Has anybody started compiling hit list bucks for the 2016 season?
After watching huntnnw learn the habits of that monster WT last year and then kill him within the first couple days of the season, having a hit list seems to be an excellent way to stay focused on harvesting a predetermined deer while also giving a hunter excellent reason to pass on lesser bucks.
Post 'em if you got 'em.
Here's my first for 2016 - hot out of the camera today 4X4 BT w/ eye guards. He's weak in back, but I don't think I'll let him walk another year or two if I see him. I think I may have one more -time will tell.
-
Yep. Got 5 on the hit list.
-
Working the kids' list. My wife is thinking she should get a crack at one of them but it is a kid only list. If the kids don't get them they get a pass til next year.
-
I love it! Making the wife do her own scouting! :chuckle:

Hard core...

Camera has been on a long soak. Hopefully i have more recent pics of this guy. This was the beginning of the month.

Last year she was complaining about the kids getting to shoot but not her so I green lighted her to shoot one milling around at 30 yards. She watched the deer until it got dark and never shot. I think she likes it better when I put the restriction on her than when she has to take a pass herself. It's a struggle, bird in the hand versus two in the brush kind of thing.
You never know what you are going to see in the late season.
You can't a shoot a 140-150" deer if your skinning a 120" deer is what I tell her.
-
this blacktail has been coming into the backyard every other evening while i am shooting my bow. Im just like.. :hello:
-
Nice one there!
If he happened to walk in front of your target, could it be considered an accidental death, similar to a road kill incident? :dunno: :chuckle:
-
A possible hit lister. I think he's likely the little brother of the buck I harvested last year - 50 yards from his brother's final resting place. I'm guessing he'll end up with 3X3 / no eyeguards, just like last year.
-
Biggest body I've seen out here, the rack is not half bad either for a Decatur deer. Looks like he'll be a 3X4 by the end.
-
Ca blacktail.

My #1 so far. Hope to check cams in about another month. Hopefully I'll have more pics of him plus a few others.
-
 That one shows a ton of promise!
Does anyone else just shake their heads in wonderment at the size of the racks on those CA blackies?
-
Best guy to come thru so far. Hoping a couple show up from last year tho.
(Dates wrong. This was last week or so)
-
Wow he is going to be a stud really fat
-
Yeah I'm anxious to see how he turns out
-
Here's another wide blacktail off a different cam. I'm interested to see what he ends up as. These are decent bucks down here, but I've seen three in the last three years that make these look tiny.
-
A couple we stumbled on.

What a toad! He looks like he'll go 250 lbs. easy. Looks old too. I'll bet the young bucks run like hell when they see this guy coming.
-
Here's some more ca Blacktails from the recent cam check.
-
Blurred pic, but I think he's a good one.
-
Christ Miles! Those are dandies!!

Miles, that last one looks like a Selkirk caribou.

OK, I will play.
Most years I see a lot of 3x3 bucks, seldom do we see 4x4 or greater around here. This year is shaping up to be a normal year.

Just for fun, this poor boy was caught with his pants down. What would his Mother say?

Nice ones PD! He's well endowed on both ends! :chuckle:
I think we discussed this last fall/winter..... Where do these bucks go in the fall??
-
F&F, as we talked last year....
I am by no means an expert on blacktail behavior. But I have observed them enough to draw these conclusions. The mid-sized bucks (not the baby boys, who are still with their mothers, and not the bruzers, who never come out) tend to hang together in the summertime period, up 'til late September. Then the bucks just vanish, they really do. Around here the does (with and w/o fawns) become visible in the fields in late October and early November, waiting for the rut. The bucks seem to know where the does are, and they cruise looking for them.
I have been fooled many times before by summertime bucks, and their predictable behavior. You can feed bucks all you want during the summer and early autumn, but it won't help you come Halloween, because the bucks will disappear for their own reasons.
Thus, I hang cameras more for the entertainment value, and also to know the health of the buck groups. Come Halloween, I will go to those known rub lines. Where there are does, there will be bucks.
For those who have time, now is the chance to find rub lines. They will hold both bucks and does come mid-autumn.
-
I feel your pain man!
Sage advice for those wandering aimlessly.
-
I should invest in trail cams.
-
This guy is on the list. If only I can convince my uncle that he's not his pet! For the reasons listed above. By the end of September this guy will never be seen again. Happens every year. A great buck will hang around all summer, than poof.
I told him I know a guy with a multi season tag that will try and get em' ;D
-
Nice one
-
I should invest in trail cams.
Don't. Very frustrating. You will get 1,000s of photographs on your hard drive and no meat at season's end.
Like Wolf just said, come autumn: Poof, and they are gone.
-
Nice BT, in the natural yard environment. Might let this guy go another year. He has a brother about the same size frame but is only 5x3.

