Title: Weasel Family ID, just for fun......

You certainly may run into one or more of these fine critters while in the elk woods this fall.  Can you name them all?

You guys know your weasel family  ;).  From what I've studied, Ermines are merely weasels in their winter phase (pics two and eight).  If I'm wrong in my assumption, let me know.

Weasels (short tailed or long tailed) both have yellow bellies and brown backs in summer. Then they go completely white except for the tail tip which remains black. I have caught them in most areas of the state. Rare to see but they are almost everywhere.

Yes, I'm sure there may be other members of this handsome (weasel) family but I'm pretty sure they are not very common in the elk woods  ;)

Stoats are in the weasel family (Mustelidae), hyenas are the only members of their family Hyaenidae (three species of hyena plus aardwolf), mongoose are civets, Herpestidae, which are analogs of the Mustelidae in Africa and tropical Asia (if you believe in niche theory and convergent evolution ;) )
