Title: Another Lab trainer thread…
Post by: Carl on June 23, 2016, 10:53:59 AM
All,

I’m starting the search for a great trainer because I’ll be picking up my lab pup in about 4 weeks.  I’ll be starting her with Bill Hillman’s Training a Retriever Puppy DVD.  After that, I’m looking for an upland Lab pointing trainer.  Now…let’s not get off on whether or not a lab should be pointing.  :chuckle:  I’ll just say, her family background supports such behavior.  Moving on…

Has anyone sent their dog to Gunclub Labradors in Colorado? It’s Paul and Julie Knutson’s place.  I have a friend who sent his dog there and it’s a totally amazing animal.  Here’s a vid of when he picked up his dog.
This dog is from the father of my pup’s mother.

Although they may be at the top of the list, I would prefer someplace closer (and cheaper).

Who has recommendations and experiences with pointing lab trainers?  If there is something you don’t want to share publically, PM me please.

Thanks very much,
Carl

When I was looking for a pup I looked at the jazztime kennels (Calvert's) in Montana and they had some gmpr studs that were also fc-afc. You could try giving them a call. Might have some good recommendations on trainers they know. I know so.e folks who run APLA with their labs I'll ask if they know of anyone good in Wa. You could try PM'ing  Old Dog  (hunt wa member) he's part of that group.

:chuckle: :chuckle:If you can train a lab to sit and beg with excitement when you open a bag of potato chips you can train it to do the same thing standing up when it finds a bird...  :chuckle:

sorry Carl... I just can't resist..

Thanks, Colin. I've been in touch with Old Dog. I'll be joining the organization, but no leads on a trainer.

Where are you located?  Pat Murphy in Monroe runs Apla stuff with some dogs and Butch Higgins has also trained several dogs for pointing.

When I got my lab, I bought Julie Knutson's book, http://www.gundogsupply.com/training-the-pointing-labrador-julie-knutson-book.html, and I think it worked really well for me and my dog

Yup, definitely getting that book. Has anyone used it to train a pointing lab yourself?

I used it to teach my pointing lab how to hunt. He isn't a show dog, trial dog or perfect by any means but that dog can flat out hunt. I attribute most of it to the guidance of that book.

Get some ruffles and say whoa every time you open the bag, tickle the tail while making him stand still. Once you've got the pantry work solid take out some birds and a bag of chips.... :chuckle:

I'm waiting on the book "Happy Gilmore's secrets to training a pointing lad" to be published.  :chuckle:

As soon as you put " pointing" as the major component I feel your better off using a pointing dog trainer. The methodology between retrieving training and pointing dog training is night and day different.  R.J. at quicksilver has trained quite a few pointing labs, fact is he currently owns one himself. I've hunted with several he has trained. Biggest thing is you really need to pay attention and be consistent with following the method/instructions of what the trainer has done or its all for naught.

Here is the most basic requirement which nobody follows

After all the years of having championship and national level field trial pointers RJ just figured out how retrievers can hunt so much better 😊

Not to mention he hasn't even hunted over my 10 year old pointing Chesapeake nothing I love more than showing pointer guys what a real handling dog that will take a 200 yard cast looks like  :chuckle:

I have heard some good things about NW Performance Dogs, I do not have any experience with them though, I just recently spoke to a buddy of mine who has a pointer and sent her there and she does fantastic. I personally sent my lab 10yrs ago to Conway Kennels for retrieving training, he did the standard 2 months I couldn't afford the extra month at the time to have him "complete". He did do well in both duck hunting and pheasant, even pointing on his own at times. Sadly I just had to put him down due to cancer.
