Just curious if the other two quality elk Nooksack tag holders for archery are on the forum? I am still in shock that we drew as a group!

Yeah that's so awesome I'm jealous. How many points did you have? I've got 8 and really want to draw that tag since it's not to far from me.

Promise you won't be mad? We had 5 points as a group! I put us in as a group thinking we were just building points! Figured there was no way of drawing 3 tags when only 5 were available!Pure luck that we drew!!

Newbie here, how does it work to draw as a group? Is someone assigned as the shooter for the group by the state?

When you apply as a group if anyone's name is drawn everybody in the group gets drawn.  So everyone in the group gets to be a shooter!

Good for you on getting the tags.  Me and my buddy put in as a team.  With the increase in tags we thought maybe....hahaha nope.  Good luck on your hunt.

My Dad drew one of the rifle tags. He's getting up there in years and has never shot an elk. We're pretty excited for this opportunity. Good luck to you and your group!

Unit is accessible in December but the elk are spooky as all get out with all the native hunters deer and elk hunting in their with rifles. I would do everything I could to tag out in Seltember. Congrats on the tags!

When you put in as a group you only have one application not one for each person. So your group of hunters is treared like one hunter with 5 pts not multiple hunters with 5pts.

We had a lot of close encounters and a few missed opportunities.  But unfortunately we didn't come home with anything. We'll be back in December to see if we can make something happen.

Heard a tribal member and I was sent a pic of it - just shot a 9x7 in the sack unit with a rifle where you guys have archery tags. :bash:

I thought it was common knowledge that tags are shared between the state and the tribes in the Nooksack Unit?  Only difference is that the state puts restrictions on weapon type.  I think it is pretty exciting that the state and the tribes have managed the herd so that there are 9x7 bulls running around on the landscape.  There is no shortage of quality bulls in that herd.

Tribes Sharing the Elk with us LOL :bash:. Just like they share their Salmon with us too. It's really working out in someone's favor...

The only reason there are 9x7 Bulls running around the landscape is because these Elk are on private land where the Tribes and State can't manage them.

Exactly right Cultasman. As is the Bull in my Avatar hiding on private property last week.

Yeah Green broke. I know where I took a picture at . And that's the point whatever bull is shot by tribe probably wasn't on private property.  And probably wasn't shot on res. Either . Statement says they don't get them from private river bottom fields as is that's where they can grow big. Reread.

Am I misunderstanding? Forgive me.  It does say 9x7 are only there  because of private.  I might be mistaken but I don't think that bull was killed on private land. Do they only grow big on the valley bottom?  I have an idea we will manage the forest elk and the state can manage the private river bottom.

Pretty sure Tribes cannot hunt on private land.  So maybe it wasn't a tribal hunter.

Tribes and state split an equal number of bull tags.  Tribal season are set by the tribe.  Tribal tags may be split between all the Point Elliott tribes.  A long way from the days when everything was closed for a Conservation Closure.  The private landowners in the valley bottom grow some HUGE elk, but equally HUGE elk grow up on Sierra and other property.  Best of luck to all of you tag holders this year and into the future!

Paying for elk conflict specialists, radio callers . and paying other wdfw people to constantly deal with this herd.

The state isn't paying for the fence and radio collars the tribes are.and it's the tribes putting the fences up

My statement was not about said bull that was killed, good for whoever got it.
My statement was about big Bulls in general and why they are here.

If we is referring to the tribes I would like to hear more about this management plan for forest Elk, maybe some season dates and quotas.

I think the Nooksack is highly overrated.  It's not like there is a big bull behind every tree.  There is a lot of eye candy in very public areas on the valley floor but if you are going to hunt the unit, all I can say is pack a lunch.  There isn't much easy about it.  I have a real soft spot for the unit, but I also live in it and spend quite a bit of time in it (the mountains).

All I can say is congrats to the young hunter and hopefully the issues and politics of tribal/non-tribal hunting and it's inequalities keep itself from from, if, in fact it is a female juvenile. Save the opinions for adults that can defend themselves.

Thanks for the Clarification Tbar. I knew that was the facts. Also doesn't seem likely one group could be in charge of Elk that have legs and cross the hwy all the time. Wdfw and the tribes have to try to Co manage the herd.
