There is literally no public ground in 178 that holds elk. What tag did you draw?:yeah:. Good luck securing private!

There is pretty much no public land in 178. There are a few feel free to hunt places but the elk are hardly ever on any of those pieces. If you don't know any of the landowner's or know somebody that does it is going to be a hail Mary to get permission. Some off the landowner's have friends that drew bull tags for riffle and muzzy and they aren't going to be giving any permission to anyone before these hunts. And other landowner's are not happy with the Wdfw and how they are giving special perks to Bennett lumber, so they are giving 0 permission. And then there are a few that charge an access fee.:peep:
I am not trying to discourage you just trying to give you a heads up if you are having a hard time finding permission.

Well I drew with 7 points, it should have put in for 181 as my second choice and not 178, but I have the tag and it's early sept so why not.Your a like able enough to guy... Get down there and ask! Maybe you could stack all the haybales for someone to allow you access.

I know a couple of those dotted pieces of land and I'm going to assume that, yes, those are hunt by written permission pieces.

The hunting was fantastic until the morning of the 16th the elk just vanished.. there were a few guys in the unit that were chasing cows around and a few other guys making loops on the roads with their pickups. I found a spot in the elk fence that was smashed down to the ground in one spot.. I am pretty sure I know where the elk went.
I got to see bulls fighting, chasing cows and bugle a few times. This unit is a rifle mans paradise if the elk hold in the there. I got to meet some new people both local and from this forum and learn about a cool place to hunt. I have some thank you cards to write to some gracious land owners that allowed me to hunt on their land.
But a word of caution, I was very very lucky to get to hunt the property that I got to hunt. If you do not know someone from the area that knows some of the land owners or has hunted it in the past I would not apply for this tag other wise your going to be very very limited on where you can hunt. There is some ground that is hunt by reservation only that belongs to Bennett lumber company that you can reserve to hunt for 3 day blocks but the elk move around so much it would be hard to bank on that. There are a lot of land owners and people want to know who you are, where you are from, what you are doing and why. EVERYONE stops and asks you what you are doing and wants to know who gave you permission.
Good luck to all that apply in the future and I hope those of you who are reading this know it's not impossible but it's tough. Thank you to everyone that chatted with me via text message and email.

I've been working with a landowner for deer hunting in the south end but he gets some damage control cow tags that he keeps for himself and family.
I've yet to see elk in there but he gets a couple each year.
I'm looking forward to the up coming deer season bouncing between Peola and ritzville.

Unfortunately this doesn't seem to be exactly true anymore. Due to the Bennett Lumber fiasco, a lot of the landowners have given up on allowing folks access. Some are willing to let people hunt and some who used to let people in are not anymore.

I was given a very firm no from one guy in particular that I was told would be willing to let guys hunt. In fact he gave out several permit cards last year and this year no more. There was another land owner that I did not even ask because of a run in last year with someone that ruined it for everyone. All in all it was a rewarding hunt bull or no bull. It was something I will never forget. In the end it's all about the memories.
