I was drawn for a bull tag, for bethel ridge. It has been several years since I have been in the area, my dad hunts their, so I decided I would hunt with him this year. I put in for tags in the area and got lucky. So my question is would it be best for me to hunt the beginning of the season, since it opens earlier than the general season? Or towards the end of the season? I will only get a week off work if I'm lucky. Also should I shoot the first bull I see or hold out? I will be scouting. This is just the beginning of my scouting, asking questions from guys that know the area and elk better than me. Thanks.

I was in a similar situation having only a week to hunt when we drew bull tags as a group there in 2012 and imo it was huge advantage having the woods basically empty for those first five days before the regular season hunters invade. Less hunter pressure. We got lucky with weather too as the snow came the night before our opener and got the migration moving down from the high country. We filled all four of our bull tags with nice branched bulls before the general season opened. Take advantage of that first week when you are essentially alone without the throngs of general season hunters.

I personally think it depends on which part of the unit you are hunting, where do you want to concentrate your efforts, pm me if you would like.

Go the first wk. less pressure, Bulls still looking for cows that are in there second heat cycle.Know a few good areas you can PM if you need, I dont charge for information. Lol

Both have advantages.... First week, less people in the woods. Second week a higher probability of snow which results in more migratory animals moving down.

I had that tag last year. Turned up a handful of decent bulls scouting before season, with 1 or 2 dandies. Come season we were on elk every day but no bulls until day 5, shot a little guy. Probably could have held out but the general season guys were pouring in by the truck load. Would do things a little differently if I had the tag again
