No its not a personal problem :D I have now cracked two no. 11 nipples with my bighorn. What could be causing this. The last nipple lasted 2 shots? Should I switch to musket caps?

What load are you shooting or how much powder?
I've been shooting / hunting BP since 86 and have never had a nipple crack, but I use TC. I'd be calling Knight to find out what is going on and see if this is a problem they have had with them. Good luck and stay safe.

I had that problem several years ago. Since I've switched to a musket nipple it hasn't been an issue. Not saying that's cause and effect, but maybe it's just me, the wall of the musket nipple seems thicker (?). I also have an extra nipple included in my cleaning kit.

You are probably using a new Bighorn that has the Universal Hammer in it... it will shoot 209 also. The cone on the end of the nose of the hammer is the likely candidate for the nipple problem. Take the hammer to a Machinist and have remove 90% of the cone leaving you with a flat surface - your problem will probably disappear.

I'm still using the original musket nipple that my bighorn came with when I bought it in 2010 :yike:. Original breech plug too and I've hunted deer and elk with it every year. I have put tons of rounds through it too. And, not one misfire ever!

I talked to knight. They said it could be from dry firing with the secondary safety off. Makes sense. Shot 8 shots yesterday and no issues.
