Finishing up an addition on the house, and need to put decking on the new deck, and replace failed composite on the existing deck. Any experience/ recommendation for brands and/ or lines within a brand. Staring at the decking display at HD or BMC is a bit overwhelming!
Thanks

I used Timbertech at my cabin and loved it. My inlaws used it at their house and feel the same.
@haugenna and @jackelope should both have some input on this stuff as well.
-
I have a somewhat gigantic deck covered in Timbertech and have been very happy with it.
@haugenna is the man regarding this topic. He'll spew info for days if you let him.
One thing I did learn after the fact is that the hardware you use is super important.

That was fast. You are going to win mod of the week with that kind of response time.

I actually posted the same time as you, then I saw the mention. Thanks for the cred's though. It's much appreciated.
Do I get a sweet parking spot with that award?
-
Looks like someone else wants the parking spot and moved this. :chuckle:
-
Before Haugenna chimes in I will say that this stuff was super easy to work with and the guys at Dunn Lumber were super helpful getting me parts and pieces.
-
Did you guys use the hidden fasteners with the grooved edge decking?
-
I did not, I drilled and anchored through the top with the drill/countersink tool. I was concerned with the clips breaking over time. The clips are a much cleaner look and maybe I was just paranoid.
-
I didn't either. Used screws. I used decking boards on my railings for caps and the screws were essentially too stiff and broke rather than flexed a little for expansion/contraction. I need to replace the screws with stainless screws so there's a little give. It's on my to-do list. You can see where the boards popped up with the broken screws.

Did you use that stuff for the floor in the rabbit condo there in the background?
-
No sir. None of that in the compound.

Pm sent Angry Perch
Give me a call and I can answer some questions for you.
Thanks jackelope and rainier10.

PM responded to. Thanks everybody.

Stainless trim heads. They mushroom a little, wack em with a hammer and the heads disappear!
-
Just a little word of caution if you have little ones. That stuff gets HOT! Wife took our little girl to urgent care last week when she ran out on the deck before she could get some shoes on. 2nd degree burns and blisters.
-
I'm on mine barefoot all the time. No issues. So's my kid. Maybe it's the color. Mines a light gray.

Very well could be since it's a dark brown

I'm sorry that happened. That sucks!

You could do that with the old traditional composite. The new capped boards are unforgiving to that method. Predrill and it gives you a nice clean finish.

I have that conversation with customers all the time. The darker colors look nice and rich but they get hotter, show scratches, dirt, and pollen more so than lighter colors. It's the black car effect.
Sorry that happened to her. Sounds crazy but water the dark colors down with a hose to cool it down. Hope she is feelin better.

I too have Timbertech on my decks. I went with the hidden fasteners and it's a much cleaner look in my opinion, but it definitely adds a significant amount of cost to the overall deck. From the other composite decks I have been on, the Timbertech performs as well, if not better than the competition. Nate is a great guy and was very helpful with answering my questions.
-
Nate has been super helpful in this process. I can't thank him enough. Dunn dropped off the Timbertech 20 minutes ago, and I'll pick up fasteners tonight. I'll post some pics of the project.

Update. Small new deck is done. Big existing deck is half way there. The nice thing about using a parting board instead of butt joints is that I could finish half the deck, and move all the crap over to clear the other side. Should be done Friday if my back holds out. Using Timbertech with the CONCEALoc hidden fasteners is awesome! Installing decking on a deck with a curved edge and existing railing? Not so awesome.

Let's see some pics when you are done!
-
Progress. Small deck complete. Big deck 1/2 way.
-
 I am liking the blind fasteners.
-
Looking good!

The deck is finally done! Looks fantastic, and the wife is thrilled. Thanks once again to Nate for all the info and the fasteners. We couldn't be happier. This was the final piece of a six month project. The room directly behind the red chairs is a 400+ sq ft master suite that I added onto the house. I can finally swap a hammer for my bow this weekend!

Looks like the dog enjoys a nice sliver free surface to take a nap on as well.
Thanks Tom!
Construction looks great.
-
Thanks guys. A coupe inside the new construction.
-
Nice job and perfect timing on the completion.
