As many of you know, Aaron was killed in action on the 23rd of April, 2013 in Logar Province Afghanistan. Known as Colockumelk to those on this forum. He was a very positive, active member of this community.
As some of you know, Aaron dreamed of one thing. He wanted to hunt loud mouth, fire breathing, stinky, and muddy bull elk. With multiple combat tours, and never ending training, Aaron missed many of hunting seasons. When he could make it home for some hunting, he chose to come back to Washington and hunt with family, rather than pursue out of state adventures, despite my pleading to do so. Despite his faithful dedication to applying for his quality bull permits, he was never able to draw. Killing a mature bull elk was the one dream he was never able to accomplish.
Fast forward three years and here we are. Those of you who know me, know that I am a bit obsessed with Mule deer. Elk hunting is something you do to fill the freezer and fill the few weekends between deer tags :chuckle: Don't get me wrong, I do love to call elk, and shoot arrows through them, but deer are what really trip my trigger. I told myself after Aaron was killed though that when I drew a bull tag again, that I would give it everything I had and kill the bull of his dreams.....or die trying!
It may sound weird, but I knew I was going to draw this year. Multiple folks can confirm that I called it even. I can't count the dreams I had this spring about it. So when I checked my results and saw that beautiful "selected" by my quality bull I wasn't surprised, but it felt like a weight being lifted off of my shoulders.
As soon as I saw "selected", preperation began. My focus for this hunt is unlike anything I have experienced. Motivated doesn't even begin to describe it! Scouting, conditioning, shooting, upgrading gear, etc. This is the focus of this thread. I want to share this whole journey with you, from the beginning. I'm going steep and deep! Where the air starts to thin, where the big bulls get whooped by the bigger bulls! We are gonna live with them, and stay in them, until we triumph, and fulfill the dream that Aaron so desperately wanted to fulfill. The Getsum crew is in full effect and are rallying to the cause! So come along and lets go elk hunting :tup:

I took it over to Denton at Rock Creek Archery for new strings and some tlc. The man does amazing work and she is shooting as straight and as smooth as ever :IBCOOL:

I guarantee you I will do everything I can to assist you in your pursuit of Aarons dream. I often count my blessing of friendship that he brought through his service . I'd give it all up I a second for you to climb that hill with him . No doubt in my mind he is looking down and bragging about his little brother and all you have done in his honor .I agree, but life unfortunately doesn't work that way. With death, comes life. Aaron's passing has motivated me to be a more passionate hunter, but more importantly a better human. I try to serve others more, and myself less (really hard :chuckle:). It's strange that something as terrible as losing Aaron could bring such blessing to my life. The friendships and the focus that it has brought to my life is the silver lining on an otherwise dark and stormy sky.
We are gonna tear that mountain apart buddy!!!! :tup:

THEN, on sunday, a tree fell on my house! So this week has been clean up and insurance BS. Gonna hit the high school today though, then wood cutting saturday and a run and gun scouting trip sunday to check on a bull.

Karl ,CONGRATS !!!!!! I really get off following you guys hunting but the other day I looked in the box and found a alternate any bull tag down the ridge from you guys !!!! Karma has struck us big time. I didn't think I would be drawn again till I reached my 80 th birthday. I've been making puppies for a long time working for the lazy B so I'm going to have to follow along in your workout thread hopefully some of that will rub off on me. At least I think I'm 35 again although my Chiro keep telling me I should think about taking it a little easyer. Like that's going to happen ! My shoulder still has problems and our Friend Cory with all his kindness is going to help me out with a child's bow for the season karma struck again. Hope we both Tag Out on the same day. One bull in particular stood out. He kept his distance a bit from the rest of the group, but his size was very noticeable. Huge mass and very respectable fronts. Tops were still balled up, so I know he had lots more growing to do. As conservative as I can be, I put him at 304". If he adds 25-30", which I think he will, he should finish out at or above the magic 350" mark!
I've tried very hard to not hit the same piece of dirt twice, as I want to see as much of the trail systems, and ridges as I can, but I will be back on this bull again soon.
He will be a hog!

