Can't wait for the story and pics!!!!

I did some scouting this week and was undecided which birds to hunt until the morning before the hunt. Most birds are still in huge flocks and holding tight to cattle feeding operations. The group of birds I plan to hunt has split into 4 smaller groups that are roosting all along the hillside above a cattle ranch. There's an old road that the birds like to walk down off the hill, my plan for opening morning is to sit in a blind where I think most of the birds are going to pass in the morning, hopefully it's a good plan, in a few hours we'll know?
Reagan and Harold arrived while I was out scouting in the evening. We also have another young man in camp for the hunt tomorrow. We all had tacos for dinner, swapped some cell phone photos and told lots of tall stories, then Reagan opened her packages from the Hunting-Washington members who have donated to the youth hunt, (the money is being put toward a new gun for Reagan to hunt with). Everyone headed to bed, we need to be up at 4:15 so I'm heading to bed too.
Thanks again to the members who donate to make this hunt package so awesome! :hello:
Here's a few photos from the day before the hunt, hopefully we'll get more photos tomorrow!
-
Reagan just dropped her first Turkey, we are sitting tight for a while to see if others come by.

Great news! Congrats Reagan!! Can't wait to see the pics.

Just realized Dale was posting some of this at 1 am this morning! The life of a guide....never sleeps. Dale put us in the middle of the birds, more than I've ever heard in one spot. Thankful and blessed!

Heck yeah! Way to go Reagan. Great start!

Four Jake's just walked within 5 feet of us, Reagan opted to pass them, we are sitting tight, we hear gobblers all around us and had several pass just out of range. One Tom has a real good looking rope hanging, fingers crossed that he comes back.
Sorry no photos yet, we don't dare move.

Sounds like you are right in the middle of the action. What an exciting hunt.

Reagan's story so far
I was riding home from school, and my dad told me that He put me and my brother into a drawing. He also explained how it works. "You pick a number between 1-10,000. A machine picks a number and whoever picks the number closest to one the machine picked without going over, gets to go on a guided turkey hunt." When my dad told me I had won, I felt super excited.
The day before our hunter safety test was frightening. I studied extra for it. I tried to get my brother to, but he kept looking over my shoulder to watch TV. If I didn't pass, I would have to do it again next year, couldn't go on the hunt, and couldn't have the 20 gauge shotgun my dad had bought. The next day was Saturday. So we headed up to Moxee for our test.
Before the test our instructor reminded us about what we were there for and to follow the rules. The test was easy. And we both passed!!😃
On March 31, we went to go see Bearpaw. After we got there, we put our stuff in the cabin, and came inside. We talked for a while and had tacos for dinner with cupcakes for dessert. The next morning we got up at 4:00am and got ready for our hunt. When were going to the blind, we had be super quiet not to wake the hundred birds above our heads. In the blind we sat and waited for about an hour before it got light out.
The turkeys were gobbling like crazy and at about 6:00 the turkeys started flying down from the trees. It wasn't long before the turkeys started coming our way. A couple gobblers came down the road with 30 hens in the back. We sat and waited a little while longer and a Tom came down the hill. He was walking down slowly and I pointed the barrel at him and pulled the trigger.
"BANG!!!". The Tom did the flop and scared 4 jakes off. We waited 1 hour after that and the jakes came back and walked 5 feet away from the blind. Kept calling and watching for more birds.

Reagans story, day 2 part 2.
I didn't get a shot at anymore turkeys that day. So we went home and cleaned him. I had to gut him. After we cleaned it, my dad and I went to Omak to watch my step-sister sing in a singing competition. We got back at around midnight and slept till 4:10 when we had to wake up to try to get another turkey.
We woke up, ate breakfast, and went to the blind. I fell asleep a couple times but we called some turkeys in and had a hen walk right past us. Sooner or later three Toms walked into range which took half an hour to walk 50 yards. So we're calling and and a hen walks right past us and we stopped calling. We looked to our right and the toms came in. So since they were in range, I aimed and Mr. Dale whispered " Shoot the one on the right! Shoot the one the right!" So I did. I pulled the trigger and he fell down, got back up, started to run away, and I shot him again.
When we were back at the cabin, we butchered him and talked a bit and then we started our drive home.
I appreciate all the people that helped make this happen and my dad told me about Mr. Iceman and I appreciate and am thankful for having a bunch of people that I haven't met that helped participate with the Turkey hunt that I will never forget.
Thank you all!!!😁

The mod team has decided to name this youth hunt the Annual "Iceman" Memorial Youth Turkey Hunt in memory of Kevin "Iceman" Wolfe. Kevin was one of our moderators, he loved taking his kids hunting and really was an ardent proponent of outdoor family activities, this seems like a great way to remember Kevin. Chris (Nock_Nock) at Willy's Log Furniture made and donated a plaque in memory of Iceman, it arrived just in time for hunt photos, thanks so much Chris.
It was a pleasure meeting you Reagan, you were fun to hunt with and really did a great job! :hello:

I really like the photo with Reagan in her "I shoot like a girl" shirt and the Iceman Memorial plaque.

