Title: Vail questions
Post by: JeffRaines on May 28, 2016, 05:56:04 PM
Hey guys,

So after speaking with the wife about our finances and such I was given the go ahead to buy a vail permit for this year so I can get out and hunt a little closer to home... we have a child due in August which is what drove me to this decision. I figured if I could get some hunting in closer to the house I'd be able to get out more often than if I was driving an hour or more one way to get into hunting.

With that said, would any past permit holders(or current) give me some advice about the area in general? I shouldn't need to mention this, but I'm not asking for honey holes or gps coordinates to the nearest B&C buck. Aside from walking in to fish the Deschutes a few times I am completely unfamiliar with the area, and I won't be able to get in there until August 1st. As I'm going to be really limited on time, I'll likely be hunting all seasons so i have the most opportunity to get out(was drawn for multi-season).

Thanks guys.

What kind of hunting (road, spot and stalk, still hunting etc) do you prefer and what caliber of animal.  If you are just out for meat it should be a cake walk.  Either way, I live in the Vail/Rainier area, have the permit for the second year in a row and am willing to help you out.

I prefer still hunt/spot and stalk, and as far as caliber of animal - I'm primarily a meat hunter. I wouldn't mind a buck at all, but at the end of the day if all I got was a doe during archery I sure wouldn't go home crying.

How did you do last year in there?

I try to help at least a couple guy (or gals) get their deer every year if I can. I am at the fair with my cows the first weekend in August but after that I will be scouting as much as possible. There are a couple of newly logged units that have a ton of potential for still hunting the surrounding remaining timber and drainages.

You shouldn't have any problems finding deer and killing a spike