All went well till we were loading up to leave and kid on a bike went riding by on the main road a few hundred yards away. Lucy couldn't stand it and had to go say hello :bash: As fast as she could run, off she went! Long story short, she got rolled by a Ford Explorer! Somehow she came out of it with only a broken leg.
HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE THANK YOU to Trevor for having my back and wrangling kids and dog with me, not only when it happened, but also at the vet clinic! Couldn't have done it without you buddy :tup:
Surgery, pins, and a few grand later, she will be all right. I've had to put down two dogs in the last two years, and I'll be darned if it was gonna be three.

I bought a pair of kinesis pros from lathrop and sons in december. Couple scouting trips on them and im really liking them so far other than hot feet in the summer weather. I like this size of boot until it i get into deep snow.Thank you! Good to know. :tup: Yeah they will be an early to mid season boot only. The Lowa's and the meindl's will come out for the later seasons

I grabbed the tac duplex with the DT1 bag and guide lid a few months back and wow. Packing gear has never been easier. Cant wait to get it bloody. Its stuffed w scouting gear for the am as we speak. I put way more than I ever carry so well see.
I like the boots. Might have to get a pair.found em for cheap on Amazon. Prime put em here in 2 days :IBCOOL: like I said, I'm a bit nervous as I've always ran a stiff, high top mountaineering boot. I'm always down for trying new gear though
Yeah Im still running the kenetreks Mountain boots from a few years back and might not be able to live without the still sole and ankle support. But they are a pain on the gravel roads I walk in on to hunt. Just need them to get off the road.

wore them tonight for some arrow flinging and was really surprised at how much ankle support they gave me when all laced up. Pretty comfy boot right out of the gate. Loving every piece of this thread minus the tree on the house and broken leg on your lab. New gear is great! You can kill with old gear but doing it with new gear is better! I have the new Kifaru duplex frame and love it. Have the previous gen too... Some say I have a Kifaru problem. I just like to think I have a pack frame for my buddy to use! Best of luck. Bad stuff happens in three's :bash: In an effort to be a good husband (and to do my duties so I can get back to scouting) I made a run up the hill to cut a load of wood. Not only did I have to resort to slumming a load of lodgepole, but I snagged a stump backing out a skid road and jacked up my bumper :bash: Tree, dog, truck! All in a week. Got the bad three out of the way though so should be smooth sailing through hunting season :chuckle:I bought a replacement bumper for my 08 Tundra off Rock Auto for WAAAAAY less than anyone would sell me around here, I hit a deer 3 weeks ago so I'm fixing to order another

Not only did I have to resort to slumming a load of lodgepole, but I snagged a stump backing out a skid road and jacked up my bumper :bash: Tree, dog, truck! All in a week. My conditioning the last two weeks has SUCKED!!!! This last weekend was our 3rd annual Run to Remember, fallen heroes 5k that my mother and I put on here in my home town. It's a crazy amount of work and the candle got burned at both ends. We had an amazing turnout this year though. With over 200 participants and over $9,000 raised for the USO, I feel like I'm finally earning the freedoms that I've been given!I Know that guy! The E-7 shaking the guys hand..... He was in my Plt. a long time ago...
THEN, on sunday, a tree fell on my house! So this week has been clean up and insurance BS. Gonna hit the high school today though, then wood cutting saturday and a run and gun scouting trip sunday to check on a bull.

Best part was just stuffing the tarp in the bottom for the pack for the trip out, sometimes used to wrap boned out meat and as a ground cloth for deboning - and throw it in the trash when you get home.

I have a 250 yard hill loop, first 100 yards is 15 degrees,then 50 yards of 45-55 degree, then 50 yards of 15 deg,then another 50 yard 45-55 deg....then it loops back to its self on relatively mild slope
80 pounds on the pack....walk the first time for warm up...then walk the mild parts & run the steep parts for 5 more consecutive loops....very controled & slow on the way down

While Karls was napping I was hiking my old ass up hill for hours. Again can't post pictures sorry . I did see a good bull 7x he was fifty yards off the trail by the time I got my phone out for a picture he buggied. Ankle did well I pretty much hiked from 6 am to 4 pm I'm done for the day ! God help us getting a bull out of there.
Going up those hills with a sack of meat is one thing but going down is another :yike: I left a chunk of my butt cheek up there back in June. Slippery stuff!

