The hslr is a very good value for what the scope offers at its price point

I have the 4-16x44 HST on a .308. Tracks very well and has great tactile clicks but image isn't the best above 14x. Is the hs lr only have the elevation turret exposed, with the windage capped?

Yes that is correct freezer full. I do not mind spending a little more on something better but there is a sale on them this weekend for 150 off...

299 for the 4-16x44 seem like a great deal.  I was wanting one of these. I like that it goes to 16x but I've never heard about them not being very clear above 14x. I want to replace the cabelas scope that came on my 700adl. Anyone know how the viper hs stack up against the Leopold vx-3i?

I have the 4×16×50 and have been extremely happy with it. Never had a problem with clarity even @ 16 ( it's just as clear as my Leupold Mark 4's ). Tracks great and always returns to zero every time.

I have this scope and haven't had any issues whatsoever. There are plenty of Vortex haters on here that will likely chIme in on this thread. I have three pieces of Vortex glass and all have been flawless so far.

Go with the HS-T.  The HS LR has 1/2 MOA clicks versus the industry standard 1/4 MOA. The HS LR has been my one gripe about Vortex. How they have a scope touted as 'Long Range' when it has less than standard precision adjustments is beyond me.  I don't doubt the quality of the glass, but 1/2 MOA clicks if you're planning on using your turrets is ridiculous.

:yeah:  I didn't even think to look at something like that when I bought mine.  Heck I never noticed till I was trying to sight it in and couldn't get it to adjust right :chuckle:

Honestly it was a very good scope for the money.  Adjustments were accurate, and always returned to zero.  I liked the capped windage turret as well as it eliminated the issue of having to double check it before a shot to see if it had moved from hiking and stuff.

BUT..............in what has become the norm for all my vortex pieces, it fully failed on my in the middle of my MT deer hunt.  Reticle broke loose and would spin with the power ring.  That was extreme conditions, but I don't accept fair weather gear so it got sold.  I think the vx3 line is a better quality product.  Heck my cheap Nikon on my backup rifle withstood the cold  :chuckle:  And thats not me "hating" on vortex, thats just simple facts :twocents:

They did 1/2 to get larger travel range into the scope. I don't necessarily think it's bad for lr shooting to a point. Just have to know what your dealing with. What I thought was weird with them is trying to remember the windage is still 1/4.  :chuckle:

That might be their excuse, and that would make sense in theory, except for the fact that the HSLR doesn't have a larger travel range! Both the HSLR and HS-T have 75 MOA of travel in the elevation turret.

I wouldn't sweat the exposed turrets, I actually prefer both to be exposed. Vortex's turret adjustments are very firm. I don't know about the turrets on Leupold's scopes like their Mark 4's, but their CDS turrets are ones that I would actually be worried about dialing by accident (brushing against your leg or side while packing it). If mistaken dialing is a concern, I'd go play with all the brands' turrets at Cabelas or similar and decide for yourself.

For what it's worth, I've yet to have a Vortex product fail me on it's own. I did over tighten scope rings once, denting the scope tube (embarrassing I know).  I shipped it in to them and had a brand new scope at my doorstep a week and a half later. I do run a number of Vortex products too, so it's not like I have the one scope that rarely see's action and claim they're durable. I run a Razor Gen II 4.5-27, Viper PST 6-24 FFP, and 4-16 HST for scopes, and Razor 10x50 and 12x50 binos.  I'll likely be selling my Leupold Gold Ring 12-40 spotter and getting one of the new Razor spotters as well.  :twocents:

The adjustments on both my Mark 4's are just as firm as the Vortex.

i didn't realize both were same travel. Makes sense now that I think of it.
Really no purpose for the 1/2 moa then.

I thought I read somewhere that Vortex used 1/2 moa clicks was so you could dial faster than 1/4. I personally never had a problem with the 1/2 clicks from mine.

That's my understanding of it. I had one for a short period and it was a solid scope for the money. I'm not a Vortex hater but I've never felt that they were any better or worse than anything else in their price bracket. I still have one 4-16 PST that I don't love but I certainly don't hate it. It does it's job well enough to stay on the gun for now, so I can't complain.

Just saw this thread. What gun are you shooting it with? I have a Howa 308 and am wanting to put the Viper HS-T 4-16x44. How are the turrets working for you? Are you going to get custom turrets made for your load?  Thanks!

I'm shooting a howa 300 win mag, ha my even thought of the custom turrets yet. But holds a zero well! Turrets are awesome but be careful putting the gun on your back always remember where your turrets are or put a piece of tape on them, when I went hunting I noticed when I put my gun on my back to climb a mtn that was straight up when I got to the top my windage was moved.
