After listening to the liberals and seeing their crazy reasons of ridding AR's or guns altogether I'd like to gear up with the best but need your help. I'm an archery guy who has little to no knowledge of AR's. Price is not a concern. I'm not paranoid id just rather be prepared than scramble. I'm tired of hearing these talks and seeing how out of control these homeland terrorists are gaining momentum.
What's the best AR...light, powerful, lots of options, good caliber, etc...
Admin please move if not in correct location :)

I'm new to the ar game as well. I did a lot of research(Internet) and it seems like you really can't go wrong with any particular manufacturer. It seemed like the best deal for any entry level ar was the ruger ar556 or the mp sport 2. I keep encouraging everyone I know to get an ar while they can.
-
At this point, any and all will be good. www.gungenie.com is a really good place to buy one and have it shipped to your local FFL dealer.
All fees are taken care of of.
-
I can't remember the maker right now (S&W?), but there is an AR-10 lower that will take an adapter to use AR-15 uppers/mags/buffer springs. So you can switch back and forth.
-
Any big name manufacturer is fine, e.g., Ruger, S&W, Bushmaster, Remington, etc. for a basic AR. Colt is generally more pricey. Big money comes in when looking at special barrels, bolts and carriers, triggers, rail systems, and so on, which are all above and beyond needs for a basic AR, or on all the boutique maker names with "combat" or "tactical" in their names. Those boutiques may pay more attention to detail in materials and workmanship, but for a basic AR, you could buy two or more for what they are charging.
While you are at it, get a six pack of forged lower receivers, the serialized firearm bit. ARs multiply, and they go for insane prices when panic buying hits.

^ that.
You can spend A LOT of money on a nice AR and get a nice gun for the money.. that wasn't wisely spent. You probably don't need a stainless barrel and a lot of other match grade components. I'd go with a cheapie from a decently reputable manufacturer and add accessories as needed. Consider picking up a couple of lower receivers for $100, which is technically and legally the gun and you can build it up later with just parts. This would grandfather you in if Killary or Gun Ban Donald (sorry, couldn't help myself) succeed in advancing their big gobmint agenda.
-
I saw some ARs going for $500ish about six months ago. Not sure what they're going for now. Spend less, and buy ammo. Buy a lifetime supply of ammo. Now. I've bought from Cabelas, Natches SS, and Ammoman.com for the better deals and prices. I'd probably check ammoman first. Get at least 3,000 rounds of brass cased, new manufacture and save it all. Buy about a dozen 30 round magazines, as well. :twocents:

AR's are good, the corrupt DEMOCRAT government isn't...

All other insight appreciated.

Seems like people don't want to spend money for you, I will! You said price wasn't a concern, that means I would look at knights armament, larue, noveske, maybe pof, then the rest of the mainstream brands in that order. You can always swap triggers (geissele) and add a scope later. Also be sure to stock up on 30 round pmags. I have a few high end AR'S and it's night and day on which ones get shot vs stay in the safe. There's a reason they cost what they do.

PNW
thanks. Glad you stepped up ;)
it seems ARs are more of a functionality approach than looks. Unlike a shotgun or fancy rifle where you're reluctant to see it slide off a rock or go through brush without stressing over a scratch, the ARs seem to all look similar and not very romantic comparing to the latter.
With that said I'm with you on spending $ to get better performance if in deed there is a huge difference. I only want one so I'd rather spend the $.
-
I am also new to the ar game. Just bought one Sunday. $499.00 at coastal. Anderson Arms. I stayed on the cheaper side knowing i can do upgrades later on. Glad the op did this i can tag along.

