I just purchased a Recurve bow so the wife and I can start to learn the ins and outs of archery. While I know I will end up with a million questions down the road I am seeking basic advise not to successful hunting but to successful learning. What kind of things as a new student to archery should I be aware of, recommended gear to start out with? I know practice makes perfect and we plan to shoot a lot on our farm I just want to hear from experienced hunters like yourselves on particular things I might come across that will help me and my wife learn this the correct and safe way.

Start simple and at a short distance. Practice getting the release to feel right. You will see it in the arrow flight. You will be building up the muscles so don't get discouraged with accuracy initially. After a few rounds you will start to see things tighten up. Depending on how you plan on shooting, instinctual or using a sight/reference point, practice getting to the same anchor point consistently. All these little things will build a solid foundation for later shooting. I recommend going to a range or talk to people who are local that can help. Sometimes a person watching you shoot can identify some of the little issues. Most of all have fun with it and be patient, 99% of people aren't crack shots, so its more of a marathon.

Short distance, finger tab instead of glove, repition/consistency is key. Video yourself shooting. Look up some traditional shooting instructional videos online.

Is there an archery shop nearby? If so, a lesson would be give you a great leg up.

Thanks everyone for the pointers. I don't think we have any shops around here I can go into and talk to anyone. I am sure someone i know bow hunts. I just have to kick some rocks over and find them. Thank you all again. One more question. My son is 7 and I want to get him started too, any good youth bows you guys would recommend?

I would look up RadSavs write up on archery it is at the top of the archery section page. My son shoots a Diamond Edge it seems to be a decent bow, and has grown with him.

A lightweight samick or similar. Limbs can be switched out. Co workers kids have them and love them. That being said a mission craze or diamond infinite edge are super adjustable for kids as they grow.
