Title: 6.5 eld-x on my camping trip
Post by: savagehunter on June 12, 2016, 08:43:30 PM
Been trying to find 143 gr hornady eld-x anywhere. Went from everett to winthrop to go camping and fishing. Stopped at ace hardware in winthrop and got some fishing  gear. On the way out I see they carry bullets and there are my 143 gr. Eld-x . Score.

That's funny.  Guess you never what you might find in Winthrop.  What cartridge are you loading for?  My 264 Win Mag is really liking the 143 ELD-X with H50BMG.

That's exactly same as my gun. What powder are you going to use? I can share my info if you like. It's consistent half moa at least in mine

I played around with seating depth last weekend.  Fired four three shot groups at 200 yards with the following jumps: 0.010, 0.050, 0.090 and 0.130.  I was surprised to learn that the ELD-X likes to jump.  The 0.090 was the best group at 1.06" at 200 yards.  The 0.130 grouped 1.2 inches.  The 0.050 and 0.010 were still sub MOA but not nearly as good as the other groups.  So something for you all to try.  Play with the seating depth and see if these bullets like a little more jump.

Mine are not jumping much at all. I don't remember exactly but I am thinking they are .008 or .012 off lands. Only depth I have tried.

Right now I am using 4837sc berger on the lands. Overall length at 3.230 inches 2.595 to ogive. Best accuracy at 52.5 gr. Of powder. I also have retumbo and norma mrp which I haven't tried yet.

I'm using imr 4831 in mine. 50 grains with like 3.180 oal maybe. Can't remember for sure. This is right on the edge of showing pressure signs but the primer pockets are remaining tight for me

Typo alert 4831 sc is the powder I'm using. I hear good things about retumbo but have 8 ponds of the 4831. Will probably end up using the retumbo hunting.

Just curious - what velocities are you guys getting out of a 6.5x284 with the 143 ELD-X?  At what velocity do you get the best precision?