Good advice so far, especially about buying some lowers. Have you thought about building one yourself? One of the best things about an AR is the ability to customize. Instead of buying a rifle and ending up with a bin of parts you upgraded, just spec one out and build it exactly the way you want. Doesn't save much when doing a basic build but can be worthwhile if you have something specific in mind.
-
Whatever you do, do it quickly. The custom barrel manufacturers were busy before Orlando. They're going to be going crazy now. If you don't ever plan on selling it, you can buy uncompleted lowers that legally have no serial number stamped so there's no trace when they start compiling lists. There's some drilling to do to complete them. From there on, nothing else on the gun requires going through a background check.
Loyal's Guns helped me put mine together. http://www.loyalsguns.com/ I'm very happy with it and he worked hard to make sure all of the parts matched my vision of what I wanted. Also, jay.sharkbait puts them together. You might PM him. Think about all the uses. Are you wanting to varmint hunt? Big game? Only home defense? Do you want a long-range capability? Do you want more punch than a .223/5.56 or is that enough? .223 ammo is cheap in bulk. My Grendel ammo is $1 a pull, so you might not practice with something if you're worried about the cost and don't reload. My specific firearm wouldn't be good for home defense because of the long barrel.
-
Well the four amendments went down! So the AR scare should subside right!! :chuckle:
I just wish Unique and PB powder would come back on the shelves!!! :)

There is a local seller / builder in Auburn. They have some really nice equipment https://www.rainierarms.com/ (https://www.rainierarms.com/)

Rainier builds some pretty nice rifles, but they are no different than ordering the parts yourself and putting it together (and you can save a bunch of money doing it yourself)
If you are looking for a top tier rifle that's ready to go id consider LaRue, GAP, JP and Nemo.
Or, if you can find him.......GunsmithX

These guys were essential for me finishing my build.
-
Pm carpsniperg2 he built me an AR and you can have it anyway you want , he is a really good dude, easy to work with and he gets it done in short order.. I couldn't be more happy with mine and I had a shorter version of the M-16 A2 built with the exact same peep sight package as the A-2 and it was really affordable..
-
Look for used. Tons of guys bought them after Sandy Hook and now realize they have no use for them and are trying to unload them.

I would imagine those are drying up fast, Mags.

Gunsmith X builds some pretty nice stuff. He built the twins for me.

Lots of quality AR makers. We've never had it so good. If money's no object I'd get LMT (I did). Daniel Defense, Noveske and Bravo Company also make top of the line stuff. There's always Colt too.
-
After you purchase one be sure to join ar15.com.

I just can't see why everyone is so enamored with with the AR-15 other than some one might ban them and they shoot fast. I wasn't impressed with them in Vietnam and traded the one they gave me as fast as I could. I'm still not impressed with one now that I own one, I won a very high end predator/Varmint AR-, match trigger, custom barrel, hand built with all the goodies.
They aren't particularly accurate in their basic form and you have to put a lot of money into them to make them shoot most of the shelf bolt guns have better triggers and more accurate for half the price. My AR will shoot in the .5's, the bolt gun I won it with will shoot in the .3's at about 1/4 the cost. They are awkward to carry and not very well suited to shoot off the bench. Too much penetration for home defense. A decent urban battle weapon is about the only thing they are really good at.
-
I think the great thing about them is their modular design. Much of what you say is true AWS but there versatility of thier design will keep the gun grabbers spinning their wheels. Since the 6.5 Grendel is becoming more popular I think the gun has more real potential.

mine shoots great and they are lightweight, durable and built better than the Vietnam era ones and they are just a blast and cheap to shoot
-
I agree they don't really serve a purpose for me either. I still own a couple and are fun to shoot but I much prefer to shoot my bolt guns. The main reason I own then is because I can. :chuckle:
Some of the super high end customs built for lr are kinda cool but the horsepower leaves a lot to be desired imo
If someone wants one or more have at it. I won't try and talk anyone out of it.
-
I don't have an AR and I don't have much desire for one. That said, I want anyone who wants one, who is not a felon, to be able to walk into a gun shop and buy one.
-
The Flag Burning Collectivists not wanting me to have one is reason enough. If we continue to import Muslim terrorists at the current rate there could come a day when sports utility rifles need to find a home in your truck while out on the town, minding your own business.
-
When I saw the title I totally expected I was going to see this:

You sound like you live in the country and don't have kids or women at home. I live in the city with my wife and when she's here, my daughter. We have home invasions on a regular basis around this town. An AR 15 is easy for a smaller framed person to use for defense than almost any other effective platform. For women and children, someone who is familiar with it and can shoot semi-accurately with it, knows how to load it and unload it, it's the perfect firearm for home defense because of the weight, lack of recoil, and effortless operation. Were I living in the country, it would still be a better defense platform than a bolt gun if someone decided your out-of-the-way place would make an excellent mark.