Breakfast will vary, but it's usually a butt hole sandwich or like this meal, it's a cup and a quarter of granola and a heaping scoop of vanilla protein powder. Add water and you have protein packed granola. Also missing is a wilderness athlete hydrate and recover drink mix, which I have with dinner.
I remove my MH from the packaging so I can fold the bags flat. It really saves on space. Daily rations are seperated into gallon ziplocks for easy access and to ensure I don't skimp on food.

It's a Kifaru DT1. Not sure what max is, but I have had North of 100 pounds in it more times than I can count in the last three years. Biggest load was probably 130 ish last year in Idaho. Wasn't weighed but a whole boned out mature mule deer, my whole camp, head and cape. 4 miles back to camp, then 7.5 out to the truck. It carries amazingly well.Full gear and water, plus the big glass and I'm sitting at 40.3 pounds. I do know my food is 1.9 pounds a day, so for an 8 day hunt I'd be at about 56 pounds. I could definitely shave a bit but like i said before, I wanna eat well and be comfortable. I've done the ultra light thing and for me, it sucked :chuckle:That isn't bad. We really wanted to make our destination so we could be glassing in the a.m. so we hiked till almost 11. By the time we got the badger hole set up, it was time for a serious chow session! There was food everywhere :chuckle:

We pitched this tarp a dozen different ways and every one would be useful in a certain weather condition. The amount of open space this tarp provided was absolutely insane. This is my new go to system until the cold temps hit and I start packing the stove.

Sweet. I found this about the DT1 "this pack is rated at loads of 100 pounds plus for taking on any task, anywhere with relative comfort. Yet it compresses down to day hunt size–take it with you and carry back massive meat and trophies from the spot you take them."
I am looking for a new pack and might have to check out the Kifaru a little closer.

And apparently, archery is damn expensive, gonna have to sell blood or become a gigolo or something to keep up with cost.I think they are an amazing tool as well, but for an animal who is about to go into the rUT and MOVE, I feel they are no more effective than just locating sign, water, feed, etc. I think a lot of guys shoot themselves in the foot by committing too hard to a spot because they had a camera there. I do love all the cool pics guys get on them though. Just not for me.

Well said Karl, they are nothing more than a tool to use. We have our cameras set in a place we have hunted for over 40 years. No surprise they are in the pictures, I am only looking to see if there are any quality bulls in the group. I think the one I sent you a picture of is a solid shooter.

I always found a little diversion or time away right before a huge race paid off well. Getting burned out was never much fun....take some time away so you can recharge that hunger.

This morning I hit the mountain early so I could do some glassing and then get some rifle shooting done. Heard 4 bugles, saw 3 other bulls, one of which was a good 300ish 6x6. He was really putting the hurt to a poor old tree.
Came home and got some shelters water proofed just in time to meet Coach so I could check out his Oregon bull! Man did that get me fired up! Rounded off the night with my birthday dinner at the inlaws. Good weekend and very relaxing. 5 more days and it's time to start this wild ride :IBCOOL:

Back to hunting. 4 legal bucks tkday, one I want to shoot. Very nice deer. 25-26" wide, boxy frame, 4x4 with a 4 or 5" inline between the g3 and G4 on the passenger side. Already stripped with nice dark color from all these burned trees. Haven't been this excited about a washington deer in a long time. Two different stalk attempts resulted in back outs due to terrain. Didn't bump him so I'll be back after him tomorrow.

Just add water to the granola and you have cereal. I prefer cold but hot works too
snacks
Larabars-2
Justins Almond butter
Fruit leather-2
Choc mint builder bar
1/2 cup sour patch kids
I eat these between main meals
lunch
Ramen
tuna with tapatio and olive oil
I eat two seperate lunches. Usually around 10 and 3ish
dinner
Mountain house with olive oil depending on the entree
Wilderness athlete hydrate and recover drink mix
Snickers bar for dessert
Some entree's are good with the olive oil, some are not. I also add a tapatio single depending on entree.
All if this comes out to about 3,700 calories and 130-140g of protein depending on MH meal.

