Title: Feral Pigs, N. California
Post by: cdriver on August 13, 2016, 07:44:13 PM
There is some beautiful country in Northern California. I have been doing some on-line research about pig hunts down there. Looking at guided or maybe try to do it myself on public land. What are some experiences hunters here have had? Thanks in advance for your help.

I used Lockwood Hunting Services out of Ukiah this January. Had a great time and killed two really big pigs in one day. I'll be going back. All of the research I did, including the CA gane & fish, showed that trying to hunt them on public land is usually a waste of time. You might get lucky and see some, bt they hang out on the private ranches for the most part.

What kind the like there?  Was it hunting over feeder or more of a spot and stalk operation?  A wild pig has also been on my hit list for a while.  The fact that they are huntable year round and therefore wouldn't have to interfere with deer and elk season up here is a major benefit.  Also a pretty affordable out of state trip when you consider the cheap tag, lack of a flight, etc.

James, it was spot & stalk hunting. We used an atv to get around the ranch and then hike a little to a glassing spot and go from there. It was a good hunt. I drove my pickup down thee with the camper on it. They let me park/camp on the ranch, so it saved a little cash and was nice in the morning to not have to get up early & drive. They also have a full camp set up for extra money.

Awesome, thanks for sharing the info on that. May have to work that into my offseason plans.

Idk if it's legal but when I was stationed at FT. ORD we would go up to FT. HUNTER-LIGGET and hump all over them damn yamas and we would see pigs a lot , I can't believe some of the terrain they would hangout in, I seen a whole bunch up side bravo and alpha and then another big group halfway up the wizard.. Might be worth looking into, lots of deer as well

I've been wanting to do an off season trip down there for DIY boars.  Tagging for info.