I just bought an AR 47 today, its pretty sweet.

^ That
Further, though the rounds DO go through walls, they're actually less lethal on the other side than 12ga buckshot.
Love me some Sports Utility Rifles :tree1: :cmp1:

I bought one a couple of weeks ago, here in mexico{royal city wa} theft is almost expected..living here on the dry side has actually sickened me how bad theft is and how many employers use illegals and the amount of fraud we citizens pay for...I find living in the country that the AR is gonna be a useful tool if needed...Pride has left this area..

Driving through Royal city and stopping at that gas station is more then enough for me. Go inside and watch my truck through the window and hope no one robs you at knife/gunpoint.

Gunsmith X is like Santa Claus; there's no convincing evidence that he exists but we all still believe. He can be found in the hearts and dreams of gun enthusiasts while they wait anxiously for a box of parts to arrive. Gunsmith X is the twinkle in the eye of a first time gun owner when he looks at his new AR and realizes that there's just something missing.
If you can't find Gunsmith X in your heart, then try reaching out to the right people. I'm sure there's a few of us who can get you in touch with him. :chuckle:

why are 6.5 grendel barrels so expensive? :dunno: I'm in the market and they're $100 more than any other caliber. I'm about ready to just get a 300 blackout for my daughter to use this year deer hunting and find a grendel barrel later :dunno:
-
Look for a 6.5 lbc.
This explains why.
http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2010/03/26/264-lbc-ar-a-grendel-clone/
It is mostly because of an attempt to capitalize on the idea by trademarking the cartridge name.

"I just can't see why everyone is so enamored with with the AR-15"

Interesting read. I wonder if the ammo, without having to pay the royalties, is cheaper. It must be. :dunno:

I went ahead and made an investment purchase. Prices are going up and stock is already more limited.

Good grab. We love our S&W MP15T

Everywhere I went they had sold out of the S&W. They were on sale for fathers day. Also the Ruger AR556 was on sale to but also gone where they were on sale. That is where I found the Anderson for sale. So if the OP doesn't mind what does every recommend for optic/sights. I am new to AR's and mine was basic flat top no accessories.

Yep. Same here Russ. They had 4 entry level in stock. After that you were paying 2k. I see inventory becoming limited and prices going up up up.

Russ,
What is your intended use of the AR? Hunting? End of the world? Target shooting? I know its a great gun for both hunting and target shooting but my sports utility rifles are all about the day of reckoning on the zombie apocalypse. EOTech's holographic sight has gotten a lot of bad rap lately but for the number of years I used them in austere, dust filled environments I would take one any day of the week over one of the ACOGs or Aimpoints I was told to replace it with (both of which I also used). Contrary to other claims I found the EOTech to be very durable and I beat the living piss out of it. Very easy to reach out and touch someone at 100 yards, off hand and no rest, and plenty of bright glass and fast reticle aquisition when the hajj jumps out from behind the rock 10 yards to your flank in low light. :twocents:

I really like my Vortex Sparc II. Its a nice clear 2moa red dot, easy to use and not too harsh on the wallet.

You guys do what you want to do, but if you buy at panic prices, I think you're going to regret it. They can't even pass a law to block purchases to terror suspects, a renewal of the AWB is virtually impossible right now.

Sure, paying an extra 50 bucks against the risk of sky high prices tomorrow probably isn't the worst play in the world. But there is a huge glut of these on the market already. After Sandy Hook, manufacturers oversold the market for 5 years probably. I would imagine it bankrupted a few of the smaller shops.
I want to buy one myself, but I'm going to be patient. You won't be able to give them away in a year.