Have you tried the peanut butter powder from Costco... Grubbin. I mix it with vanilla and chocolate protein powder. It's like desert for breakfast.

my bow is staying at base camp till this is done . We have a purpose and that's a bull for Arron. not only him but for everyone that has gave there lives for this great country . We are truely blessed to be able to do this and I don't take it lightly . Karl has gave his all supporting our military in Arrons name. the least I can do is give this hunt my all. We have troops at base ready to roll what ever the need . What a amazing bunch .......Time to get it on !I really haven't mentioned enough all the help and support from my buddies. From Mike and Trevor who kept me honest on all those hot Thursday workouts, to my friend Dan for letting me crash his house a few nights a week to lob arrows in the pasture, to the getsum crew for the continued unwavering support! Heck Coach gave up sugar so he could get into lean mean fighting shape! I'm surrounded by amazing individuals who support me and to push me to be better. I'm ready for this. I'm as ready as I've ever been for a hunt. Its gonna be a wild 9 days men 8)

I was gonna cape him but being upside down and against a tree, it was too much effort by myself. Pics are deceiving, it was steep as hell, so just boning him out solo was enough hastle. On top of that, a shoulder mount on an elk isn't exactly in my hunting budget. I could do it, but it would mean possibly sacrificing a deer hunt next year and that isn't an option :chuckle:
When I get home sunday I will sit down at a real computer and fill you all in on how it all went down. It was one hell of a hunt :tup:

Thank you all for the kind words. I feel so humbled by all of this. He's a beautiful bull and one who represents so much. Slept in a bit and had a good breakfast with the guys. Whit helped me cut meat most of today and I ran home to get more ice and get gear squared away again. What an amazing story and a great way to honor your brother. Unfortunately, I know what it is like to have to hunt with the spirit of a loved one right next to you. You can feel them, have a conversation with them, but it is still a huge hole in your life. It was a great thread to follow along and you earned that beast. I was just at his place and its currently grind fest. I'm sure he'll post when he's all done wrapping that meat :tup:Thank you all for the kind words. I feel so humbled by all of this. He's a beautiful bull and one who represents so much. Slept in a bit and had a good breakfast with the guys. Whit helped me cut meat most of today and I ran home to get more ice and get gear squared away again. There are more tags in camp and elk on the mountain that need arrows so no time for rest and relaxation. That stuff is for January :chuckle:its Monday! As for a mount, I will just be doing a euro. I can't fit an elk in my house anyways so it will live at a buddies until we move. I was gonna cape him but being upside down and against a tree, it was too much effort by myself. Pics are deceiving, it was steep as hell, so just boning him out solo was enough hastle. On top of that, a shoulder mount on an elk isn't exactly in my hunting budget. I could do it, but it would mean possibly sacrificing a deer hunt next year and that isn't an option :chuckle:
When I get home sunday I will sit down at a real computer and fill you all in on how it all went down. It was one hell of a hunt :tup:

Huge thank you to everyone for the words of encouragement and congratulations. This hunt meant a whole lot to me. I set my expectations high. Not only for myself but for all of you. This HAD to be an epic adventure for everyone. Like I said before, the only pressure I put on me was for myself. I wasn't afraid to fail, but I was afraid of not succeeding in what I set out to accomplish. Not sure if that makes any sense, but not sure how else to word it.

There was more than one time during this hunt that my arms goose bumped from the emotion and dust irritated my eyes. truely humbling to be alone g for the ride . Karl was stead fast , I never once doubted he would get it done . I had questions about my own fitness level and wondered if I would be able to step with a man beast thirteen years younger than my self . it reminded me of my self when I was in my early thirtys.. this guy carrys a passion second to none about Hunting ,his prep is unreal as you all have seen . I never questioned wether or not he would get it done , in fact I said by day four going in . When a guy sees a bull over a mile away and says how killible he is it oozes confidence in his ability . He expected to succeed and prepared tirelessly to succeed ,he had to succeed there was no other possible outcome . That's the kind of guy that Arron would be proud of .:tup: well said.

