Title: Freindly contest???
Post by: Gutpile on February 02, 2009, 08:29:47 AM
A lot of other sites have contests for turkeys thought it'd be fun to have one here. Biggest (best score), smallest bird, longest/smallest beard, longest /shortest spurs, Best photo. Maybe even break it down into sub species. You can use the NWTF website to score the birds, so it makes it pretty easy. What do you guys think??

What kills me is the claim to have shot a big ol bird in the 20# catagory with no supporting evidence.....

Guys, prove it is all I say.

I shot 5 in that category!   I don't have pics though!  :dunno:  Sorry. Got a pic of a jake I shot once though.

Just kidding.

Just friendly contest for fun. But yes, I think pics should be mandatory.

Agreed, although I don't really have a good scale.  I weigh myself on my bathroom scale, then weigh myself holding the turkey.  Hope that will suffice.

I have accurate scales that we use at our turkey camp...we have kept records or all of the birds shot in camp for the last 6 years..we have nicknamed all of them to recall the hunts...we measure beard and spurs also..NWTF scoring.  If the bird is bigger than 22 we go to the store and weigh it on a certified scale.

When I was going to school at Wazzu I called one in for a buddy that weighed 23 lbs, it had a 11 3/4 beard, 1 1/2 spurs. He was a half pound from winning the contest Black Sheep puts on. They took all the measuments.

I usually dont have them weighed but I bet most of the mature toms we get are 16-18lbs.

I am game for contest this year. I think I will only get about 4-5 days hunting in though.

So, according to the NWTF calculator, my 2008 spring bird scored 61.5.  Is that good?  :dunno:

sounds like fun, we used to have a contest at work back in pennsylvania. we used the nwtf system. for scoring it usually took a monster to win it.

I have never used an actual score sheet until I saw that link. My last bird scores 63.75 I guess. I never knew. :dunno:

Does anyone know what a good score would be for a turkey in WA.

Anyone claiming a 20 + bird better be taking their butt to the local meat processor, grocery store or taxi man.
Most birds fall into the 16-18 catagory, with a few reaching 19 and fewer hitting 20.

I have taken many birds, and have had only 1 hit the 20 mark, he wieghed in at 20.4 and I thought I had a monster at the time... :chuckle:  was sure he was going to hit 22 23 lbs.... boy was I disapointed..

I really wish the NWTF would make it mandatory to have the weight certified before being accepted in their books.
Like Bone said........... lots of big bears get taken too

Just suggesting a friendly contest. What we could do is post pics of the beard and spurs next to a tape and just enter a predetermined weight for the score if you guys are really that concerned about it. It'd just be a fun way to have all of the harvest pics in the same place to look at as season progresses. Just like the Coyote Madness thread.

Not many people must be entering their birds. Looks like I should start.

I have a few that would have been right around 61-64.

I have written down on my biggest: 18lbs 6 oz, 1.25 spurs, 10.25 beard= 63.85. According to the books that would be like #5 in the state. Odd cause I see many killed where I go that big and bigger almost every year.

Thanks for the link.

I need to call mu buddy and tell him he really owes me for that bird a few years back. It would have scored right around 70-71. Near state record. We knew it was big never knew people kept score.

Realize the NWTF state chapter was relatively small and started collecting scores from turkey hunters...I haven't registered 15 of my birds, I got lazy I guess.  There is a form you can fill out and send in.  Contact a state chapter or local and aske them to get them for you.  There maybe nnew online form...NWTF HUNTER or turkeyhunter may know...Also back in the day they didn't require a fee to register.  I send my scores into this link to....

http://www.nwbiggame.com/scoresheets.cfm

Then you will be published if you get it in before next edition...Kind of Cool!  I made the first edition for Washington..I haven't seen the second edition yet...

Wouldnt it be too late for me now? Doesnt an official scorer have to see it? Weight it? measure it?

IF you register with NWTF WA they should be sending updates to NWBIGGAME for thier records...their requirement however was a min. 81/2 " beard.

your right second edition is already out..

http://wanwtf.com/documents/WA_Wild_Turkey_Record_Registration.pdf

Fill out and send to: WA State Chapter of NWTF, 3321 S Woodward, Spokane Valley, WA 99206

I mount 5-7 turkeys every year and the average weight is 19.5 lbs. I have to weigh them to get the right size bodies. These are mainly Merriams. The Rio's are typically smaller. I took a bird in last year that weighed right at 23 lbs. His crop was full of corn. LOL

The contest sounds like fun. Count me in.

One thing I did notice since moving here is that the turkeys seems to be much smaller.

VA turkeys seem almost a 1/3 bigger.   :dunno:

That's because you're comparing Virginia Easterns with Washington Merriam's and Rio's.  Easterns as a subspecies tend to be a little larger than Merriams and then down the scale to Rio's. :chuckle:

Watched a show last night and they were hunting easterns in Pennsylvania. These birds were approaching 30 lbs. They were huge.

Last summer I was in Connecticut visiting my sister and some of the birds that were coming into her back yard were enormous. I was drooling the whole time.

All of my weights I posted previously were the cooked weights...so are we supposed to weigh them before or after we eat them?   :chuckle: :chuckle:  Just for the record no stuffing was included in the final weight!  :chuckle:
