alliance and the Seattle Puget Sound Chapter of SCI, it's important that you check both of those boxes under the “Volunteer Groups” section.
I will be personally calling everyone that has expressed interest thus far to get a feel for where we can best use their help (ie., fitness level, experience, equipment, preferred spotting buddy, etc.) and then setting up a roster for where each team will assigned on the mountain range.