Work couldn’t end quick enough on Friday! The truck was loaded and the guys were already setting base camp! As we all converged on Friday you could feel the excitement and anticipation in the air! We tossed our extra gear in the wall tent, loaded our bows and packs in the jeep and kicked up some major dust on the way up to the trail head! We had about a 4 mile hike to get to where we wanted to camp that night and light was fading fast. We weren’t done setting spike camp till after 10pm and with a full day of work and a solid hike under our belt that day, sleep came fast. Up before the sun, we were glassing bulls right off the bat. Nothing that looked worthy of a freedom arrow but it felt good to know there were bulls around. A full day of hiking and calling produced little rut activity though.
Day two was much more eventful however. We went a different direction from camp and not too long into the morning struck a bugle. With a bit of glass work we spotted a 320 class bull feeding by himself. It was very tempting to make a play at this bull as we felt he was very killable but he just wasn’t quite what we were after. By mid day we had struck several different bulls but opted not to make plays on them due to location and wind. As we worked around a ridge we got a lone bull to sound off. It was a very half hearted bugle but the follow up bugle was a lot more intense! Before we really had a chance to get set Corey had him in my lap! He called him on the wrong side of the tree though so there I was at full draw with a shooter bull 10 yards from me with a giant snag blocking his body. It wasn’t long until the wind ended our stand off. After that we decided that this was going to be our last night at camp and that we were going to pull out and come in from a different trailhead that would put us in a better position on some new country we wanted to look at. That night it got wild on top of that mountain! Our windbreak didn’t work too well when the wind decided to come out of the east with a vengeance! With it came pounding rain as well! The next day we did a huge hike through a drainage we wanted to hit before we left. It soon went from hike to rock climbing in a hurry and I think I can speak for Corey as well when I say I won’t be hiking the east end of that drainage anytime soon!
Back at base camp, a hot shower and a belly full of Chris’s gourmet cooking had us feeling soft. I didn’t want to pull off the mountain. Even though it was the right call to move locations, I felt like I had quit. Camp is always a fun time with good friends but my mind and my focus was on the mountain. Aaron’s favorite quote kept echoing in my head. “Fortune favors the bold”. We needed to be back out there.
Early wake up and we were off! We hit the trailhead perfectly right at shooting hours so we could hunt our way in. Almost immediately we got a bull to fire off! Soon after another fires off! As we close the gap, the other bulls shut up and then there is only one bugle commanding the mountain! We knew the elk were moving down into the bottoms every morning so we knew we had to close the gap fast, stay ahead of them, and make sure we were below them so the thermals would work in our favor. As we closed in, Corey spotted cows towards the top of the ridge, but as we got closer, they got closer! Finally we had to make a stand. As Corey began to call, the bull got more and more impatient. This was not the right spot though and Corey signaled to me to move again. This time we were where he wanted us and he sounded his approval with a bugle that made the hair on my neck stand at attention! He was coming!
I knew I had to draw early as he would be able to see me by the time I could see him, so when I heard his glunking right out of sight I pulled the string on Aaron’s Hoyt and anchored it to my face just like I had done thousands of times before. Before I know it I am staring at a bull elk at 20 yards………through a big vine maple! No shot again! All I can see are his huge tops and big mass! I don’t know how long I held my bow but with a 55 pound pack on my back, it felt like hours. I knew I couldn’t let down though or this encounter would be over. FINALLY he backed out and I was able to let down. He wanted to see this cow though and soon I caught his antlers below me trying to circle us and get our wind! Again I came to full draw but again he backed out. A big log diverted his approach. Around the log he goes and again his coming my way. I draw as he passes a big fir but again hangs up. I held and I held and I held until my arm was literally about to give out when he starts to move! Lungs empty, halo up, anchor the pin……….
This was my moment of truth. All the prep and all the focus came down to these few seconds. Fifteen days of scouting. Countless grind sessions with a weighted pack. A thousand arrows shot from my bow. A friend who would follow me to the pits of hell and who had sacrificed and prepared to support my mission. A whole community of hunters who were supporting me, encouraged me, and keeping me honest. Until this moment, none of that had put pressure on me, only focus. Now the weight of it all bore down on me with the weight of the mountain I was standing on. It was not enough to distract me from what needed to be done though. A soft “mew” from my diaphragm brought him to a halt with his leg forward. As he put the breaks on I was already almost through my shot process. “Pull…Pull…Pull” I recite as I pull against the back wall and squeeze pressure on my release. The shot broke as smooth as if I was flinging freedom arrows at foam in the back yard and the bright green light disappeared into his side! Tight to the shoulder and mid body……
