Title: Heathers Choice meals review
Post by: hogslayer on July 24, 2016, 04:33:02 PM
I purchased some of the Heathes Choice meals to give them a try before elk season.  I typically eat healthy and have some food allergies so i decided to give them a go.  I have tried Alpine Air and Mountain House before and these are by far leaps and bounds better then either one.  I just gave the Cherry Chilli a go, and then poured it into a bowl.  The serving is a very large and fills a bowl completely up.  Even sitting at home they taste good and would fill you up big time.  Just thought i would throw this out there incase there were a few people on the fence do to the price.  My opinion, with how much i spend on hunting, an extra $4 for awesome food is nothing.

Good to know. Tried Alpine Air meals this weekend and was not impressed. I'll give these a go next time!

I'd try em but not a single one doesn't have an ingredient of some sort I don't like  :bash:

I know they are spendy.  But you get what you pay for.  When i add up all the gear and tags/applications/time off work/gas. It doesn't bother me to pay a little more for things that are good.  I went as light and cheap as possible last year, and it burned me out after a few days.  When i was 10 miles back and hiking my butt off i wanted some good food.  This year i will buy better food and bring more even if it cost me a few ounces.

I need to check back again. Every time I go to order they're out of the two I want. Yes, they are very good and much healthier than the MH's even though they are close to 3 times the price.

Wow, very few choices offered in the entrées.  Chili, spaghetti, and a couple of others that look somewhat scary  :(

Can you guys elaborate on why you think MH, Alpine Air, and Backpackers Pantry are so "unhealthy"?? The macronutrient profile is legit, they don't use preservatives, and emphasize whole foods. I see complaints about the sodium content but when you're pounding out the miles in the backcountry you NEED salt, otherwise you're going to run out of go in your muscles real quick.

dollar or two more I would try them, but $15 is almost 3x what MH/BP go for.  That is dinner at a restaurant price where I do not have to cook, get served a nice cold beer and can flirt with the waitress..

For alot of folks it's the ingredients. I make a conscious effort to eat healthy most of the time. So when I go 5 days in a row on mtn house it's rough. Just my thoughts.

$15 is a little too steep for a backcountry meal IMO. I learned from years of eating MREs in the Marine Corps not to be too picky with food in the field and too me MH is leaps and bounds above MREs.

:yeah: foods food, I'm not picky, I mix it all together and throw tapatio or red peppers on it and eat. It all comes out the same to me. If we're in the field and food hits the ground it's fair game,  :IBCOOL: I know Joe knows what I'm talking about. :chuckle:

been wanting to try the heathers choice foods for awhile now. gonna have to order one or 2 before season to add into the mix. figure having something a bit healthier to offset the constant mtn house meal would be a nice treat.

That Texas quail meal actually looks pretty good except for the whole onion thing! It's one of my big issues with a lot of the Mountain House meals is the onions and peppers are always undercooked and crunchy. Not a fan of those.  Off topic, but what is with all these  freeze-dried meals having mushrooms in them too!? Fungus is not meant to be consumed! :chuckle:

I ordered one of everything that Heather makes and have been working my way through the menu on my summer backpacking trips.  I find the meals filling and good flavors.  The Ethiopian Dorwat is by far my favorite.  The chili was so so.  The buckwheat breakfasts are ok but not worth the expense to me.  I do like how small the packaging is on all the meals.  I don't like that it take 20, really more like 30 minutes to reconstitute the dinners.  I won't completely abandon mountain house but it's nice to have another product choice to break up the menu from time to time.  I'm climbing Mt. Adams this weekend and will see if the packaroons help propel me up the mountain.

Ya I like chowder thick and creamy not watered down. The Ethiopian stuff sounds bomb I like spicy food I might order a couple

have fun on Adams.  Gonna be a hot mother up there!  Not sure if you've done it before, but pack some good sun scream and make sure to coat the inside of your arms. The sun reflects off the snow and will burn you good.  Figured that one out the hard way :chuckle:

Are they still using the winter route?

Yea the heat may add to the suffer fest. Planning to take it slow and take in lots of water. This is my first trip up so not sure about the winter route we are going up the south climb cattle trail.
Oh one thing about that dorowat...I was thinking it would go really well in a tortilla. So I recommend packing some of those and if maybe some packets of salsa. That wouldn't suck.

