Dream come true and I'm not even the hunter.
-
Don't forget those big bulls have real tough meat. I have one of the late tags so if that's all that left so be it! Good luck and keep me in the loop for intel.
-
I know those big Bulls can be tough, but once in a lifetime, may have to use the pressure cooker.

Mine was very tough(and it was not a big bull), ended up turning 80% into burger, jerky, and pep stick.
Have fun blindluck, your turn is coming.

Nope, the work starts after you shoot them! :chuckle:

Come on Bro. That meat isn't that tough :chuckle:

No truer statement than that! My $0.02 would be to get a good pack. I put my Exo 5500 to the test last year on my bull and it made a huge difference from what it would have been with my last meat hauler. Also, watch a few videos on gutless methods and have plenty of meat sacks and rope with you. When you're solo with a big animal on the ground you'll thank yourself.
-
Way easier to just drag them out whole with a 4 Wheeler. ;). Some sick part of me hopes we get to pack one out in Maine this year though.
I will say that even with the 4 Wheeler last year it was pretty difficult in some spots and I really didn't know if it was going to work.

Best way is to load them in the truck whole.

we' re pretty excited, I do feel pretty prepared, dad killed a moose in 2005, we handled him no problem, I'm a bow hunter and usually bone out my deer and pack them out, got a couple packs and I'm pretty versed at skinning boneing my elk and deer out on the ground and packing back to camp, dealing with the animal shouldn't be a problem just finding a good trophy will be the challenge. 3 1/2 months to go.

I hope so, I talked to you at elk camp a couple years ago just before your moose hunt, congrats to you hunt of a lifetime.

Break out the pressure cooker....good choice.
Please, lots of pics!

benhuntin, the best way to get them in the truck is to have you there to pack it. Your still my favorite forum member! :)
-
Mine was so tough, I boiled my boots and ate them :yike: through the moose out :violent1: just kidding did just grind it all up though, great flavor just tough as nails! (Do not pass up Dirty Shirt out of Usk)
-
Tough meat equals burger, Moose burger has got to be the best burger out there.
-
Not all moose meat is tough. I'd recommend trying some steaks before deciding to turn everything into hamburg. Meat care, cutting, and cooking can all play large roles in the toughness or lack there of.
-
absolutely, got to eat some before you know if it's Tough or not.my dad's 2005 bull was great, my step brothers bull was tough, both shot in Aladdin. I thinking 49 bulls are naturally juicier.
-
Toughness depends on the particular animal. Moose is my favorite meat even if it has to be ground into burger! Good luck with your hunt, that is a good unit.
-
I shot a 4 year old moose in Wyoming last fall, and the only thing that wasn't tough about it was the gravy. But if you have a grinder and cuber, you are going to love it.
-
That is awesome, you guys are gonna have an awesome season, does it always snow for that season? That's would make it awesome, I love huntn in the snow
-
I think typically it's pretty mild, When I used to hunt whitetail in November it would get cold and snow.
-
Should be easy to fill both tags in 49. Lots of moose. Good luck
-
My wife uses a LOT of ground meat and I will grind whole animals into burger. Doesn't bother me one bit. We use steaks, roasts and chops too, but my wife is a heck of a cook and she makes meals from ground meat that the little Hasty chillens and I look forward to.
I have had people try to trade me shoulders, necks & haunches for chops and rib roasts... but I know how my meat has been handled and won't do it.

We have one tag in 49 any moose early season and one of our handicap buddies drew disabled cow in Aladdin. should be a blast.
-
Been on two different hunts with buddies that have drawn that tag, enjoy every bit of the experience. Moose meat is the Best.
-
I just wanted to thank all the members who have given some very good advice to help with this once in a lifetime adventure. The scouting has begun, 5 more days and it's on!!!

Enjoy the moment blindluck, they are so much fun to hunt. Good luck.

Update please
-
Not seeing much, couple small Bulls, been tough, we'll keep at it. Reception is very spotty.
-
Look up Grouse Creek if you haven't already.
-
Thank you, been covering a lot of ground looking for sign not a whole lot of movement thanks to all for all the good tips will check back with you soon.
-
The moose tend to show themselves more on cloudy days, so the weather is looking better for moose hunting. Keep covering the ground and you'll find them. North Fork of Calispell Creek and Winchester Creek are good places to look too.
-
If you see any thinning operations look for fresh cuts and piles. They love to eat the tops of trees just fallen. Rut should be starting anytime and with some weather/barometer change it should be getting good soon. Winchester and front side of Calispell peak have always been good to me.

Well damn. Early *censored*s :P

We saw more when we cow called and grunted. Get up high on calispell and try calling down over the valleys. Worked great for me.

plowed mine back in '06 off winchester creek road at around MP 13 opening evening. he was following 2 cows. 4 1/2 years old and had a 43 1/2" spread. good enough for me and was the best eating animal i've shot--not tough at all
-
Goodluck
-
ok blindluck keep my dad calm so he can shoot strait when you guys get that trophy bull in front of him.i wish i could be there to see the old man get his moose but i know you'll get it all on video you better get it on video
-
Lingking, we are giving it a heck of a go. Not finding much, we ve been calling and covering most of the areas recommend, it's not over yet. But it's been tough.
-
They'll open up for you shortly. Most are cowed up, and they'll spend a couple days with them. They won't talk much. As soon as they've done their thing they'll be back on the beat. Patience! Rut isn't near over. Just a cycle.
-
Blindluck I sent you a PM.
-
Good luck guy, get r dun!
-
Persistence will pay off. It will happen for you guys when ya least expect it. Even though its stressful, enjoy every minute of it before you join all of us in the former moose tag holders club. :chuckle:

Update, my time with the hunter is over but my dad and John the hunter are staying at it. While I'm back home on the west side and back to work they will hopefully give me updates. On a regular basis. Again thanks to all the members who gave us advice, the last moose spotted was two days ago a small bull running down the road into the thick stuff. I know it will happen but it was not at all what I expected, rain and wind the last two days I think is keeping them held up as well. See ya soon, fingers crossed! Blindluck

well, after 16 days the first 6 pre season scouting John decided to take the next moose that presented a shot. It was challenging but exciting. We met some great fellow moose hunters and learned some new areas. We especially want to thank cascade and wazzu99 who kept us informed when there were moose sightings. In the end the snow flew and a nice cow hit the ground.
-
Looks like some dang good eating right there. Congrats
-
Very nice!
-
Happy for John.
He hit it hard, and is happy with the outcome.
-
I'm proud, my dad and him took pictures and video then had it skinned quartered bagged and headed back to camp in 3 hours. Not bad for a couple of 72 year olds!
-
Right on! Congratulations John! You earned it. So glad we were able to meet you guys.

Good stuff right there, congrats. I hope I'm still hunting hard at 72 years young. Blindluck you and your crew are welcome at our camp anytime! Had a blast trying to get them on a bull, just wish we could have been there with them.

Good for him. He'll enjoy it. Best part of a moose is the tableware.
