My favorite bullet for elk is the Barnes, and go lighter than normal.
(270 - 130 grain, 7mm Mag - 140 grain, 30/06 - 150 grain, 300 Mag - 168, etc.)

Oh, sorry, I didn't even notice it was in the muzzleloader forum. I'd still go with Barnes. I'm using the 290 grain TEZ in my CVA Optima.

I buy my bullets from TRACK OF THE WOLF .com. I shoot the 54. Cal 430 grn conicals. They are whole lot cheaper than getting name brand. And I've taken both deer and elk with them with great results.

I used 2 Barnes TEZ  290 grain copper bullets to kill my 4x6 bull last year. The bullets performed exactly as they are advertized. The first one dropped him. He didn't get back up.  That's what I will shoot again.

Haha I was JK because a lot of people are pretty passionate on choice of bullets and stuff and you asked if it made a difference. I think it makes a difference myself but I wouldn't have as much experience as someone like sabot loader with muzzy bullets!

I shoot the Barnes 290 TMZ.  My elk just rolled over, dead, when I shot it.  These are a little tight in some rifles

I shoot both each year in a couple different smoke poles. Both will be fine choice on elk. The tmz do load hard but tend to shoot a little better in my 4 guns.

TEZ uses a slightly smaller diameter sabot, so they load easy. (EZ)

we have been shooting the Speer Deep curl in a MMP sabot since 2011 in our group with amazing reaults.  Somewhere between 30-35 animas taken with them in that time.  They are getting hard to come by so last year we played with the xtp- mag in the same MMP sabot and they shoot identical, and performance on game was just as devistating. Have only recovered a few of the deepcurl bullets but the few that we have have all been 90%+ weight retention and mushroomed perfectly

Got the TEZ for easier loading - but could not get them down the barrel of my Vortex.   Literally beat on it to seat it so I could clear the barrel.  :dunno: :dunno:  This was with a clean barrel.

Had to switch to Powerbelt platinums which went in fine.

Yes, the options for the .54 in full length conical are definitely narrower than they used to be.  a few options with Sabot, but still slim pickens

I purchased the Barnes TEZ in 290 gr. 120 gr of 777 ffg. Sited in at 80 yds 14" of drop at 200 yds. Don't think I would shoot much more than 200 yds with open sites.

Once I have it dialed in and I'm satisfied it's on at 100 yds I will put a scope on it to get the best numbers on bullet drop.
Title: Re: Elk bullets
Post by: PA BEN on June 26, 2016, 07:52:20 AM
This is open sites the cross tape on the bottom of the orange target is where I center my front site. The taped hole there is from 80 yds, then I taped the top of the paper and centered on it at 200 yds. I didn't have a ruler but it's in the 14" range. BTW, my front site covered the paper side to side but I could still see the 1 by 4 board on the sides.

Post by: Sabotloader on June 26, 2016, 08:18:58 PM
When I sight my rifle les I use a PBR system - Point Blank Range.  I use 3" as my base - so a bullet shot with a 6 O'clock hold on the target will never more than 3" high of 3" low at given range.

What it really works out to is that 99% of the time you sight in right near 3" high at a hundred yards. and from there you do not need to do much guess work out to 150/75 yards.

This a ballistic chart for the bullet I use for elk during rifle season... a Lehigh .458x305 gr. CF.  I use the ML for both rifle and ML season now days...

 (https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv130%2Fsabotloader%2FBallistic%2520Sheets%2F458-305Ballistics_zps95b3448d.jpg&hash=7196429ed499f47ac2d95da8c199e26c44b6d829) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/sabotloader/media/Ballistic%20Sheets/458-305Ballistics_zps95b3448d.jpg.html)

So if you look by being 2.84" high at a hundred - I am dead on at 150 and at 175 down 3"...  At 200 I would be down about 7".

In the military we did the 6 o clock w the m16. I shoot w a peep and it's more natural for me to center my front site where I want to hit, it has a round fiber optic on it. I  just center it on the tape lines and that's where I want to hit.

But at 100 yards and longer your bead cancover up several inches of the target. If you use the 6 O clock hold what you see on the top of the bead will what you hit. I got the 6 O clock hold from the military also.

With a scope I do use the direct hold.
Title: Re: Elk bullets
Post by: PA BEN on June 27, 2016, 07:49:02 AM
I center the front bead on the horizontal line and the vertical line. I feel I'm more accurate that way. At 100 yds the front post might not quite be at the 6, I might be up on the bull or might have some daylight it's hard for me to tell.

I just shot today, I'm shooting 2" high at 100 yds. These barns 290 gr TEZ were landing on top of each other. I have about 8 to 10 inches of drop at 200 yds, (open sites). Traditions Vortex NW magnum 30" barrel, 120 grs 777 ffg, German musket caps. I love this gun, the breech plug removes with a simple twist, after each shot I run a cleaning/conditioning patch from the the breech to the end of the barrel.
Here is some data on the Barns TMZ 290 grs.  sited in at 100yds drop at 200 yds. Barnes Bullets 290-gr. .451" diameter
"TMZ" - 11.5" drop http://www.muzzleloadingbullets.com/Muzzleloader-Bullet-Drop-Comparison-s/1892.htm

. So this is the group I shot today after adjusting from a 250 to a 300gr bullet.  I shot 100gr of triple 7 333f.  This is at 50 yards.  The next trip I'll jump out to 100 and adjust for a zero there.  The only thing that worries me is that they are not clean holes.  To me it looks like the bullet might have some wobble?
Title: Re: Elk bullets

Which sabot were you shooting?  Those bullets are true 458 rifle bullets and have a tighter diameter than ML bullets.  In two of my Knights I use HPH-24 Black sabots instead of the Orange 458 sabots.

The 305 is a long bullet even for a 1/28 twist so if the bullet slips in the sabot or the sabot slips up the bore you may not be getting the rotation you need.

With the HPH-24 I get the grip I need to insure no slippage.

Do you have any HPH-24 sabots?

With open sights and the range you are probably going to shoot the 350 should be a real knock-over bullet.
