Title: Shrimp pots.... shrimp season upon us... where to buy
Post by: Whitpirate on May 02, 2016, 08:52:04 AM
Best place to pickup a couple of shrimp pots?  Finally got a puller for the boat so I'm willing to set 300' now :P

Tips/experience on best rigs appreciated.

Going to fish out of Everett or Camino

Hurry up and shop Craigslist, there are probably complete setups (pots, rope, bait cages) available right now. Seasoned (used) pots will likely fish better than brand new pots, especially this close to the season.

Bigger is better. Try and find a shrimp condo or two. The little ones wholesale has don't shrimp that well. Big bait canister areas means more bait= more scent.

Lots of weight also. I generally use 12-15 lb downrigger balls in my pots so they stick where you drop them. Drifting pots don't catch shrimp. Spend time using your sonar to find shrimp clouds. I generally find the clouds, drop the pot and watch the shrimp follow the pot down, pretty cool to watch. Then the pot comes up full first drop, generally 180-220 per pot, sometimes close to 300.

Oily bait is key. Salmon skin, tuna, mackerel , trout all do well. I have a custom mix that took a couple years to perfect.

Good luck, pot pullers are worth it and money well spent.

You could buy mine over on the classifieds.

Other than that, the only place I would go is John's in Everett.  They should have everything including maps and recipes for bait.  Best part is you support a local business and their prices beat Cabelas.