Collapsing under the weight of the world at the shot, I turned to Corey and gave him the thumbs up. As he approached though, doubt crept into my mind. Did I really see a perfect shot? Or did I see my arrow deflect on a small limb I couldn’t see and fall short? Corey was confident he heard the hit and that I really did see what I knew I saw. But I was not convinced. Seconds later though my questions were answered by the sound of a bull elk taking his last breathes!
All the emotions that had been suppressed by intense focus and drive came barreling at me like a freight train! I simply wept into my hands. I couldn’t control it. I didn’t want to control it. I was relieved! I was happy! I was grateful! I was angry and I was sad. Not that I had taken a life, but that Aaron wasn’t there to see it. Angry because if he was alive he surely would have been there with me. Angry because I had to fulfill his dream for him.
We decided to give him a bit of time even though we knew he was dead. I grabbed phones and climbed out of the drainage to find some service and call in the cavalry. After I sent out a group SOS with instructions, I made two very important phone calls. First was to my little brother. He desperately wanted to be there for this hunt but the life of an Army Infantry Officer doesn’t allow for random elk hunts. I barely got the words “I got Aaron’s bull” out of my lips and I was a puddle of tears again. My brief call with my dad resulted in the same.
With my call for help sent out, I dove back down the ridge to find our bull. Corey had attempted to find my arrow and find first blood but turned up nothing. Once again my panic set in despite hearing his final bellows. With elk tracks everywhere, we opted to each take a likely path. I didn’t make it 30 yards down the hill when Corey yells to me, “hey you want to see a dead bull with huge mass!?!?!” I went tearing through the brush and there he was! He was everything I had came to find and more. I was truly humbled by the beast that laid at my feet.
After a quick picture session it was time to snap back to reality and tackle the task that lay in front of us. We had a really big animal on the side of a steep hill that had a date with some coolers and some ice. Since we had all our spike camp gear on us, Corey elected to load it all in his pack and hike it back out to the trailhead and then lead the pack mules (our friends) back in when they got there, while I broke the elk down. This worked well except in our rush to get going we forgot a key maneuver. Get the dang upside down elk turned around and off the dang tree! I’ve never worked so hard to debone an animal in my life! It took me twice as long as it should have and by the time I was done I was absolutely spent!
Chris and my buddy Jeremie were the first on scene. Chris being the smart dude he is, grabbed Corey’s truck which had a dirt bike in the back! So while I boned, Jeremie hauled loads up to the main ridge where Corey met him and rode the loads out the rest of the way. Almost all the loads that is. There was absolutely zero possibility that all my elk was going to get carted off the mountain by someone else’s power. I trained all summer for a reason. So in the Kifaru went a big sack of meat and on top of that the head and rack. This load was getting walked out. I’m embarrassed to say this climb took a bit longer than it should have but I was pretty spanked from breaking the elk down and also part of me didn’t want it to end so soon. Every time I got to a vantage point I had to stop and just drink it all in. The smell, the sounds, the sights. I wanted to remember it all.
As I crest the second to last hill, there sat all the guys. All these men who prepared for this in their own way and who were stead fast in their commitment to see me succeed. I don’t know if it was their heckling or my own overwhelming desire to finish strong for them, for me, and for everyone following, but all of a sudden I heard the voice of my friend Scott Salmon echoing in my head from the NWMC. “Lets run it in! Finish strong!” So that’s what I did! I choked up on my trekking poles and dug deep! I ran as fast as I could with a pack that weighed 2/3 my body weight! When I crossed that imaginary finish line and Chris pealed me out of my pack, I collapsed on the ground! We had done it! We climbed the mountain to find a mature bull to honor the dream of a man who gave everything so we could live our own dreams and we did it!
As I reflect back on the hunt, and everything leading up to it, I am reminded of how truly blessed I am. I have good men that I am lucky enough to call my friends, who will walk through fire to see me succeed. I have a loving family who push me to be a better man every day. I live in a place where I am free to pursue the things that bring me happiness without the fear of evil taking it all away. And lastly, I had the honor of calling Aaron Blanchard my big brother. I was blessed with 30 years of memories with him, from childhood adventures, to hunting adventures, and life adventures. Although he was taken from us far too soon, I am grateful for the time I was given.

