i am thinking about getting a 17hmr for plinking and hunting varmint's. what do you think about them are they worth getting? are they good for varmints? are they a accurate gun any help will be a big help.
-
.17HMR is a fun round. Accurate as all hell. Great for ground squirrels and rabbits. I have a Marlin and will never get rid of it.
-
I have a savage with the bull-barrel and I just love it. It is a fast, accurate round to shoot. I would buy a .22 first, but if you already have a .22 go for it!
-
is it good for coyotes?
-
God Aweful expensive to shoot for what you get. Personally they don't do anything a 22 rimfire in either LR or Mag do. Plus you don't need a new cleaning rod and jags. Fun to have a new caliber, but if this is not just a novelty gun then I would get a 22. But if you want one then get one as they work great. Any excuse for a new gun is a good one.

Personal opinion? Too light for yotes.
-
:yeah:
-
I don't think it is too light for 'yotes as long as you keep your shots under 125 or so yards. They make a really good 20gr round that is made for coyotes.
-
I had a Marlin and sold it to a guy on here about a year ago. Wish I still had it... :'(
-
I recently shot a coyote with mine and it was basicly bang flop. That being said I will have to agree that its a little lite for coyotes. but if its what ya got and there's a coyote I'd give him one :twocents:My question is; is it to lite for bobcats? or coons?
-
?
-
thats my thoughts also but I havent yet killed a bobcat so I have no real data.
-
I would have no problem using it on a bobcat within 100 yards, Wish I had mine instead my 22-250 when I shot my cat.
Who knew he would get that close to you though. The .17 might have just pissed that big sucker off :chuckle:
-
I had one for a couple years then sold it. Kind of a novelty gun IMO. Super loud, tough to see your targets since the hole is so small. I had around $750 bucks wrapped up in it all said and done. I don't really have a desire for another one, I might change my mind when my kid needs a plinker. I honestly have more fun with my .22 mag.

my thoughts too, if i want to pull the trigger on an animal. I also want it to die rather quick and proper.
-
I believe that the .22 mag is a far superior hunting round. But the .17 HMR is better for targets. Both are too expensive to plink with though. :twocents:

I had one...sold it to fund another project.
Getting ready to list about 5 boxes of ammo and a boresnake.
Good cartridge...picks up out where 22lr leaves off.
Very accurate.

I've used my 17hmr on coons, works just fine. Have yet to shoot a Yote or a Bobcat with it, but have shot a couple of oversized Feral Cats, and it was a bang flop situation with those guys, and a couple of them were pushing over 20lbs, so I thinkit will work fine on a Bobcat.

i got a savage 17hmr. it's so nice. with the accutrigger and i put a simmons 3-9x32 it's a sweet set up for varmits. i will be doing a bunch of varmit hunting with it this year. i would get a savage. i have 2 savage's with teh accutrigger and it's totally worth it.
-
Well the only thing I have shoot with my savage 17hmr was a rabbit at around 50 yrds and it blew its stomach all over the road. :yike:
-
yeah see they do work.
i am planning to get out and do some shooting this weekend with it though. and my 7mm-08 with accutrigger also. they are nice guns.
i think i have only put 50 rounds throught the barrell.
-
i had one but traded it for tires that i needed for my toy. they are real fun guns and very accurate. i had a savage synthetic stock with the BSA sweet 17 scope on it. i could hit about anything i wanted to up to 250 yards. fun gun
-
yeah great guns.