Here's numero uno on my list. Lives far, far away in the mountains...hopefully he sticks around a little longer

This would be my #1 but unfortunately, with my Colockum Bull tag in hand for September, I won't be hunting deer in Oregon. This picture was taken last week. Crappy cell phone but the beastly quality is evident.
-
Beastly indeed! Thing looks like a red stag

 pm me some coordinates and I will take care of him for you
-
This guy deserves a pass this year. He looks young and is showing some potential for a nice rack down the road. If I still haven't filled my tag by late buck, I'm betting I won't have the willpower to let him walk if I see him.
Notice, no eye guards on any bucks in this spot. >:(
-
Yeah, it's rare that the deer around my place have eye guards.
-
This is one that I will give an honest effort for this year.
-
-
I'm calling this tank of a buck "Sweat Equity"
-
He's a dandy bushcraft. Looks hard horned but that could be wrong. Was that from a year past?
-
Hard horned. Massive bodied deer. Two years ago and I'm almost 100% certain he wasn't harvested. Hope to see him and his buddies again soon!
-
greenhead_killer - super cool deer, huge rack, very symmetrical and brow tines to die for! Hope you find him in your sights before someone else spots him.

:yeah: Looks like a last years pic? Any pics of him this year yet?
-
Yeah last years pic. Haven't been up there yet to check cams. I have three going to try and get a good idea of where his core area is.
-
Side view for you guys

Sounds like about the right time for early archery  one of the things I love about the archery season is the length and the variable times you get to hunt. Not like it's paid off in recent years but it's a good theory :bash:
-
Had 3x run across the road in front of me today. Had a very tall and pretty wide rack. He looked really young and really healthy. I'd put him at about 4 years. Good to see, I was begginning to wonder if there are actually bucks around here...
-
First time Ive gone into hunting the teanaway with a specific deer in mind, havent got pics for a little while though

yeah, soon as the velvet is off...they switch it up, then in October they switch it up again.
-
Cameras are fun to have. I'm headed up to check mine tomorrow. Archery opener is Aug 20th..
-
:dunno: OK, I'm lost. Where is the archery opener August 20th?
-
California

Velvet is off, can't wait for the 1st !!!

Maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me, but that buck appears to be in velvet. Regardless, I hope you get a chance at him, he's a dandy.

I will upload a better picture once I get home. This buck is already turning nocturnal. Seen him only twice right before it turned dark. If I don't get him, my brother will in November during late rifle.

:yike: :yike: Jaw dropping Muleys. The WT is a beautiful specimen too. Nice shots!
-
Holy Cow, LongRange. Those are some beautiful bucks. My blacktail look like javelinas compared to real deer like those.
-
On my list again!! Chased him and a couple of others last year. Looking good again this year.
-
Been watching him for awhile.
-
Grizman - Super WT, and he looks like he might still be in velvet for the opener. You hunting archery?
-
Fishnfur, Modern Rifle. My last picture of him was early am on the 31st. Still full velvet. Just a small dry area on the backside of one antler. Two other bucks I am watching are just beginning to have shreds of velvet hanging down.
-

Still got the lock on phenominal critters I see.... Can't wait to see what you put down this year! Good luck!

I'm hoping we get a chance to see a picture of him taking a dirt nap later this season. Good luck!

I don't have a pic of the buck but got his sheds today and jumped him out of his bed 60 ish yards from where I picked the sheds up.
