Title: Grouse with handguns?
Post by: Dave Workman on July 31, 2016, 05:47:41 AM: Show us your photos of grouse taken with sidearms.
You'll notice this one has its neck cricked. That's where I hit the bugger at about 20-25 yards up on South Cle Elum ridge. (On a past Sept. 1 opener, for everyone's edification. :rolleyes:)

Damage is comparable with either, I highly recommend owning a .22LR handgun to anyone, but if cash is tight and you have a .38/.357 - you don't need a .22 to hunt grouse.

Post by: Bill W on August 03, 2016, 12:29:23 PM: Back when I was a rifle carryer I had a hip pack with 5 7x57 rounds that were loaded with lead bullets at approximately 900 fps. Pencil poked grouse with very, very minimal meat damage. Quiet also. They shot below the crosshairs at 25 yards so I shot some targets to determine where to hold.

Got two that would work well, High Standard HD Military with a 6" heavy barrel and a Smith mod 19 in 32 Long. These are my two favorite handguns. Grouse properly shot should be shot with a 28ga SxS over Setter's! lol

Been several years since I've tried with a pistol, but the last was with the Taurus Tracker .17hmm revolver. No margin for error with the v-max bullets though.

Post by: andersonjk4 on August 10, 2016, 05:20:03 PM: Got this one with a mix of .300 WM and Browning Buckmark pistol. Winged it out of a tree at about 50 yards with my .300. When it started to take off running my BIL handed me his pistol and the chase ensued. Finally got it cornered and was able to finish it off with the .22. Didn't get a pic with the pistol, but got this one on the hike back out after the morning elk hunt.

Ruger is introducing the Mark IV, a full upgrade of the famous .22 pistol and they're sending one for a T&E for a magazine article. As I did with the Ruger American .22 rifle a few years ago, I may get to take the first game with this pistol.

That's the only restriction I know of and I remember it is a pain to find in the regs but I can't remember what page its on without pulling out the regs.

what im getting from that, is that as long as it is deer or elk season, you can shoot a grouse with a .380 pistol. or a .308 rifle as long as you have a deer or elk modern tag..

Did you get full penetration, and a good blood trail for tracking? What was the weight retention? :tung:

I've thought about using my new-ish 460 S&W, think it'll kill em? J/K, actually I worked up some good shot loads for it for grouse, just for something different. This is at 7 yards, I think it'll do.

I farthest shot with my judge I have taken about 35 ft. Worked just fine.

Trying to get a shot at one with my Bond this year.

It was "illegal" to carry a pistol bow hunting a few years ago..... Bad law.
