Title: Anybody have experience with sunshades/ARD's???
Post by: atomicjoe23 on February 03, 2009, 10:28:08 PM
Hey. . .do any of you guys have experience with sunshades or anti-reflection devices for scopes???

Do they have any affect on the brightness or clarity of the image???

I'm getting into coyote hunting and it seems that you need every single advantage over those wiley critters that you can get. . .apparently the reflectin off of a scope lens or a gloss barrel is enough to send them running the opposite direction. . .

Are you using a decoy to draw some attention away from yourself??????????

Not as of yet. . .and I don't have a remot E-caller either. . .

. . .but I have watched a TON of video of people calling coyotes in without an e-caller (remote or otherwise) and no decoy. . .granted I think you would probably have greater success with a remote e-caller since it focuses the coyotes attention away from where you are sitting, but it's simply not in my budget at the moment and I don't want to mess around with 60-100 ft. of wire everytime I set-up. . .I would make way more noise/commotion setting up the stupid speaker than I would just finding a good spot and using mouth calls. . .

I've used the sunshade on my Nikon Buckmaster.  Didn't seem to me to affect the brightness or clarity much.

You don't need a remote call. But a decoy while you mouth call works great.

Remotes are a bonus but not needed.  Yes filters work fine but not needed and don't give up that much during the day but are noticeable in low light or overcast days.  If you are getting reflection your better off with a shade alone.  Never encountered this as a problem, but deffinately in regards to barrel and stock.

My stock is good. . .it's a tan spiderweb synthetic with a matte finish. . .the barrel isn't a gloss finish, but it isn't completely matte either. . .it's like a semi-gloss. . .

Title: Will scope shades reduce "glint"?
Post by: ivarhusa on June 01, 2009, 01:03:17 PM
I've just taken an interest in scope shades. My thought was that perhaps keeping direct light off the lens, most of the time, would reduce the likelihood of a glint that would spook an approaching coyote. Anybody else thinking that way?

Here is an example of one product:  http://www.opticsplanet.net/leupold-scopesmith-lens-shades.html (http://www.opticsplanet.net/leupold-scopesmith-lens-shades.html)

I see them sometimes sold as segments, so you can build them out to a useful length. How much length can be added to a 40mm barrel and not affect light gathering on a 4X scope (4x-12x)? Has anyone done this installation, and liked the result (or not)?

That's pretty much the reason that I started this thread. . .

Ah, screw it.  I just went out to Wholesale Sportsman (FKA Sportsman's Warehouse) and bought one.

Yeah, it looks kinda cool.  I got the 2.5" length.

The diameter of the shade is slightly smaller than the original lens, so I had to "shim out" the shade diameter with camo tape to reuse my front lens cover.

the shades are good at reducing glare that you see, the ard is good for keeping you alive when there is and anti sniper looking for you. ards are a bit overkill on song dogs. at least the stack of them that I have killed must have been interested in the glint of light ;)