I'm not sure where to start when it comes to my thoughts on this whole thing. These type of events leave their mark forever. There are so many pieces to it from all the people who are 99% only known by a handle doing things for people they'll probably never meet. It makes you realize the value or specialness of this forum. Yes, there are pain in the backside parts I'm sure.....but this trip was just incredible.
Reagan is fortunate enough to have been exposed to much things related to hunting. She has shot her portion of sage rats, rock chucks and may have finished off a coyote or two. She's sat in coyote stands with me but has only been a patient observer for the most part. I'm a divorced man (who is now remarried) and the time I get with my 3 children is 99.9% of the time with them all together. This is the first trip her and I have spent just one on one. That alone creates "cause for pause". It's easy for me to get that stuck in my thoughts and just ponder.....
So.... for her to pass her hunters safety (like she mentioned) was a big deal. I realize the pass rate is extremely high but I didn't let that on. With the money that had been donated for gear, I opted to use it to buy her a youth model shotgun vs buying clothes that wouldn't fit in no time. So a Rem 870 20 ga synthetic was purchased by me. I told her that if she failed hunters ed, it stayed mine....but if she passed it would be hers. (As I would be reimbursed from the kind folks who donated money for this event) With that purchase, there was a little left over for some clothing that should fit her awhile.
Her story is accurate and there isn't much to add. I love the part about sneaking into the blind to not wake up the turkeys above our heads. Dale is a kind and patient man. While typing I just remembered something she said driving home yesterday so I'll go ahead and share this :chuckle: I'll try to quote the best I can. She said, "That other guy Brian, when I first saw him he looked kinda grouchy, but after I was around him some, he's really nice! Some people just have grouchy faces I guess". That still makes me laugh :chuckle: :chuckle:
I know I'm all over the place with this post but so is my mind. There are so many things/lessons to learn out hunting. It is about who you spend it with vs what you harvest or how big it is/score etc. Memories for a lifetime, pictures to cement those memories. Lessons on patience, the taste of victory/success/ or lessons from being unsuccessful and a desire to improve/master a skill. At one point on day 1 after she killed her tom, 4 jakes walked up the road and passed us within 5 feet. After they passed (maybe an hour later) she said, "I should have shot one of those jakes". Later that night I asked her again if she felt the same way, and now she was glad she didn't as she had the next day in front of her. Again, lessons..... I was able to explain to her last night while tucking her in, part of the heritage/tradition of hunting and that she was now a part of it. That for 1000's of years this has been going on and now she gets to be a genuine part of it vs the observer. That after the hunt, people gather and stories are told over and over. That tomorrow when she see her mom, she'll be able to share those stories and that you'll also want to hear stories from other hunters as well. Often, when I say these things, she doesn't say anything, she'll just reach up and give me a hug. Well, to this dad, that says it all
So.....thank you all who were part of this. You've made your mark. The confidence this can build in these young ones I don't think is possible to quantify, let alone providing a shotgun she'll have the rest of her life and may even pass on to her kids. Not that as parents we think our kids will get into any real trouble, a favorite line I from a judge (not in a court setting) is, "You keep those kids in the woods and out of my court" carries some weight. Kids will find things to do with free time. If we can curb the desire of what they WANT to do by building up experiences like this.......this world will be a better place......and just might be possible, one turkey at a time :chuckle:
Gringo

That's a great statement!

I gotta say Gringo, I genuinely look forward to reading your posts. You bring about a lot of experience to the table in an insightful, humble manner. Thanks for sharing your daughter's experience and congratulations on her TWO victories of 2017. The first of many I'm sure!

One more, this is the second bird after the shot, coming out of the blind.
https://1drv.ms/v/s!AuLxmOu0IrjQg2OR85Xs4R-JSlpT
A couple more things. She's wearing her brothers jacket which is WAY too big for her. On this bird, the Toms were 80-100 yards off to our left all morning but showed no interest of coming our way. Dale got into an argument with the lead hen and apparently talked enough smack to her that she was going to come check it out. She ended up walking right past us which caused another hen to follow.....which brought the toms into range.
He was definitely "speaking the language".
-
Finally got time to look through all of the follow up; stories, pics and videos!!!!! Great job Reagan on two awesome birds. Great write up pics and stories. Congrats again to Reagan and Gringo.
