I picked up a basic M&P 15 for a decent price. I am looking for opinions for a low light sight for home defense use? What would you use that does not break the bank, LOL.
What ammo goes well with a 1/9 twist, .556?
This will be used for a quick accessible defense bedroom rifle, not for hunting or target, for now anyways.
-
Aimpoint Pro. Don't go too cheap.
-
55gr FMJBT is fine for 1:9 twist. May not the best for long term grouping, but per ballistics gelatin will snap the cannelure in both flesh and the walls of your home for a beautiful yaw through the bad guys flesh without causing you too many legal bills on the other side. :)
-
Bushnell hollow sight, good but cheap and quick acquisition!! Or just go with open sights, that is the quickest most effective anyways!!
-
Great input everyone!
Thank you
I was looking at a SigSaur Romeo 4, red dot that was pretty sweet.
Then I stated second guessing a red dot for low light or night?
Anyone have any experience with these?
Hollow sights also seem to fit the function as well though, two many friggin options, lol.
Bean, have you shot the 55gr Hornady Taps?
-
Nothing wrong with irons and a trijicon front.
Oh, and if you do have to use it in house I'd use an A2 or BE Meyers Flashhider.

Fixed it. :chuckle:

A suppressor is ideal, but....
I would be concerned about it coming up in court later. I think a prosecuting at tourney would have a field day with a suppressed "assault" rifle sitting on the evidence table
-
Personally, for home defense, I'd put a flashlight on it.
That's what I did.
At home defense ranges, a flashlight in the dark is nice.....

I don't think so.
Right now I've got my first several mags loaded with 64gr Gold Dots by Speer. For an extra large contingent of domestic terrorists from Black Lives Matter I'll have to switch to my cheaper 55grain FMJs. :rockin: :mgun2:

You seriously have a thread about an M&P15 with no pictures? :nono: :ban:
-
:sry:
As I said currently it is a plain jane M&P 15, no frills all business, LOL.
Soon to change
-
Comes with free sunglasses?? 8) Sign me up! :chuckle:
-
Doesn't matter, plain Jane or not. Gun porn is protected by the 1st and 2nd Amendment! Nice.

This is a great idea even if I decide to put a holo sight on! Are Trijicon rears(that flip back to wide aperture any good? They seem to be substantially cheaper bought as a set?
Call me old school, I like to give myself every advantage possible if and when the time comes. Flashlights and lasers (with the exception of IR) "can" give the bad guy knowledge of my position.

I don't own any sports utility rifles :chuckle: , but if I did, a Crimson Trace MVF-515G would be attached. It has both a 200 lumen light and a green laser, both of which are activated by pressure pad. It does NOT fit your bill for inexpensive. A couple of notes:
- The green laser is enough to light up an entire room, often making the flashlight superfluous
- Unlike a red laser, a green laser can illuminate a fine point on my neighbors garage even in bright daylight*
- Weapon mounted lights encourage breaking of Rule 3: Never point your firearm at something you're not willing to destroy. What if that sound downstairs is my kid going for a glass of milk? :o
- I have a couple of glow sticks in the night stand that could be tossed into the corners of rooms/downstairs as needed. While illuminating a target straight on will likely blind them in night time conditions it is indeed wise to be weary of giving away your position if in search mode if the bad guy happens to be at your side when the light is first illuminated.
*=Special note from my attorney: test this before attaching to your rifle ;)

This thing lights up the whole neighborhood. I have one on my Joe Biden approved shotgun:

The rears are fine. I just don't see needing one for inside/ around the house. I'm not much for flashlights either and honestly I'd take the money that you would spend on a optic and light and buy ammunition and shoot more.
I'm sure you have reasons for using the AR for home defense and I hope I don't kick off the same old what's better debate, but I think a quality handgun/ shotgun combo is the best for defending ones family in a residential setting.

I am building a "layered" defense,
XD .40 in a holster attached to the back of the headboard.
Remi-semi 16 ga, short barrel, loaded with slug/00 buck alternated, hidden mount.
M&P 15, within easy access.
LOL

Nice!
You might consider a 249 or maybe go retro with a 1919? :chuckle:

And be able to see my target in the dark, LOL

What's funny is when we did room entry's or any low or high clad entry's , we had all the fancy new bad boy tech gear and 99% of us barrel shot, unless your highly trained, the normal person won't aim or aquire anyways, you just end up pointing and pulling, that's why for home defense your better off with a short shotgun with 00 buck, or if you have a lot of rooms with family then load up with 6 shot, when you get the intruder down walk up and cap them, make sure they are not breathing when you call 911

I put a Meprolight front sight on tonight. Made a big difference for these old eyes, even in light.
LOL
-
So far I have put on a Magpul forward vertical grip.
I settled on the Bushnell Elite Tactical CQTS 1X32mm Red Dot sight.

I shot a an AR with this sight mounted well forward. It gave a great sight picture and maintained very good peripheral vision with both eyes open.
Should meet my needs.

Added Strike Industries Viper handgaurd
Finished configuration
For now,
LOL
-
where do you mount the 12 gauge?
LOLCarl

I am thinking about a in wall location behind a full length mirror on hidden hinges between the studs.
Inspired by these guys