Who knows what the panic will be like in November? What would demand be like if the Ds get the WH, Senate and House?

If anyone was paying attention there were lots of screeming deals just a few months back. Palmetto state armory was selling bare lowers for $50! & had alloy 30rnd mags on sale for $7 ea!
Its basic supply and demand. It doesnt matter if its fuel, wood or guns if there is a glutten of product prices will be extra low.

They have bigger fish to fry. The political cost of passing another AWB is far too great for the tiny benefits it would bring them. There may be a panic initially, if the D's do sweep the election, but that will die down as well.
I may be wrong, but I doubt it.

Wow never saw that deal.... i considered parking some cash in lowers but i feel the new transfer fees for private sale eats into the profit too much. I had been looking to drop some serious coin on magazines but couldnt quite pull the trigger if the mags had been $6 free shipping i would have bought a 2-3hundred

They have bigger fish to fry. The political cost of passing another AWB is far too great for the tiny benefits it would bring them. There may be a panic initially, if the D's do sweep the election, but that will die down as well.
I may be wrong, but I doubt it.
Not the actual result, none of that would happen until sometime in January or later if happened at all. Just the panic that would start in November.

I thought about buying a bunch of the lowers as well, but I stocked up on ammo instead. There are a few shops that will give discounts on multiple transfers, but, yes it can eat into the profits pretty good. The PSA lowers, in my opinion are far better than the other cheap ones.

You guys do what you want to do, but if you buy at panic prices, I think you're going to regret it. They can't even pass a law to block purchases to terror suspects, a renewal of the AWB is virtually impossible right now.
It sounds to me like its investment before the prices go up... most "deals will be gone for the forseeable future

I can't remember the maker right now (S&W?), but there is an AR-10 lower that will take an adapter to use AR-15 uppers/mags/buffer springs. So you can switch back and forth.

why are 6.5 grendel barrels so expensive? :dunno: I'm in the market and they're $100 more than any other caliber. I'm about ready to just get a 300 blackout for my daughter to use this year deer hunting and find a grendel barrel later :dunno:
Have you considered the 6.8 SPC. Way more gun than the 300 BO. More powerful, flatter shooter, etc... In comparison with the 6.5 g, the 6.8 offers maybe 85% of the 6.5 gs performance, but with more bullet selection, and way more factory cartridge offerings.
As for the original question...
When the feds, zombies, Royal City Scum bags (insert bad guy de jour) comes, I want a fighting chance. 30 rounds as fast as you can pull the trigger is way better than 4 shots from a bolt action rifle...

The House will likely stay in Republicant hands as it is designed to benefit our more rural suburban bastions of conservatism. Dishonest Donald, who lied about self financing his campaign, is likely going to drive the Senate into the hands of the Flag Burners. I'd say his only hope of election is a scathing indictment of Billary before November.

I saw cases of magpul pmags a while back and thought real hard about picking up a couple for investment. Unfortunately, I think the supply has outsold demand on those, too, for now.
But who knows. We never thought dems were stupid enough to pass obamacare, and they were slaughtered in the polls for their treachery.

Saw Brownells had a deal on Gen 2 pmags 109.99 for 10

I did a psa build back in March for about $450 total

This thread is severely lacking in gun porn. You are all admonished.
Here are two of my ARs.
Left: Bushmaster factory heavy barrel 5.56 carbine upper on SW M&P lower home build.
Right: AA factory 6.5 grendel carbine upper on YHM multi-cal lower home build.

How much was the lube less anderson?

$499.00 at Coastal. Was a fathers day sale. Normally $699.00

Aero Precision is a Tacoma-based concern. A friend with an FFL is offering me a stripped lower for $70 cash out the door. Anyone with experiences (good or bad) with them?

My AR-10 in the pic above is Aero, upper and lower. Went together easily and everything fit nicely. Good finish as well. $70 is a pretty good price.

thanks.

Aero gets pretty good reviews for basic AR receivers.

I don't post pics often but here it is.
