Title: How many people have 20+ plus points?
Post by: brutus1 on June 10, 2016, 07:52:50 PM
How many you or have heard of people  drawing with 20 plus points this year? I was just curious  about this cause I'm  whining about  the system  in place. Been putting  in for sheep tag for 38 years now and  never been  close other than a raffle  draw I was like 45 or so....Got drawn  for a cow tag last year and it took 13 points for that...I got issues  with this draw system...

In 2015, 426 of the 15,930 applications for Any Ram Sheep permits had 20 points or more, which was 2.7% of the total. They drew 10% of the permits (2 of 20.)

I have 22 moose, 22 sheep, 22 goat, 22 deer, and 22 elk and have been drawn once for quality elk and blew out my knee and back and couldnt hunt, i figure on giving up on the goat and sheep soon due to physical problems, good luck all!

Never give up......there are units you can shoot both animals with very limited physical effort.  May not be the biggest , but it would still be a trophy.

I have to admit it irritates the crap out of me when I see guys draw high quality tags with very low points, that's just the selfish side of me.  Ive erased this response 3 times already so I don't look like a total D bag.  21 years of waiting just wears on you, soon to be 22 long years.  I wish they had the quality tags only available to guys with 8 or more points.  I will be happy for you guys but not till after my time of utter disappointment passes.  :chuckle:  21 elk, 12 deer and 18 in all the OIL tags---zero draw.

Even with such a silly system, it is natural to feel entitled and I hear you.

21 points for the 3 OIL tags & Quality deer for me. I've drawn the Quality Bull tag 3 times. I did draw a goat tag before it was OIL.

I think we have just too many people applying for too few tags. With our system, everyone thinks they can beat the odds & draw their tag. Few do and WDFG gets tons of $.

Almost all states I apply there is point creep & it is harder & harder to draw no matter what point or nonpoint system they have.

Better luck next year.

I'm 20 for goat and sheep. Really high for moose and quality elk. It comes up every year but I wish they would charge up front for the tag. Might reduce the application numbers a little. Had I known it was going to be this long  without even drawing I would of saved a few hundred bucks a year and just paid for a hunt.

What is the limit "max points?"
Title: Re: How many people have 20+ plus points?

50% of the tags should go preference point, 50% random draw with bonus points and a non-resident cap of 10% of the tags but I realize this would cut their revenue so it will never happen.

How is it that anyone (other than have turned in a poacher) have more than 20 points?  Didn't the current draw system start in 1997?  That would put the max at 20 this year, right?
Title: Re: How many people have 20+ plus points?

Poacher points can't be used towards OIL tags, at least that is what I was told by the WDFW.

Including the point from this year, max is 21.

It is possible to have more than max in the oil permit type tags, I have 22 in antlerless moose, was awarded 2 points by WDFW last year for a merit reason.
Poacher bonus points are not added to OIL permit categories, only deer or elk.

The state used to require money up front for sheep and goats. When they went to a $5 app fee it more than tripled the applicants. Essentially it eliminated my slim chances to ever draw.

I keep fooling myself thinking I am in deep enough in sheep I can't get out. Building on a Antlerless Moose. Hit the OIL Moose in 2008, See folks putting in for quality deer with low numbers of players and I am in those pools. But I take it for just what it is.      " A Lottery"

I pay my money and take my chances. I am not " Entitled" to the tag any more than the next person regardless if they have 20 points or put in for the first time. If their number comes up good on them.

I was awarded a carrot again this year with points which will have me back next year, But if by some accident and I do draw a coveted tag I will just put it in my shoe and go try to fill it with out much fanfare.

I have 20 points in the Any Moose category. I've been drawn for everything else except mountain goat, since I've never applied for that. Should've had 21 moose points but somehow I missed a point one year. The first time I applied for it was, I believe, around 1993 or 1994, before the point system started.

My hunting partner drew a 49n any moose tag this year with 8 points so there is a chance.

In 2015, 426 of the 15,930 applications for Any Ram Sheep permits had 20 points or more, which was 2.7% of the total. They drew 10% of the permits (2 of 20.)

It would take just over 21 years for all the people with 20 points or more to draw an any ram sheep permit IF ALL 20 PERMITS were drawn only by the people who had 20 points or more in 2015. (21 x 20 = 420) Then look at the how many people would have 20 plus points in 19 years. By my simple addition, that total is 15,504. At 20 permits per year, It would take 775 years for all those people to draw.  Just the people with 1 point, 2262 of them, would take 113 years to all draw at 20 tags per year.

This shows what a Ponzi/Pyramid scheme the whole point system is. You get in at the beginning and you have a chance, but those who come later have less and less of a chance at EVER GETTING DRAWN IN THEIR LIFETIME. Because most people don't seem to understand basic math, the State can pass off these money grabbing schemes as a chance to greatly increase your odds of getting drawn for these once in a lifetime type hunts. (Actually, for the people with 1 point now, it's more like once in two lifetimes.)

THE ONLY WAY to increase everyone's chance at getting drawn is for there to be more tags available in the drawings. Otherwise, it's all smoke and mirrors as the State scoops up all the money from people who think they are increasing their odds by paying the state money every year, either to try to draw or just to get another point for some time in the future.

If you want something closer to a guaranteed sheep, or moose, or goat hunt, you will probably have to pay big bucks and head to Canada or Alaska. Otherwise, it's better to just concentrate on the OTC tags you can get and consider any drawing you might finally win a bonus hunt, just don't hold your breath waiting for that to happen.

All true. If the state did give permits to only the highest point holders, anyone with fewer than one less than the most would have zero chance of ever drawing in his lifetime.  A new hunter with half a brain would never start. Application revenues would drop. The state would make it up by charging hunters more in other areas.

:yeah: totally agree, additionally most who have paid into the system don't want to lose their points, so we are stuck with this system we have, good luck to all in future draws

AND, those who have drawn more than one of the OIL tags (since current system went into effect) really should be thanking their lucky stars because many of us who have been trying for 20 years haven't drawn any!

We're never stuck in this system.  It can be changed, you just have to piss a few folks off and move on...
