Title: Scouting questions from beginner
Post by: Soundbite on May 22, 2016, 09:10:47 PM
let me start by saying I know nothing. I recently read the "NO Bait just Bears" book and am excited to get out and spend some time in the woods. I would l Ike to practice a little calling before it is go time, my question is am I nuts? Are animals going to "learn" and become more weary of calling, should I just glass and hike? ANY ideas or suggestions would be great.

I'm really not a bear hunter but in all hunting you should have as many techniques as possible at your disposal. You never know which one will be the one that helps you fill your tag. Don't put all your eggs in one basket so to speak.  :twocents:

Not really a bear hunter either but if you are worried about scaring off what you are hunting or the bears learning that you are making the calls try practicing in a different area. As you get better at calling something in you can build you confidence a little before actually going out to hunt. Scout the area you want to hunt without making calls, learn the terrain and find out where the animals are hanging out. Learn their patterns. Hopefully you will spot a nice one you want to take and keep track of it.
Good luck!

I'd spend my time scouting and simply looking for bear or sign.  I would not call when scouting.  Check out the internet for recordings of different calls and practice that way, but I would not call if you're scouting.

Very first time I called, I knew nothing. I literally went from the store I bought the mouth call from, to the woods and called in a bobcat and yote.

Practice makes perfect.

Bears are all about food.  Find the food, find the bears.  Getting a tag on them is a whole other ballgame sometimes.  I look at bears as a learning experience, it's addicting.

 :yeah:

All about food with bear. Sure you could jump one in the brush. But you're better off finding what's ripe;  berries apples etc and frequently glassing those areas. Bear aren't all over the place so you want a vantage point where you can see lots of ground.

Same thing happened to me.  Pulled the call out of the package and started blowing on it.  Had a coyote just about run me over in less than a minute.