Cpt Benson relayed the following;
“I give you all one last duty for Richard and that’s to tell the American people of his sacrifice"
"you’ll never forget the heroes that you served with. You will carry that weight for the rest of your life but the American people will not know of their sacrifices unless you share it with them."
I think you are doing exactly that, allowing people to see the sacrifices that not only our service members make, but also their loved ones. By publishing this amazing story you would further share the sacrifices.

Karl, I too agree that the story of this hunt needs to be published in a magazine. I'll share a short back story and a quote that has lived with me since the day I heard it, which is the driving force behind why this story should be shared on a national level.
On May 31 2011 my buddy was killed by an enemy RPG. Coincidently this ocurred probably less than 7 klicks from FOB Shank. During the memorial service my CO relayed the above referenced message.

Lots of people are much better with their words than I am! I'm very glad I could look in on this one! I've said it before and I'll say it again. I met Karl last year and within the first few times scouting with him it felt like we've been great friends for ever! I even had the pleasure to meet the whole crew this year and I tell you what, those dudes are absolutely intense at everything they do! That includes 3D bow shoots... Wait scratch that... Aaron was an internet friend on several sites and I looked forward to meeting him one day.
We talked about our love of ELK and flying helicopters as he progressed through Army flight school nearly 40 years after I did.

I don't think you give yourself enough credit for your writing style (home run man), but I would hope you strongly consider submitting the article to honor Aaron and inspire all hunters to what is possible when the hunting community comes together to honor the men/women that serve and the sacrifices they make on our behalf. And if nothing else, do it for his wife and children ... it will be something that they will be able to pass down with pride for generation after generation in honor of Aaron's sacrifice and what it has meant to all of us. I believe all people in this nation should know and be inspired by Aaron's and your tale (in his honor).

Lots of people are much better with their words than I am! I'm very glad I could look in on this one! I've said it before and I'll say it again. I met Karl last year and within the first few times scouting with him it felt like we've been great friends for ever! I even had the pleasure to meet the whole crew this year and I tell you what, those dudes are absolutely intense at everything they do! That includes 3D bow shoots... Wait scratch that... Building decks is more like it. Thanks for letting us all share the journey Karl!

I don't think you give yourself enough credit for your writing style (home run man), but I would hope you strongly consider submitting the article to honor Aaron and inspire all hunters to what is possible when the hunting community comes together to honor the men/women that serve and the sacrifices they make on our behalf. And if nothing else, do it for his wife and children ... it will be something that they will be able to pass down with pride for generation after generation in honor of Aaron's sacrifice and what it has meant to all of us. I believe all people in this nation should know and be inspired by Aaron's and your tale (in his honor).

You should definitely compile the final writing with the earlier intro and posts and submit it to a few magazines as well as the family and maybe some of the military periodicals. Our soldiers need to know how many of us feel about their ultimate sacrifice and you just flat out NAILED IT. :archery_smiley:

I re did a skull cap of my dads first bull for him on his last birth and dug up old pics of his camp and from the day he harvested it. I personally really like the way it turned out, I think it's cool to go up to it and see the pictures from those days and I know it means a lot more to my dad being able to look at those memories right there every time! He also really likes it. I'm sure you could make a plaque with a skull hooker deal on it if it's something you're interested in, just an idea!That turned out awesome!

So the antlers would be mounted on the top of the vertical as it would be on a live elk. Then on the horizontal you could hand things on it. Or you can leave them at my place. !!!!!! I really like

Decided to go with a design from Montana Pallet Art and design. Will be in the shape of WA state with an image we are piecing together. Aaron was with me in spirit so we took an image of him with a pack full of elk and tied it into an image of me packing out the bull. Will like like we were on the packout together. Of course the backdrop is red white and blue. Should be a pretty amazing piece. Of course I'm cape hunting this year so it will be a short lived euro.

It wasn't easy. I couldn't remember what year it was. I spent a lot of time searching in 2013 and 2014. Found Big Nasty too, and that brought back some good memories.

This thread was directly responsible for me becoming an active member of the forum. I was a lurker before and had no intention of getting involved beyond that, nor had I ever been active on any type of forum. I didn't know who anybody was at the time, including Karl (who I think had a different handle back then) but this story coupled with the sheer amount of rallying and community support behind it was the coolest damn thing I had read or seen in a long, long while. :tup:

Everyone who followed the thread in heart and spirit was with Karl every step of the journey through the hard times all the way to the end and cried with joy and praise in his success.
