Title: Brewester Pool Sockeye Closed This Year???
Post by: WCTaxidermy on May 19, 2016, 12:15:31 PM: Hey everyone, my brother sent me the new rules and regulations for the Columbia River Fisheries regulations for 2016-2017. It appears you can not retain any Sockeye this year from the bridge up to the dam. Unless I totally missed something, I really didn't see this coming at all!

I also heard a rumor that only 40k sockeye were expected back this year.

That was one of the reason I didn't buy a fishing license yet

Post by: DOUBLELUNG on May 19, 2016, 04:05:05 PM: It will all depend on the 2016 counts, it will not be open in the pamphlet but can still be opened under emergency regulations if returns are sufficient to meet escapement and water temperatures aren't too high.

Post by: skidynastar33 on May 21, 2016, 05:04:50 PM: It always opens only when there is 75000 through wells dam I believe. This run has nothing to do with last years run. It is mostly from 4 years ago with a few 3 and 5 year old fish. Only expected to get like 50000 this year so probably won't open.

Already well over half the total forecast run of 101,600 (vs. less than 10% of the 2015 run over BON by this date). Either the run is REALLY early, or much larger than predicted.

Found it, Sockeye are open for retention in the lower Columbia June 16 - July 31.

Summer Season* (June 16 –July 31 timeframe)

Summer Chinook and Sockeye
The area downstream of the Astoria-Megler Bridge is closed for salmon and steelhead during the June 16-July 31 period.
The area from the Astoria-Megler Bridge upstream to the OR/WA border (upstream of McNary Dam) is open June 16-July 31 for retention of: sockeye, adult hatchery Chinook, hatchery Chinook jacks, and hatchery steelhead. Closed for Coho.
The daily bag limit is two adult salmonids and five jacks. All sockeye are considered adults and must be recorded as adults on the combined angling tag.
All other permanent rules apply.

Post by: Ridgeratt on June 17, 2016, 08:08:39 PM: FISHING -- Sockeye salmon are surging into the Columbia River in record numbers, and that has fisheries biologists scratching their heads. Their forecast for this year is less than a fifth of last year's return.

"Will this year’s actual return beat the preseason forecast?" ponders Joe Hymer, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife salmon specialist in Vancouver. "Will we set a new record? Typical peak counts at Bonneville Dam are around July 1."

Through Monday, a total of 33,496 sockeye were counted at Bonneville Dam, the highest count through that date since at least 1938, Hymer said. The previous record was set last year with 24,728 fish by June 13.

The single-day counts at Bonneville Dam were: 8,764 sockeye on Monday; 6,660 on Sunday; 4,515 on Saturday; 3,411 on Friday; 2,112 on Thursday; and 1,648 on Wednesday.

Last year’s total return of 512,500 fish was the third largest run since at least 1938. The record is 648,361 fish in 2014.

The recent 10 year average through June 13 is 10,728 fish.

This year's pre-season forecast of just 101,600 sockeye to return to the mouth of the Columbia is below the recent 10-year average of 290,200 sockeye. That's not sensational, but the early returns are. So what's the deal?

No one knows for sure.

"Stay tuned," Hymer suggests.

By the way, future sockeye returns to the Columbia are even more questionable.

While last year’s sockeye returned in near-record numbers, about 250,000 perished because of the unusually low flows and warm water temperatures cause by a state-wide drought and extremely hot summer.

I'm pretty sure the BC indians have some sort of deal on their percentage of those sockeye too and with last year's poor survival rate back to Canada, am thinking that's the driving force why it's not scheduled to open July 1 with the Kings. So far, their predicted fish numbers aren't even in the ballpark. Good news for us fishermen.