I've got no problem with MH. I'm one of the lucky ones I guess and they don't mess with my stomach. I eat pretty healthy most of the year so a week or two out of 52 eating MH is alright with me.. Everyday at the hospital I grab a few packs of red peppers and tobasco; Makes any meal much more enjoyable.. Backcountry hunting is already expensive enough. And 20-30 min to wait to eat?! NOPE! I'm in bed 30 min after I'm back to camp at night (sometimes I can't even wait that long). I listened to Heather on the Gritty Bowman podcast and I understand the costs associated with doing this and it's nice to have more options, but I'm gonna stick with the Ol standby for now..

$15 a meal is a hell of a lot more than this cowboy is going to spend on a freeze dried meal. I only eat one MH a day in the field so I don't care if it's got a few preservatives.

People really over estimate the preservatives in MH meals anyway. There isn't any voodoo involved. It's healthier than 90% of prepared foods (round number) and I can get a Mexican Style rice and chicken, throw in a Sriracha packet and some pepper, I'm good for the night and I don't have to cook or wait half an hour

It's going to be strictly simple stuff! When I'm on the mountain, it's macronutrients and flavor.

3 questions before buying a backpacking meal

1) how does it taste?
2) how long does it take?
3) how much protein does it have?

Last year I picked up a bunch of Alpine Aire meals from REI during one of their sales.  I think I ended up paying a little over 5 bucks per meal, so about the same as MH from Costco.  I think they are a little better, and certainly give you some variety outside of the MH options.

Totally disagree. I lose my appetite above 8000 feet and I know many others do too. So if I'm not hungry in the first place, I'd rather not be trying to power down some stale tasting, Backpackers Pantry that took 30 mins to cook. Not when I could have a tasty meal done in 12 min including boil time.

I was able to try Heathers Choice for the first time this past weekend and have to say I was impressed. I'm not picky when it comes to types of foods, however I much prefer more nutrient rich and wholesome foods. And personally, I don't mind paying more for better food. We tried the dark chocolate chili which was really tasty and filling. The macaroons were okay, but I probably wouldn't spend the money on those again. The buckwheat breakfast wasn't bad at all, just a little too much chia seed flavor for my taste. Excited to try more. If anything I would say that I would certainly stick with her main meal options.

Homemade dehydrated meals typically take longer than freeze dried.  I usually plan on 20-25 minutes for dinner to be ready after I add the water.

Harvest Right is what we chose. That's about the way we looked at it, cost was steep but so are all the dehydrated meals we eat. Plus we can freeze dry a lot of our produce instead of canning which gives a better product for many items. I can't wait, I have my first recipe picked out. Freeze dried rice and spicy fajita beef with avocados. Hope it turns out

Interesting thread.  I really wanted to try Heather's Choice but couldn't pull the trigger at $15 a meal.  I recently ordered a supply of meals from outdoor herbivore (I'm thinking they will like the idea of me eating their vegetarian food while trying to kill an animal), Mary Jane's Farm.

We will see how they go.  Outdoor Herbivore had some cold mix meals (Sunny Sunflower Salad, Coconut Chia Peel, Chia Oat Crunch, Waldorf Slaw, Appalachia, Toasted Sunburst Muesli.  I plan to subsidize with some jerky for protein.  The single-serving ones are 400-600 calories at 120-130 calories/oz.  That should be good for lunch for me since I can just mix a little cold water and wait a few minutes.

From Mary Jane's I picked up Curry in a Hurry, Mac N' Cheese, black bean soup, red pesto pasta, and santé fe posta.  They are a little light on the calories at about 500-600 for a double serving so I'll probably subsidize with some tortillas.

I've also tried Packit Gourmet.  Unfortunately, they raised their prices and discontinued some of the ones I liked the most.

I prefer dehydrated meals as freeze dried stuff jacks my stomach up.  I also like Hawk Vittles but his prices went up as well.

Am I missing any other dehydrated meal labels someone would suggest because I like trying new places?

I just picked these up at Walmart yesterday, serves 4. Less than 4 dollars a meal, you will have to mix in a different bag. They are made to pour into the water, 4 cups, I made one in a different bag and worked great.
