Title: Hunting AR - questions
Post by: 724wd on July 12, 2016, 08:01:41 PM: I have a 6.5 Grendel upper arriving in a few days. My lower just needs anodizing and it'll be ready, but I'm stuck on the buttstock. I am building this as a hunting gun for my daughter and I. She's 9, so we need an adjustable stock. Is a comb riser important? I can't spend $200 on a stock, but if it's the right one, I might be able to stretch to $100.

There's an Adaptive Tactical EX at Cheaper than dirt that has a chunky recoil pad that I think my daughter would appreciate. And it's cheap, which pleases my wallet! :o but no comb adjustment.

I like the Luth-AR stock, but I fear it's too long. Minimum LOP is 13.25"

I also like Magpul stocks, but none have comb adjustment.
EDIT: Man! why didn't anyone tell me to check out the buttstock accessories on Magpul's site?! :chuckle: :tup:

who has an opinion on adjustable, collapsible, budget-friendly stocks? :hello: :chuckle:

Post by: AWS on July 12, 2016, 08:11:03 PM: I have this one from Magpul and accepts snap in comb risers. I have 1/4" riser on mine but had to turn it around and shorten it as the charging hadle would hit it as I shoot with a very short length of pull.

I like the fact that it collapses my AR enough to fit in a takedown shotgun case yet locks the stock solid when extended.

Post by: 724wd on July 12, 2016, 08:44:54 PM: and can i use ranger plates on the AR-Stoner mags? They have the same profile as a 5.56, right? I thought something like the ranger pulls would help with making sure the short 5-round mags come free.

Post by: fly-by on July 12, 2016, 09:05:04 PM: Luth-AR makes a carbine stock that is 11-11/16" collapsed. Obviously not an option of you already have a rifle length buffer tube. They are light and very adjustable, though a little over your stated budget.

Shipping is free and if you can wait for a holiday (you just missed their 4th of July sale) they will have a 10% off code. Don't go too cheap on a stock, you'll just end up buying a better one down the road and spending money twice.

Rogers also sells an adhesive cheek rest that raises it about 1/4".

Anyone have an opinion on using a heavier than normal buffer for a 6.5? what little I can read on google results some think they reduce recoil, which my daughter would like, i'm sure!

Post by: Thefisherman83 on July 14, 2016, 06:56:36 AM: Wouldn't call it budget friendly, but I love my UBR! Locks in rock solid so there's no rattling. Its a little heavier as well which helps balance out the rifle and absorbs a little more recoil.

Adjustable block makes life much easier with the 6.5G. I would use a H3 or HK red buffer.

Not for the state. A few of the tribes have 5 rd limit for semi autos.
